3 The Beginning Capital Bikeshare was on Fairfax County s radar since it proved successful in Arlington and Washington DC Question of when and where Study to get into details of launching a system Reston was Bicycle Friendly Community, W&OD, network of own paths, two successful road diets, future metro stations, etc Most bikeshare ready area of Fairfax County 3

4 Making it Happen Applied for a MWCOG TLC Grant for 2014 Also applied for Federal TAP Grant for bikeshare funding at the same time ($500k) TLC Grant provided $60,000 for a 6 month feasibility study Funding was used to hire Alta Planning + Design 4

Steps to Launch Capital Bikeshare supplier financial uncertainty Internal workgroup to review: Other bikeshare suppliers/operators County regulations Detailed funding plan Ongoing process to finalize station locations Fairfax County doesn t have many wide sidewalks/public space Need for private property owners to allow stations on-site 6

8 Capital Bikeshare Launch System launched on October 21, 2016 Reston System Launched with 9 stations and 84 bikes (Reston) In process of continuing to add more stations Also launched CaBi in Tysons at the same time 8 Stations and 50 bikes In process of continuing to add more stations 8

11 The Good TLC Grant allowed County to hire consultants to do work that staff didn t have time or resources for Complete work in a short time frame (6 months) Provided foundation for future system planning and identified what steps needed to add stations Opened lines of communication with private sector 11

12 If I knew then what I know now Bigger push for smaller stations, relatively close together, for more coverage area Smaller stations cost less, stretch funding further, add more stations Be more involved with study and interactions with stakeholders Ensure recommendations are implementable Lots of time spent reviewing station locations and finding new ones after study 12
