1 International MIKUMI SOLAR PROJECT IN TANZANIA 2015 Deadline: November 7, 2014 Program Dates: May 2-16, 2015 STUDENT APPLICATION PACKAGE NSCC International creates international learning opportunities for NSCC Students and Employees as part of NSCC s UNIQUE LEARNING EXPERIENCE. ENTREPRENEURSHIP and INNOVATION are a special focus for programs this academic year. Program Summary The 2015 Mikumi Solar project is a faculty and student international learning program with the purpose of creating a solar water pumping system on the Mikumi Vocational Training Centre (VTC) campus in Tanzania. The program will provide an opportunity for students from the Schools of Trades and Technology to analyze, design, document and implement the solar pumping system in order to maintain a more consistent water supply and pressure to various buildings on campus. The travel to Tanzania will take place over a two and a half week period in May The project will provide a cross disciplinary senior project learning opportunity for a team of up to five second year students. The NSCC students and faculty will collaborate with their electrical and related program counterparts at Mikumi VTC to set up the pumping system. In May 2014 a group of students and faculty from NSCC travelled to Mikumi and with the help of students and faculty at Mikumi they installed three 250W photovoltaic (PV) panels, two batteries with a total capacity of 1600W, an inverter and a signal conditioner. It was installed as a pilot project and it keeps the lights on and outlets powered for 5 of the guest houses. It is also installed so that it can be used as a living lab for the electrical training program. Program Qualifications This program is open to second-year NSCC students from the following programs: Construction Management Electrical Engineering Technology Electronic Engineering Technician Electronic Engineering Technologist Energy Sustainability Engineering Technology Mechanical Engineering Technology Architectural Engineering Technology Civil Engineering Technology Environmental Engineering Technology Electrical Engineering Technician Successful completion of this program will provide the students with a Senior Project or Work Term equivalency.

2 Faculty Involvement Selected faculty will provide support to the students during all phases of the program. About Mikumi, Tanzani and Mikumi VTC Since 2009 NSCC has been working with Mikumi Vocational Training Centre (part of the Tanzania Vocational Education Training Authority VETA) on a Canadian Government funded project managed by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) called Education for Employment (EFE). The purpose of the project is to build capacity of tourism training offered at the VTC, which is adjacent to a national park, and experience a growth in wildlife and adventure tourism. Initiatives have included faculty and staff exchange, teacher training, leadership and management training, curriculum review, library services and IT enhancements, marketing, social media and entrepreneurship training, outreach to industry, tourism industry study tours in Nova Scotia, and NSCC student and faculty study tours at Mikumi. To date over 30 NSCC students and 14 employees have completed teaching and learning assignments and exchanges at Mikumi VTC, along with two representatives from the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia and the South Shore Public Library of Nova Scotia. In addition, NSCC is a partner with the VETA ( on a leadership training initiative for managers. The Mikumi VTC is 400 kilometres outside of Dar es Salaam, just outside the Mikumi National Park boundary in Mikumi Town, and is fully equipped with a restaurant, overnight accommodations, a tourist information centre and a conference centre. The Tanesco Electrical Power Supply Company is the government run utility that provides power in Tanzania. Most of the power is hydro and Tanzania is growing rapidly. Frequently there are power shortages especially during the dry season. The power is switched off at the Mikumi VETA frequently and without notice. NOTE: Tanzania is located in East Africa, not in West Africa which is the area of the continent affected by the Ebola Virus. All of NSCC s project locations are constantly monitored for health and safety risks. For more information on Ebola and student mobility click here: Program Components Pre-departure phase will focus on research to be conducted from the beginning of the second term (January 2015) up until departure to Tanzania. NSCC students and faculty will conduct research activities in collaboration with counterparts from Mikumi VTC. The purpose will be to identify relevant and cost-efficient materials for the solar pumping system and to design and plan the implementation phase. On-site project phase in Tanzania will enable the joint NSCC and Mikumi VTC team to finalize the implementation plan and move forward with creating the solar pumping system. Post-project phase with allow the team to finalize their findings, debrief about their experience and initiate plans for future programming. Learning Outcomes To learn about and share best practices to implement additional solar power and renewables for the future. To develop and refine the skills needed to prepare for and participate in an international learning experience including research, organization, risk management, teamwork, interpersonal communication and cultural competence and sensitivity. To strengthen academic and portfolio profiles through enhanced research, analytical thinking, planning, communication, innovation, entrepreneurship, applied learning and marketing. To identify and reflect on the differences and similarities between Canada and Tanzania

3 Selection Criteria Must be a NSCC student with a valid passport (or able to get one). Must be a student enrolled in the second year of one of the programs in the School of Trades and Technology as listed previously. Applicants must be in good academic standing. Within two weeks of receiving approval, students are expected to submit a $500 deposit toward the program fees. The dates for the remaining payments will be identified after being selected for the program. Complete applications should be sent via to international@nscc.ca. Paper applications will not be accepted. Applications can be scanned into a single document or sent as attachments. 4 Program Cost The approximate costs associated with this program are outlined below. The exact costs will be confirmed and will depend on the Tanzanian Shilling and US Dollar exchange rate. The following costs will be included in your, Program Fee payable to Nova Scotia Community College. Student Bursary Students will have the opportunity to apply for a $500 bursary from NSCC International (made possible through external funding) to participate in the program.
