3 Ultrasound a game changer for rural and remote medicine From blunt abdominal trauma to obstetrics, foreign bodies to vascular access, ultrasound encompasses a wide range of applications and clinical environments. And as ultrasound systems reduce in size and cost, the potential for ultrasound to significantly impact on the health and well-being of Australian rural and remote communities is huge. Yet barriers to realising the potential of ultrasound in our outback remain; as an operator dependent diagnostic modality, rural and remote practitioners regularly identify core factors that impact their ability to use ultrasound, including: A lack of reliable and regular access to mentoring Access to ultrasound Insufficient training The time required to become confident and competent with the technology The tyranny of distance The UTS GEHealthcare Rural and Remote Ultrasound Scholarship seeks to break down these barriers. The UTS GEHealthcare Rural and Remote Ultrasound Scholarship 2018 In response to the challenges facing rural and remote practitioners, and the high number of requests for assistance, UTS approached GE Healthcare with one proposal let s do something about this. And we have We re proud to announce the second annual UTS GEHealthcare Rural and Remote Ultrasound Scholarship Page 1
