Membership Luncheon The next Membership Luncheon will be held on May 19th at noon at the Packhouse Pavilion Restaurant at Rika s Roadhouse. Meal will be soup, sandwich, salad, dessert and drink for $ Please RSVP by 4pm on the 17th to be eligible for the drawing for a free lunch. Guest Presentation will be the Deltana Fair Association. During the May Chamber of Commerce Luncheon, the Deltana Fair Association would like to hold an open discussion with our local businesses. The topics will include: Understanding how the annual fair event impacts local businesses. Identify products and/ or services that can be obtained locally. Improvements being made to the fair grounds and the need for com munity involvement. This year the fair is looking to make improvements to the horse arena requiring materials such as sand / sawdust and topsoil. Recognize businesses that are presently active members of the fair. Recognize 2010 sponsors. Identify opportunities for business financial sponsorship, sponsored activities and volunteering, in Give Aways - 3 day passes and merchandise Open discussion The annual Deltana Fair is a community event that relies on the donations and contributions of the community. Feedback and insight from our local businesses is essential to our future success and will lend a hand in understanding how we can collectively work better together. They will be hosting the first of two Lumberjack Challenges for the season (the second one is held at the Deltana Fair). Come ready to participate, and have the experience of a lifetime! They will be holding practice from 11 A.M. to Noon. The Challenge will take place from 1 PM - 4 PM. Contestants wearing open toed shoes WILL NOT be allowed to participate due to safety reasons! 7 Chamber News Flower Sponsors Help us spiffy up the visitor Center for the visitors to our community this season with flowers. There are several ways to do this. To sponsor a flower barrel (or two) or the Milepost flowers, the cost is $ each. You may also come to the visitor center and plant a barrel (or more) with your own flowers. You can also donate plants for the flower beds or plant them yourself. In any case, your name will be prominently placed inside the flower arrangement and will be on a poster displayed on the front window of the Visitor Center. If you just want to make a donation toward any of the flower gardens, any amount is appreciated and acknowledged on the poster. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SPRING CLEANING AT SULLIVAN ROADHOUSE Volunteers are requested to assist in the final stages of Spring Cleaning the Sullivan Roadhouse Museum. All that s required is a desire to spruce up the old gal and make her ready for the summer season. There will be dusting, vacuuming, and some sweeping. If you are interested contact Christy at cmroden@alaska.edu for dates and times. Wednesday, May 4 1 to 3pm Friday, May 6 1 to 3pm We don t have much left to do, but to get things ready in time for the opening day we could truly use some reinforcements. Plus on the heels of that is preparing the gardens and grounds.we know it s a busy time for everyone but a couple hours from extra hands and the task will be accomplished. 8 Chamber News MAY CHAMBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT The partners of Logging and Milling, Tom Nerbonne, Jon Squires, and Brad Cox could be considered the founders of the present day Logging and Milling Associates. They have had a lot of good help along the way from guys with the names of Steve, Jason, Richard, Tommy, Sam, and a whole lot more. The business has its roots in the Dry Creek Community, which was founded in The logging and milling operation was started to provide the community with a source of firewood and lumber, and it began to sell outside the community in They grew up in the community and took the business over as partners in Their first business venture was in the raw log export to the Japanese between the years 1989 to They began to wonder why the Japanese were willing to come so far into the interior of Alaska and pay high prices for their softwoods. They then realized that their local White Spruce was of high quality and deserved to be value added by Alaskans, and that the local customers could have a quality local product. In 1992, they began to sell rough, green lumber and to shape precision milled houselogs in They added a construction crew in 1998 to construct with the houselogs they were producing. They have since constructed approximately 60 log shells. In 2000, they installed the first of the kilns and a planer to increase the value of their products to their customers. At first, the kiln was used to dry 1 and 2 tongue and groove products, but they have now found that the kiln was good for the houselogs. Presently, they are focusing on making precut packages with the option of saddle notches. These would show up at your building site packaged and labeled for easier construction. No cutting tools would be required. So whatever your log home needs or desires, they believe they can help, because they have some good wood, some experience, and some good guys to get it done.
