Enrollment Support Services Externships, etc. Funding TA, GI Bill WIA/WIOA Other scholarship funding sources Grants Salaries & Benefits Free staffing options Staffing Capacity How much can they do How much are they willing to do Are the partnerships worthwhile (Example: not a strain on our staff)
5 Example of Negative Growth: Too Many Grants! Grant Funded Programs get more attention than non-grant programs. Tracking purchases and requisitions becomes more complicated Reporting and data management can overwhelm staff Challenges hiring enough staff or hiring them quickly enough. All the new programs need space and equipment that doesn t exist. Result: things can fall through the cracks, stressed staff, and potentially unhappy customers.
6 Example of Positive Growth: Welding Result: Three 8-student classes, two 15- student classes this spring. At capacity with waiting lists! Started one program in Oceanside. Existing San Dieguito program was added later. Additional grants allowed for classes with just admin/ certificate fees. Multiple funding sources provided money for equipment, supplies, and facility Industry pushed the need to develop a program
7 Lessons Learned Have the right staff & Support them! Communicate Often. Be Open & Check In. Develop relationships you never know what the return will be Create a strong portfolio with different options when the economy shifts Do your research! Evaluate Regularly! Drop a partnership and/or program if it is not working Is the funding reliable? Example: WIA/WIOA Ask lots of questions. Get lots of support.
