1 Innovative Technology Grant Form B : Entry # 4 Your Name Betsy Rouse Your brouse@epsne.org Project Title 3D Design and Smart Art Date of Request 02/01/2017 Curriculum Areas Involved Fine Arts Mathematics Science Technology/Media Project Description (What) The primary goal of this project is to provide 4th and 5th grade students with hands on, computer based STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) activities for Computer Club at Skyline Elementary. The primary focus for this project will be to provide students an opportunity to create an object using different design programs (ie. Sketchup, 3dtin, and Tinkercad) while then turning the idea into a real world object using a 3D printer. Students will be able to create, design, and implement engineering projects that allow for the manipulation of their ideas. Students can put into practice math and geometry concepts in a real world application. Students can create simple robotics parts for robots. This project will provide students with an exciting and fun way to begin exploring STEM concepts by asking open ended What if questions. This project will provide hardware and media to allow students to work collaboratively to become young inventors, creators, and engineers. Currently students have the ability to design and create projects, but it is not feasible to turn the ideas into a real item that the students can use to expand their learning. Project Purpose/Benefit/Rationale to Student Learning (Why) This year Skyline could have up to 40 students registered for Tech Club. We would like to use our funds from the program to purchase a 3D printer to print out projects. The 3Doodler pens are pens that allow students to create 3D projects by drawing. The pens focus on prototyping, invention, STEM/STEAM concepts, tactile learning, design concepts, and computational thinking. The website ( has lesson plans and a shared community for ideas on how to implement these tools into any program. The 3Doodler pens will help introduce students to different strategies for 3D design. They will make a great addition to our Tech Club and Makerspace environment. Methods for Assessing Effectiveness

2 Innovative Technology Grant Form B : Entry # 4 This project will provide students with practical experiences such as designing and producing small objects to be used in other projects. It will also give students practical experience using simple tools to create projects. Providing exposure to activities such as this project should encourage student participation in future STEM areas. Along with motivation and practical, mechanical experience, this project will give students concrete knowledge of methods for creating real world objects, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Students will be using mathematical reasoning skills to make projects work. Estimated number of students to benefit from project for current and subsequent years This project is intended for 4th and 5th graders participating in tech club. This year Skyline could have up to 40 students participate in Tech Club. In the past we have not had the opportunity to offer a similar program because we did not have the resources available. However, interest has been high in the other computer clubs such as the robotics and video editing program. In the future there would hopefully be situations that more students in grades 2nd 5th would be able to actively use the software, printer, and pens for additional curriculum projects. The education pack will allow enough materials for teams of students to engage in the activities at the same time. The Spheros come with instructional materials and lesson plans to diversify learning. This set, along with the STEM accessory pack will allow students to experiment with different STEM concepts. We currently have nearly 90 students in 4th & 5th grades, with anticipation that these numbers will grow due to new construction in the area. Last year, around 40 students expressed interest in learning about programming, coding, and interacting with the Spheros. Our goal is to purchase a set of these Spheros to provide opportunities in these technology/programming areas. Project Purpose/Benefit/Rationale to Student Learning (Why) STEM or STEAM skills are essential for student readiness for the 21st century. Students need opportunities to engage in handson, project based learning. Through technology club, we can reach students who don t have an opportunity to explore their interest in STEM education. In addition, we can continue to challenge more advanced students. Students will work in small groups focusing on teamwork to control how the Sphero balls roll and appear. The lessons will focus on principals of math, science, technology, and engineering through programming. The lessons are progressively challenging for students. Finally, the Sphero SPRK curriculum is highly motivating and engaging for students. As stated in the project description, we have a strong interest in learning with the Spheros. I would like to provide an opportunity for all 4th & 5th grade students to have a chance to work with the Spheros and explore the STEM curriculum. Methods for Assessing Effectiveness To measure the success of the SPRK program, students will be given a post test questionnaire to evaluate what they have learned. The technology club teachers will be able to determine the level of learning based on the successes and failures of the student projects. The lessons are progressively challenging and teachers will be able to identify how many lessons the students completed throughout the program.

16 Innovative Technology Grant Form B : Entry # 30 Your Name Kyle Dreessen Your kdreessen@epsne.org Project Title Individual Instrument Tuners Date of Request 03/08/2017 Curriculum Areas Involved Fine Arts Project Description (What) We are looking to purchase an ensemble set (60) of Snark ST 2 Clip On Multi Instrument Chromatic Tuners. These tuners have a Piezo Microphone option which detects an individual instrument's vibrations allowing for pitch detection of a single instrument while multiple instruments are playing at once. We would also like to purchase 120 replacement batteries to avoid needing to purchase them during the school year. Project Purpose/Benefit/Rationale to Student Learning (Why) Having a clip on instrument tuner for every person in band will quickly change the method of tuning our ensemble. A process that takes anywhere from 5 15 minutes currently would easily take less than 2 minutes. This would save a large amount of rehearsal time to be spent on instrument technique and concert repertoire. The benefit to student learning would be that each student could quickly assess whether they were in tune with the ensemble and make any necessary adjustments all at the same time as one another. A process that currently we do individually with one tuner. We would also be able to quickly assess the intonation of single notes on each instrument, and then teaching the students techniques to make sure every note is in tune with the ensemble. Methods for Assessing Effectiveness Assessing the effectiveness would be noticeable in every day rehearsals by saving time for other elements of music performance. The ensemble would perform with better intonation which would help all aspects of our performances in each grade level. Estimated number of students to benefit from project for current and subsequent years In we estimate that these tuners will benefit at least 215 students, 250 students in , and 275 students in Itemized Budget/Copy of Requisition Forms

Osmo is a piece of hardware that turns the ipad into an interactive learning experience. It comes with manipulative that enhance the learning in math through the use of tangrams and in reading with the use of letter tiles. The Osmo website does a fantastic job of creating lesson plan ideas to use with students K 6. These plans includes ideas such as STEM, reading, cursive, geography, vocabulary, music, art, etc. Plus, can create your own lessons/activities to individualize the learning! Project Purpose/Benefit/Rationale to Student Learning (Why) As a school, we are always seeking out ways to support learning in all areas and we want to encourage students who come from a variety of different backgrounds and bring different exceptionalities to the classroom. Methods for Assessing Effectiveness Observation at first will be the best way to assess the effectiveness of this tool. How are the students interacting with the lessons and activities? Do the students have increased motivation to learn specific skills and ideas? This is truly a great device to increase creative thinking. Estimated number of students to benefit from project for current and subsequent years Four hundred plus students will have access to the Osmos. I would also like to specifically use this technology specifically with my 4th and 5th grade curriculum during our STEAM units. Itemized Budget/Copy of Requisition Forms

Students can work with these new technology formats through our technology units, curriculum extension activities, and during Technology Clubs. This grant includes the purchase of 4 different items to teach the basic to more advanced levels of coding and design. Littlebits Coding Kits: Block circuits that are used for hands on coding and programming. Kits come with 100+ lesson plans and are compatible with Mac, Windows, and Chromebooks. Geared for students beginning in 3rd grade+. Bloxels: Hands on platform for planning, building, and designing interactive games. This activity demonstrates strategic thinking, design logic, calculation, and computer science skills. Kits come with educator s guides, activity guides, and free app for ios and Android devices. Geared for students in Kindergarten 5th grade. Blue Bots: Robots for learning programming skills. These robots can be programmed without an external device. Students can code using the buttons on the top of the robot or connect and program via Bluetooth with ios, Android, Mac or PC devices. These teach sequencing, directionality, problem solving, counting, and estimation. Geared for students in Kindergarten 3rd Grade. Robot Turtles: Programming board game for students that teaches basic coding skills. This board game is wonderful for teaching off line basics of coding. Geared for students in preschool 3rd grade. Project Purpose/Benefit/Rationale to Student Learning (Why)

40 Innovative Technology Grant Form B : Entry # 66 Students need opportunities to engage in hands on, 21st Century learning skills. The students at Fire Ridge have a strong interest in technology and exploring STEAM concepts, especially coding. Our students and parents continue to express interest in learning different forms of technology. We have several opportunities for our 4th and 5th grades to engage in coding and creating, but we d like to expand those opportunities for students in primary grades. Through this grant, we help prepare students for future careers involving computer science skills. The variety of technologies helps to reach different types of learners. Exposure to these technology tools helps to teach kids about grit, perseverance, collaboration, revision, reflection, and satisfaction as they work through different problems and possibilities. In addition, we can continue to challenge more advanced students.< br /> Skills reinforced through STEAM curriculum: Synthesizing and analyzing Engineering, computer science, design, and math Problem solving and spatial awareness Brainstorming multiple ways to solve the same problem Restructuring learning and thinking Student intrinsic motivation and self directed learning Provide opportunities that allow students to fail in order to succeed Amplify or introduce students the components of STEAM disciplines Strategic thinking, design logic, and computer science skills Introduce students to the iterative process for problem solving Support student inquiry by relaying the importance of good questions and continued questioning Methods for Assessing Effectiveness The teachers will be able to determine the level of learning based on the quality and complexity of student projects and successfulness using the technology. Observation will be important in assessing the effectiveness of the grant. Are students successful in completing the tasks, interacting with the lessons, or motivated to learn specific skills? Are they able to complete more advanced skills as we progress through lessons? All items purchased through this grant are aligned with National and State standards from science, technology, and math. Estimated number of students to benefit from project for current and subsequent years The technology purchased through this grant can be used with ALL students with the focus on students in grades K 3. 42 Innovative Technology Grant Form B : Entry # 74 Your Name Meggan King Your mking@epsne.org Project Title Health Smart Projector Date of Request 03/17/2017 Curriculum Areas Involved P.E. & Health Project Description (What) To have installed in the classroom an interactive SMART projector. This would allow teachers to continue using traditional classroom practices while adding relevance to this generation with modern technology. Rather than only having the capability to project and click through presentations, this projector will allow teachers to write, adding notes to the image being projected. Students can also interact with the projection, using the pen and tablet or interacting with the white board itself. It provides all the benefits of a SMART board without the loss of the regular white board or the necessity and limitations of a specific program needed for the SMART board. It will work with the software already available on student and teacher laptops. Project Purpose/Benefit/Rationale to Student Learning (Why) Research supports the benefits of using the most recent technology in the classroom. According to an article by Kelly Sheridan in Information Week, August 2013 entitled, Blended Learning Improves Test Scores, "a new study by the Rand Corporation and the Department of Education gives new credibility to the popular notion that blended learning a combination of traditional classroom methods with computer mediated activities can improve student test scores. According to "Educators using high levels of collaboration technology with best practices are up to 3X more likely to report positive results on a range of education outcomes." With our growing district, schools and teachers are having to be creative in using the buildings to their potential and "technology mix creates flexible learning environments." Overall, "Technology supports collaborative learning. Collaborative learning prepares students for future successes. It develops social skills, facilitates information retention, improves the learning experience and enhances creativity." If we are to prepare our students for today s world, we need to provide them with opportunities to become comfortable using today s technology. Methods for Assessing Effectiveness To assess the effectiveness of the using the SMART projector, I will daily utilize formative assessment and engagement strategies. I will also compare District Common Assessment data from year to year. Estimated number of students to benefit from project for current and subsequent years Approximately 550 students will benefit from the SMART projector every year it is in use as I teach all graders at EVV.
