17 A. Clinton Wieden, SWD President Brothers of the Southwest District, It is once again my privilege to stand before you as the Southwest District President. It s hard for me to believe that I ve held this position for a full biennium few get the privilege to hold this office, and even fewer for more than one term. I am truly fortunate that you, the brothers of this district, have allowed me to serve you. It continues to be a period of growth for the Southwest District. This year saw the addition of two new colonies, at Houston Baptist University and Northwestern Oklahoma State University, to go along with our previously established colonies at the University of Texas at El Paso and Paul Quinn College. We remain the largest district in the country, with a staggering 50 active chapters. As far as the council year, it has been a good year. The Southwest District has been fortunate this year to have a very dedicated group of officers. Our year began in Texas with the Chapter Leadership Conference and District Day. Summer council meetings were held at the Summer Leadership Symposium. All of these events were enjoyable and informative. Over the course of the year, the council has been diligent in its efforts to make the convention worthwhile. Those efforts have included numerous online meetings, a rescheduled winter council meeting, and all sorts of ideas on what would make a good convention experience. I can only hope our efforts have proven successful for you. One of the highlights of the council year is workshop season, which allows us to meet with brothers from around the district on a more personal level. This year s workshops were a lot of fun, and taught all in attendance some new things. For example, at North Texas Workshop, we learned that Moses yes, he of Biblical fame was actually a bad leader. At Oklahoma Workshop, we learned that Custer fought at the Alamo, not Little Big Horn. The West Texas/New Mexico workshop provided a great educational experience for all attendees, and also a chance to meet cookie magnate Famous Amos. Arkansas Workshop brought even more fun, and while I missed Louisiana, South Texas provided a good wrap-up to workshop season. Some may have been a little more interesting than others, but all of this year s workshops were outstanding, and the hosts are to be commended. That brings us to this weekend, and the culmination of another year s work. It doesn t really seem like a year has passed, but I guess time flies when you re having fun. On to the thank-yous for the year To the Tau Beta Sigma District Council I know it s been an interesting year for you all, but you ve time and again shown the abilities that make you suited for these roles. It s been a treat to work with you, and thank you for your service. To Derek Harris I know you didn t come aboard under the best of circumstances, but you made a seamless transition. You ve kept things light while getting things done, and that s not easy to do. Your passion for the Fraternity has always been apparent, and I ve truly enjoyed working with you. To Karen Norton I don t know what I ve heard more from you discussion of business, or Oh my gosh over your chapter s latest escapades. Either way, there are few who love Kappa Kappa Psi as much as you. We ve all been fortunate to have you as a resource this year, and even more fortunate to have you as a friend.

18 To Anna Rivera You were the one I didn t know coming into this year, and it s been fun getting to know you. You ve done a great job this year, and I wish you good luck with your future endeavors. To Holly Tetreault You ve always shown a love of Kappa Kappa Psi and a desire to succeed. Sometimes our goals may have conflicted, but your commitment never has. Thanks for your service to the Southwest District. To Dr. David Scott Working with you at the District Leadership Conference was a great opportunity that brought more insight into the commitment you have to Kappa Kappa Psi. I hope that the future brings you more opportunities to express that. Thank you for your work as governor. That brings me to the part of this speech I ve known would come, but I ve wished would not. Serving on the Southwest District Council these past three years has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I cannot imagine what the last three years would have been like without it, because my council experience was such an important part of them. While I do have some time left in my academic career, my scholastic responsibilities have grown more difficult graduate school will do that. I also believe that opportunity must be shared, and I ve had my turn. With National Convention approaching and the biennium drawing to a close, the changes that are soon to come combined with those facts make this the right time to say goodbye. I have been fortunate to know so many great individuals through the district council, and I am unfortunately limited on time and cannot mention them all. But, there are some who I must acknowledge. Dusty Brown and Chris Foster: you showed countless brothers and sisters how it all should be done. You were both a tough act to follow, but you provided the model for how to do this job and without that knowledge, I would have floundered. Thanks for your friendship. Nicole Burdick and Randy Kitchens: you have both been everything I could have asked for in a counterpart. Though we ve worked together in different ways, the knowledge and ability you both possess have made this job a little easier, and that can be tough to do. It has been a privilege to work with both of you. Chris Gordon: if ever someone was suited for a job, it s Mom as the District Counselor. You ve provided wonderful perspective on so many issues, and have provided a much-needed view from the other side. Thanks for all that you do. Adam Cantley: any time I ve had a question, you ve been there. Any time you thought I needed something more, you ve been there too. There have been few brothers who I could classify as invaluable to this experience, and you are most certainly one of them. It has been an honor to call you my colleague and friend these past few years. Brian Beck: I truly believe that the role of the big brother is one of the most important roles in Kappa Kappa Psi. I know it s true in this instance, because without the guidance you gave me, I would never have been able to accomplish what I have within the Fraternity. Your friendship and counsel provided the foundation for everything I have been able to do. It is a bittersweet day for me, but I m glad that you are here to share it.

19 Danny George: quite simply, I couldn t have done this without you. You have been the guiding hand of the district these past few years, making sure we stay on track and setting a positive example. You ve always listened when I ve had questions, concerns, or just needed to blow off some steam. Those who have not had the chance to work with you really don t know what they re missing. It has been an honor to serve with you. The Alpha Chapter: what more can I say that I haven t said already? You all are like family, and I can think of no other chapter of which I d rather be part. I ve said this each year, but it is still the truth of all the opportunities Kappa Kappa Psi has presented me, the greatest has been to call each of you my brother. The hard work you have done for the bands, for the convention, for everything is readily apparent, and it is starting to pay off in so many ways. I am nothing but proud to be counted as a brother of Alpha. In closing, I must again state how great a privilege it has been to serve you these past three years on the district council. I can only hope that my service has been a benefit for each of you. Three years ago, I stood before this district as a kid who wasn t sure what he was doing, but thought that district council sounded like fun. I ran what was probably the worst campaign in the history of the Southwest District Council if you were at the 2004 convention, you remember how bad it was. In fact, I first met Danny when he came up to me in that hotel business center and said, Hi, I m Danny George. Since you re running for council, I thought I should meet you. That campaign was a train wreck, but somehow, it worked. Now, three years later, I do know what I m doing, and I could never have imagined how much fun this really would be, or how far I would be able to go. I am going to miss this so much, for so many reasons. This has been one hell of a ride, but all good things must come to an end, and if they must, there s no better place than home. 20 C. Anna MacDonald Rivera, SWD Secretary/Treasurer Hello Brothers of the Southwest, Usually these reports are teary and sometimes a little sad and sappy; well, this one isn t going to be. I have had a wonderful year serving the Great Southwest. As I recap on the past year of serving, there will be a lot of thank-yous and I realize that not one word that I write in this report can truly express how much I have grown and learned from this experience with all of you. You are truly the greatest district in this fraternity; I am exceedingly lucky to be apart of this district and to serve you in this office. The first expedition that I took was to Delta Sigma for District Day! Though I am not a huge baseball fan I enjoyed meeting many brothers and having baseball explained to me. My second huge adventure was traveling to the Dallas Symposium with Holly. This was the first of many long road trips. I am proud to say that we only got lost once and Holly is an awesome road companion. The first chapter that I journeyed to was the Eta Nu chapter at Southeastern Oklahoma State University for OK Area Workshop and learned that Custer led the Alamo and the Beatles are almost as famous as Jesus. Derek, thanks for keeping me awake for this trip. The brothers are awesome and way too peppy at 8 in the morning. About a week later I went to the WT/NM workshop at the Univ. of NM, go Lobos! Thanks Matt for the use of your spare room and most comfortable daybed also to RP, Gaither, and Clint for driving. For those of you who have never been to NM they have an awesome chapter and sense of brotherhood! Oh, and the sunrises are great too. Next to Louisiana. What a Drive! To: my Lil Amanda and Beth A. (TBS) for keeping me wake and for saving me from the bathroom stalker guy. From SWOSU it was about a 10 hour drive but it was great. The Workshop was awesome and the entertainment during break was great. Stephen F Austin! Thanks Jamal for your floor and with trusting me with your house key. Thanks for a great workshop! I enjoyed the speakers and you are an awesome chapter! This year our allotment for the fall was Fall Allotment- $ , Budget for the Year- $2600. Fall Mail out, Minutes and Constitution were posted to the website. Penny wars are continuing. Choose an Officer to get pied with your money. I have started a Service fundraiser..(explanation) I hope this will continue to the future. I am trying to create a booklet full of the great ideas that you have for fundraising to help better serve your bands. Thank-yous: Matt Baggerly! 21 Derek, though you came in late, and had doubts about yourself, you are leaving with a band! You have great ideas and actually follow through. That is a good trait to have. You showed me how to prioritize and still be able to have passion, you have a cool head and are what I consider the rock of are group. Thanks you for always being a positive light, even when you are on drugs and are passing out. Holly! First, thank you for introducing me to Panera, second thanks for answering all of my questions and the encouragement, being real, and the laughs and fun times on the trip to Dallas. Thank you for encouraging me to run for this office and the continued support after I was elected to serve. Clint: You are a great leader and are going to do great things in your life. I know that your passion for KKPsi has helped to further this district and make it greater. Danny and Dr. Scott, thanks for being great governors. Thanks for your words of wisdom and criticism when we need it! Thank your for allowing us to have are ideas and your advice and letting us run with them. The District! You are a great District! The amount of brotherhood and friendship that you have shown me this year was overwhelming and I am so happy to have served you this past year. Thank you for choosing me as your Sec-Treas. Karen Norton, SWD Co-Member-at-Large Brothers of the Southwest District, I know everyone always stands up here and says how hard it is to believe that a year has already passed and it seems like just yesterday that they were taking oath for this office well, I m standing here today to tell you it s true. I can hardly believe what the past year has brought to the SWD and what the past year has brought to me as a brother as well. It never ceases to amaze me how bright the future is for the SWD. The people I met, the old friends I was reunited with they all reminded me why I love to do this. You the brothers I meet at workshops, conventions, or at 1 o clock in the morning for a couch to crash on you are all the reason that I wake up in the morning and smile. You re all the reason I was so proud to be able to represent the Southwest District. On to my duties I definitely did my fair share of traveling this year. I saw various rituals throughout the year, but I must recognize the Lambda Pi chapter at UT-Tyler and commend them on a fantastic first third degree ritual. Watching the first class cross in a brand new chapter was an amazing thing. I can t wait to see where they go from here! I made it to the Chapter Leadership Conference but was unable to stay for District Day due to some Henderson Band Camp responsibilities. I heard Delta Sigma did a great job as usual, though! After that was the Dallas Leadership Symposia, which was phenomenal. That was the council s first chance to really meet as a whole and that was a very special night to me (besides the fact that I got to see Superman Returns in I-MAX 3D!!). All the workshops that I attended were fantastic. A special thanks goes out to the folks responsible for the Oklahoma workshop. Not only were your couches especially comfortable, but the workshop on The History of Rock is probably the most unique workshop topic I ve ever seen. Thank you for being fresh, new, and totally yourselves! I ve never been good with talking about things I ve done and trying to make myself sound like I did my job like I was supposed to. Did I do everything I could have in my office? Absolutely not. I still see so many things I would like to change and so many things that I wish I had taken the time to research and set plans into action. Perhaps this new council will finally take this district by the haunches and lead them to the top of the nation where they belong. Speaking of nation GO TO NATIONAL CONVENTION. Enough said. Now on to my thank-yous: CFRs Jen Murdock and Phil Rubin Between the stories of Chester and Hester and That s nice real, real nice I think I formed friendships that will last a lifetime. I was just one person in a district full of people and you both took the time to listen to me and help me on every endeavor I undertook. Between coffee with Jen at our illustrious coffee house and seeing Phil on the sideline at our marching band rehearsal I formed a respect for these two people that few

23 people will know. Thank you for your time, advice, sincerity, and love. I couldn t have asked for better role models within the fraternity. Matt Baggerly Even though I ve hardly seen you this past year I want to thank you for setting the example for this year s council. Your humble nature and your earnest willingness to strive truly made a mark on me. Thank you for continuing to serve and for being the kind of SWD Officer that I could strive to be like. Adam Cantley Two years ago I sat on a bed in the empty CFR house and told you my dreams of running for district council. I was a lowly sophomore at the time and in my first full year as a brother. I was a chapter historian with vague dreams of what I could accomplish for this fraternity. You took those vague dreams, filled them with hope, and helped me make them happen. Your dedication to this organization and every single brother in it is such an inspiration to me. And even though I won t read this sentence out-loud at convention, I felt the need to say something to you DUTCHESS!!!! My Director of Bands (Mr. Jesse Leyva) and Sponsors (Mr. Jon Whitaker and Dr. Jeri-Mae Astolfi) Even though you won t hear this and you ll probably never read this, I still feel the strong urge to thank you in front of this crowd of brothers. Your support for me over the year(s) has been phenomenal. I couldn t ask for a better set of people to be an example to me not only as a brother but as a person in general. Thank you for your hours of counseling and advice and for the opportunities you have provided me with. You are so much of the reason I have been able to come as far as I have. Derek Harris My other half what can I say? You may have come into this council late in the game but that didn t dampen the fire you have for this organization in the least. You came in with both guns blazing, ready to make a difference. And a difference you made! You were always there for me when I needed you and you weren t afraid to question authority or the way things have always been done. You were the one I could count on to say what I was thinking but was too afraid to say. You re going to accomplish so many amazing things and I love you very much! Anna MacDonald Rivera Your willingness to learn about this organization and the way this district functions always amazed me. You stayed on top of your game all year long and you were the constant source of comfort and peace within an often tumultuous council. Your smile and sweetness is by far your strongest asset and one I am so grateful that you brought to this council. Best of luck in running for office again this year! Holly Tetreault Honestly, what is there to say? You are one of the most amazing people I ve ever met and there s no doubt in my mind that I was meant to be on council with you just so I could have the pleasure of knowing you. I can still remember talking to you for the first time at National Convention in Lexington I told you I wanted to run for Co-Mal that next year and you were so supportive and informative. You re so much of the reason I m standing here today and I m just going to stop blabbing right now because no words could express the love and admiration I have for you.

24 Clint Wieden Your knowledge of this fraternity is mind-boggling. Your familiarity with every chapter in the district often caught me off-guard, but even better was your willingness to help everyone else know and understand the chapters like you did. I ll never forget our talk out in the lobby of the hotel at the District Leadership Conference and I m still thankful for that to this day. Thank you for so many amazing years of leadership within this district and for being someone I could count on to keep my feet firmly planted on the ground. I wish you nothing but the best, Clint, and thanks. Dr. Scott Our time together at the DLC opened my eyes to the passion you have for this organization and all the potential that you see for us as a district. Please continue to pass this passion along to district councils to come and thank you for your time and service over the past year. Danny George What can I say, Pops? The name rings true yet again. You immediately took me beneath your wings and taught me how to fly on my own. The faith you ve shown in me is undeserved, but appreciated. You re such an amazing example to every brother in this room and across the nation and it is something very special to me to be able to say that I got to work handin-hand with you over the past year. Thank you, Danny, and I love you. PS Thanks for the directions to the movies! :) And finally to my chapter Theta Phi. You guys are my life. It is because of you that I was able to become a part of this great organization and it is still because of you that I continue to progress further and further into its core. Your support has been amazing and I couldn t ask for a more amazing group of people to be associated with. I may have been on SWD Council for a year, but I was always first and foremost a brother of Theta Phi. The times we ve shared on the road and on the marching field are memories I will never forget. Don t make fun for me for crying! Just know that each and every one of you has made an impact on my life and I just hope the whole district can see the love I have for you and for where I ve come from. SHOWBAND!! In conclusion, we as the SWD are on an upward path. We must continue to strive and never become satisfied with being mediocre. We must push one another, but only after we ve learned to push OURSELVES. You must each decide on your own to strive daily before you can begin to push others as well. Work hard, set a good example, and continue to make Boh and our founding fathers proud of what they started so long ago. Thank you, SWD, for an amazing year. 25 E. Derek Harris, SWD Co-Member-at-Large To the Brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi, Southwest District This was a year of mixed emotions and mixed results. The frustration of handling an office that I ve rarely felt prepared for has been balanced with, and now, overwhelmed by, the joy of experiencing so many good times this year. The District Council, long before I was accepted into this office, was warm and welcoming when I told them I was applying. And every one of you that I ve spent time with has had nothing but open arms. The Family Tree project continued this year with little change in the overall. We added the chapters that were inducted this last year, and worked to find pieces of the missing puzzle of our district. This is an ongoing project. It is contingent on the documentation of our chapter activities, just like any other historian-reliant project. I ask that you keep up with every single scrap of paper your chapter uses and to enthusiastically document every activity or event in your chapter and your band. The Southwest District has done a good job this year getting in history forms. We have increased the number from last year by about 40%, which is dramatic. A total of 18 forms, both ed and snail-mailed. That s not bad. That s also not even half the district. I want to stress to you, the leaders of your chapters, to take initiative in filling out the History form and all the other award applications. Most of it can take no time at all. The rest can be knocked out with accurate planning. It is important that we receive as many of these applications as possible. This next year, when a chapter s the next Co-MAL and wants to know what their chapter did the year before, we can offer them a copy. Not all chapters are meticulous with their paperwork, so the Co-MAL is, for your sakes. The History form is one of the limited ways we have of documenting the origins and traditions of a chapter from year to year. We welcome any historical document your chapter may hold: a petitioning document, an old copy of a chapter constitution, old photographs of your chapter, etc. However, the history form is a questionnaire that asks some important questions about traditions and activities of your chapter. It is a profile that allows us to research and compare one chapter to the next for inspiration and better service. In this next year, please make it a priority to thoroughly complete the History Form and get it sent in, even if it means a month late. The more forms, the better. The more on-time forms, the more likely you will qualify for an award. My hope is that next year, we are handing out history awards to 30 chapters, and the next year, 45 history awards. Of course, it all starts at home. Now, the thank you portion of the report: To the brothers of Kappa Phi, Beta Lambda, Beta Delta, Epsilon Epsilon, Alpha, Theta Phi and a small heap of other chapters I m forgetting as I write this, thank you all the things you ve done this year. Thank you to the Tau Beta Sigma District Council: Your actions this semester has gone to further prove my ill-founded theory, that TBS is simply better at meetings. We screw around and always run behind; you guys are in and out in 15 minutes. Good work, gonna miss ya. To Karen Norton: Of all of us on the council, and probably in the district, you possess the most drive and love for this fraternity, and because of that, you ve had to make powerful decisions about what step to take next. I m excited for your future. And if nothing else, your insights have set our feet back on the road of brotherhood when we d gotten lost in petty squaubles. Thank you for your passion, and I hope you re never more than a phone call away. To Anna Rivera: Thank you for the long drives and the long talks. You and I have connected in a way I didn t expect to happen. And the sense of fellowship that follows you and your chapter is one that should be modeled. My heart goes out to you and your husband in your new life together. He is a brave soul. I ve always got your back, and don t be a stranger. To Holly Tetreault: You are easily the most ambitious person I know. You are the first to jump at an opportunity, the first to volunteer, and the first to shake a hand. I admit, I admire your forthrightness, and I know you and I will be crossing paths and collaborating for years to come. Thanks for letting me crash on your couch, and thanks for being there to root me on in the very beginning. To Clint Wieden: Two years of service, and amidst all your other responsibilities and obligations, I still feel that you wake up every day and give 120% to this district and to this brotherhood. You are the mover, the shaker, and the mechanisms behind the works of this council. Thank you for everything you ve done, and thank you for being a friend these two years.

27 To Dr. David Scott: You are the invisible hand of this district. The choices you ve made in regards to your duties as governor have been important and noteworthy, and I wish I d been able to work closer with you. As we move into the next year, I hope your fervor for this brotherhood grows even stronger. To Mr. Danny George: This is your fault. I m absolutely convinced you were trying to drop hints last summer at DLC that I should be on the council. And if you weren t always sitting next to me at workshops, writing me little notes or dropping little bugs in my ears about what steps I ought to be taking next, I d probably be thinking of quietly fading into the background when this is over. I m just plain gonna miss you, Danny, and I hope that you ll always be around where you keep goading me into taking more chances. This district loves you, this council loves you, and we will always be in need of your guiding hand. Bless you Danny. To the Alpha Psi chapter at West Texas A&M University: This semester, in particular, has been very difficult for me. I ve been student teaching, and I ve learned how much you guys have all meant to me in the last few years. My time with you is up, but you guys are my truest brothers, and I d be hard pressed to think of myself as anything other than a brother of Alpha Psi. And finally, to the Southwest District: This is your time. It is always your time. Yet, occasionally, we will need to look back at where we have been to see where we should go next. This is the power of hindsight, but that power is diminished when we don t keep accurate records. Every day, your chapter does something exemplary for your band. Document this. Keep every copy of all your minutes. Take pictures. Go to convention and take pictures. Keep every promotional flyer, brochure or stained napkin you make. The more we do to remember the now, the more we have available to us to guide our future. It has been an honor to serve you all. Go to National Convention. Stay in touch. 28 F. Daniel George, SWD Governor April 14, 2007 Brothers of the Southwest, What a busy year it has been. Busy all around. There were chapters doing service for their bands in the fall semester. There are chapters doing great things for the bands now in the spring semester. The District Governors had an opportunity this year to recommend 5 of the top chapters from our district to the National Council for consideration as Chapter Leadership Finalists. Congratulations to the Alpha Chapter at Oklahoma State University and the Theta Phi Chapter at Henderson State University for being named Chapter Leadership Finalists this Biennium. Also, thanks to the workshop hosts this year. It is always a good thing to look beyond and do things for others. The time in planning the days and setting up speakers does not go unnoticed. I especially want to thank the Gamma Iota Chapter at the University of New Mexico for giving me the opportunity to play with the Lobos Pep Band after their workshop. This was the best workshop experience ever! Also thanks to the Epsilon Delta Chapter at Texas A&M Commerce for hosting when I went to present the A. Frank Martin Award to Mr. Jeffrey Stone. In 1994, I stood on this very stage to give my first District President Report at our Southwest District Kappa Kappa Psi 75 th Anniversary Celebration. It is quite fitting that my very first address and my last address to the Southwest District as District representative are in the exact same location. Yes, you heard correctly in earlier reports. I am resigning/retiring from the position as Southwest District Governor when my term ends at the National Convention in Orlando, Florida. A big part of the resignation is due to my work schedule and demands that my job has placed on me during the last year. The last thing that we need in this District is leadership that is not leading you. Time commitments and life is catching up with me and demanding more of my time which takes time away from you and you deserve better than that. Let me assure you that this was a very, very hard decision to make. I have especially had second thoughts this weekend, but I have to realize that I am on the convention wave and experiencing the fraternity high. I love this District and the brothers in it with every ounce of my body. I could go on and on, but I ll get teary eyed and you ll get bored or laugh at me, so I ll start the thanks. Keep your ears open for snippets of wisdom. David, I thank you for another great year working together. I encourage you to step in more and give advice whenever you want.

29 Chris Gordon, I still believe that Tau Beta Sigma found a beautiful rare jewel when they appointed you as Counselor. It has been a pleasure to serve with you once again. Derek, you were the last person added to the council, but you certainly earned your spot on the council during the workshop seasons. Thank you for your dedication. Karen, you are so all around talented. You are a great leader for your chapter, your school and the district. You even inspire me to be a better brother. Good luck to you as you focus on your studies next year! Anna, you have been a bright spot on the council this year. It has been great seeing you mature on the council this year. Holly, you also did some growing this year. I know it hasn t been easy for you, but I hope that you are glad that you stayed around this year. Times like these make you stronger and teach us so much about ourselves. Clint, we made it another year. Thank you for your continued love and dedication to Kappa Kappa Psi and the Southwest District. I know that you had some struggles this year, but those things help you to grow into a better person. I think that this is what I will miss most about being a District Governor - Helping students to learn to apply themselves in a different way to the larger District Arena. It is not always an easy task to take on this challenge, but it can be a very rewarding one. I want to thank all of the individuals who were on the councils with me in the past.
