4 Grand Forks Police Department 2014 Annual Crime Statistics February 9, 2015 Mark Nelson, Chief of Police In 2014, officers of the Grand Forks Police Department responded to 42,069 calls for service which is a 2.7% decrease from 43,247 calls for service in Despite this decrease in calls for service; Grand Forks Police Department officers continue to spend more time completing each call for service as we strive to give better service to our citizens. Grand Forks Police Department saw its first increase in two years for criminal offenses reported to the Federal Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) system. In the eight main criminal offenses listed on page 5 of this report you will find an increase in these main criminal offenses from 1,568 such crimes reported in 2013 to 1,734 in 2014; this is a 11% increase. While this increase is somewhat concerning and will need to be tracked; upon further review we found: The number of reported crimes in this category for 2014 were still 4% less than the 10 year average. Violent crime; which includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault; saw an overall decrease of 13% in 2014 compared to Property crime, which account for a larger number of these criminal offenses, saw a 13% increase during this same time period. In light of these statistics trends, the Grand Forks Police Department recognizes the importance of remaining vigilant in the enhancement of the quality and effectiveness of our service to the Grand Forks community and its visitors. In 2014, the Grand Forks Police Department attained national accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. Also, our Uniform Patrol, Criminal Investigations and Community Resource Bureaus continues to collaborate and develop enforcement, investigative and community based strategies designed to address continually changing crime patterns. As the City of Grand Forks continues to expand both in population and physical area; the Grand Forks Police Department will continue to be proactive in our focus on efficiency and educational programs that focus on preventing crime before it happens. Our relationships with our Public Schools, Non-Profits, Businesses and Citizens remain the corner stone of our prevention strategy. STATISTIC COMPARISONS The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) system is a nationwide statistical program which is administered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to monitor and track eight main criminal offenses designed to gauge the state of crime in our Nation. This Crime Index compiles information on violent crimes to include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson. 9 PARKING TICKET SUMMARY The City of Grand Forks showed a combined total of 9,222 parking tickets issued in 2014 which is a 7% increase from the previous year. The Police Department issued approximately 71% of the total citations in addition to the five other entities who have the authority to issue parking tickets on behalf of the City. The following list shows the number of tickets issued by each agency over the past year along with a pie chart which shows the top 5 parking violations in Grand Forks.
