Today, it serves primarily as a headquarters for administration, although it still contains classrooms, harking back to a time when it was a crossroads where students learned, ate meals, and resided. This structure is actually the third building to stand on the site. It was built in 1879, the same year in which the previous building was destroyed by fire. The Golden Dome was added to this building in 1882 and was most recently regilded in The regilding process uses only about a fistful of gold leaf to cover the entire structure. Atop the Dome, you will find a 19-foot-tall, 4,000-pound statue of Mary, the Mother of God, Notre Dame ( Our Lady ). With this beautiful adornment, the Main Building is 187 feet tall, making it the second tallest structure on campus after the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Shamrock Series The Shamrock Series is Notre Dame s home-away-from-home game series, which began in 2009 when the first game of the series was played in San Antonio at the Alamodome (Alamo Bowl). The series went on to New York in 2010 at Yankee Stadium (New York Yankees); Washington, D.C., in 2011 at FedEx Field (Washington Redskins); Chicago in 2012 at Soldier Field (Chicago Bears); Dallas in 2013 at AT&T Stadium (Dallas Cowboys); Indianapolis in 2014 at Lucas Oil Stadium (Indianapolis Colts); Boston in 2015 at Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox); and returned to San Antonio in 2016 at the Alamodome. The Shamrock Series was on hold for 2017, as the Campus Crossroads Project was opened. In 2018, the Irish return to Yankee Stadium (New York Yankees) vs. Syracuse on Nov. 17th at 2:30 p.m. The Shirt In its 29 th year, The Shirt Project began in 1990 as a means to raise money to fund Notre Dame student activities, a cause it continues to support today. Visit theshirt.nd.edu for more information. The Shirt 2018 highlights the strong, unbreakable unity of our Notre Dame family. From our dedicated fans to our talented players, the Notre Dame family is unlike that of any other University. A goal line stand is the dominant feature on the back of the design, reminding fans world-wide that the Fighting Irish always fight to the end regardless of the odds, great or small. The memory of legendary football coach Ara Parseghian will echo throughout the stadium as 27

28 the Shirt prominently features his famous saying We Have No Breaking Point. The color of The Shirt is a return to a true Kelly green that our fans have not seen since Shuttles Shuttles begin at 6:00 a.m. and operate until 2 hours post game or until all lines are gone for guests. Stadium Enhancement Facts Many enhancements were made to Notre Dame Stadium prior to the 2017 season. Some include: Outdoor club-level seating within the east and west buildings. Terraces adorn each of these buildings, allowing for a view of both campus and the playing field. Benches and drink rails now appear throughout the concourses. The backs of the benches were constructed from reclaimed bleacher wood, as were the drink rails. 28

29 Portable concession stands, condiment stands, and trash/recycling were introduced. Lower bowl concessions facades were painted to highlight the original beadboard trim from the 1930s stadium, and every stand was outfitted with multiple video monitors that can feature game coverage, menu options, or both. Floor graphics in this area bring the feeling of the field inside the concourses. Fans know if they are standing on the extended 20-, 30-, 40- or 50-yard line. These field graphics also serve as a way-finding cue to identify where fans are in areas within the stadium. The entire lower bowl was reseated, with seats now two inches wider than in the past. The "gold" seats are now blue. The video board in the south end zone (96 feet across by 54 feet high) enhances the fan experience and generates a greater level of excitement. The content features live game action, replays, celebratory moments in Notre Dame history, and the promotion of Notre Dame core values. Ribbon boards run the length of Corbett Family Hall and Duncan Student Center, and are approximately 3.75 feet in height. Like the video board, these ribbons feature key game information, stats, out of town scores, and important messaging. Video monitors (149 of them, most of them 55 inches in width) in various locations throughout the concourses emphasize a special focus on concession stand facades. The audio system features concert-quality sound. A speaker array flanks each side of the video board in the south end of the stadium, and a new sound system was installed in the concourse areas. An open, fan-facing Wi-Fi network is available throughout the seating area of the bowl and the concourses, allowing fans to more easily stay connected with their mobile devices. Notre Dame partnered with AmpThink to design and build the network, with approximately 1,200 access points installed throughout the bowl and concourse. Cellular coverage was enhanced through the addition of a distributed antenna system (DAS). The old press box was removed, replaced by additional seating, and moved to the east side of the stadium. NBC Sports still broadcasts home football games from the west side of the stadium. Enhancements to the south side of the stadium included a redesigned Frank Leahy Gate, creating a grand entrance to Notre Dame Stadium. Stadium Map (see Appendix) Stadium Tours Tours of Notre Dame Stadium are offered throughout the year. For more information, including current tour dates and times, visit und.com/tours. Please Note: Stadium tours are NOT available beginning at noon on Thursday and all day Friday and Saturday of home game weekends. Free Tunnel Tours are available on home game Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Knute Rockne Gate. 29
