4 President s Message by Tracy Wyhlidko We have two training days left for 2012: Redding on September 19 th, and Red Bluff on November 14 th. Please put one or both on your calendar. Award nominations have been something I have been trying to encourage all year. The forms are finally here. Please nominate at least one person or agency for at least one award. If every member turned in even one nomination, we would blow away the nomination numbers from previous years! We are also changing the location of the Annual Awards and Dinner Banquet to Feather Falls Casino in Oroville. We received first-hand reports from several members that this is a great venue and that the food and drinks (especially the beer) are first rate. We have enjoyed Rolling Hills Casino for the last several years and it felt like time to try something new and different. Please mark your calendars, arrange for babysitters, and do whatever you need to do to make sure you can attend our Annual Banquet on Saturday night, January 12, 2013! July Training Meeting in Olivehurst by Tracy Wyhlidko Our training in Olivehurst had my favorite demonstration of the year. We got to watch a sewer manhole overflow. Ok, Ok, it was staged and it was a little test manhole being pumped full of clean water, but seeing that water bubble out of the manhole lid edges always gets my heart rate up. Thank you Olivehurst for sharing your facilities with us for the day! The morning began with time to sign in and network while enjoying donuts and coffee. Ms. Denise Lee from PG&E spoke about how commercial accounts could save money by adjusting their time of use. It turns out that the highest price for power is between 2-6 pm. If a commercial customer is able to use most of the electricity at other times of the day, a significant amount of money can be saved. PG&E is always ready to discuss accounts with their large utility users. Mr. Tom Churchill of Process Solutions Inc spoke about the next generation of improvements in the onsite generation of chlorine. He reminded us that all chlorine originally comes from salt. The combination of equipment plus salt, softened water, and electricity generates a liquid chlorine solution. Rock salt is much easier to handle than compressed chlorine gas, and has none of the safety concerns. The Micr-O-clor system coverts rock salt to a 0.8% chlorine solution. Chlorine solutions below 1% do not require reporting, secondary containment, and are not considered hazardous materials. A cost/benefit analysis is available for any interested utilities. The Olivehurst WWTP and Collection Crew designed mock man hole for a good visual measure of just what a sewer overflow looks like. By feeding a measured flow of water into the man hole from their jet rodder, you can easily see what a 5gpm or 50gpm spill would look like.

5 Continued from page 4 Ms. Sarah Modgling of Pacific Power Renewables spoke about Solar Power for Public Utilities. Pacific Power has built solar projects where they own and build the project and sell the power back to the customer over a set time frame. Often, the return on investment can be as fast as 5 years. The benefit to the utility customer is that their power bills are fixed for years and the utility did not have to do a capital improvement project to fund the construction. The utility would need to provide the real estate (land) to house the solar panels. Many water and wastewater utilities are going solar because they have the land available and this will save money in the long-term. Olivehurst photos by April Overfield The July 14th Rivercats Game The NSVS CWEA had a total of 4 members and 18 additional family and friends attend the Sacramento Rivercats Baseball Game on Saturday July 14 th. It was a great night for a baseball game. The weather was good, even a little chilly by the river once the sun went down. The Rivercats handily won the game and the fireworks show after the game is always awesome. I wish we had more of our members attend this event. The few of us who participated had a great time! live.com

9 2012 AWARDS Well it is that time of year again. It is time to recognize the hard work and dedication of wastewater professionals here in Northern California. The Northern Sacramento Valley Section CWEA annual award ceremony honors the excellence in 20 different wastewater categories. By nominating your employees or co-workers you can show them that their hard work is appreciated. Not only can you nominate individuals for the awards, but you can show that as a team they are making a difference by nominating your facility for a plant of the year award. We here at Olivehurst Public Utility District have attended the ceremony, and it was a great time to meet and reconnect with other wastewater professionals from all over the area. So remember, if you want to show your gratitude for all of the hard work your employees do for you and your plant, they cannot win if you do not nominate them. Rob Price, Chief Plant Operator, Olivehurst Public Utilities District
