1 Kappa Strong: Inspiring Achievement in the Community 85th Northeastern Province Council March 19-22, 2015 Greetings! The Boston Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi (ΚΑΨ) Fraternity, Incorporated will proudly host the 85 th Northeastern Province Council meeting held at the Westin Waltham in March Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is an international fraternal organization comprised predominantly of 185,000 African- American men who are committed to making positive strides within their community and across the globe. In conjunction, we will also host the National Silhouette Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, an auxiliary organization comprised of the wives and widows of Fraternity members. Collegiate and alumni members from New England to Delaware will attend the conference which also includes members from chapters in the United Kingdom and Germany. In March 2015, we expect over 1,500 attendees to our various events. Kappa Alpha Psi has been a vital part of many college campuses and local communities and vehemently adheres to our motto of Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor. In fact, Boston is home to one of the earliest chapters of Kappa Alpha Psi (Chi Chapter) that recently celebrated 90 years of service to Greater Boston. New to this year s Province Council is the forum Keeping The Promise: A Conversation on Children, Community and Commitment. On Thursday, March 19, 2015 Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. along with several national and local partners will convene a public meeting and conversation around the challenges and best practices that are impacting the educational, psychological and social environments of those young people in underserved communities in urban centers. 2 on the experiences and expectations that are necessary for the growth and achievement of those that have historically been left behind. The program will also highlight the various ways in which social and community based organizations, such as Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., have utilized achievement as a model for change and success in communities nationally. Kappa Alpha Psi seeks to continue addressing the contemporary needs of the African-American and the broader community through its programming. 3 About Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity was founded on the campus of Indiana University on January 5, Early in the 20th century, African-American students were faced with enormous challenges in attending colleges and universities. Those who were fortunate enough to overcome the financial obstacles had to endure the discrimination and racial bias that plagued our country during that time. Despite the objections of many, ten high-achieving students persevered and formed Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated which remains the only Greek letter organization which chartered its first Chapter on the University's campus. Since its inception, the Fraternity's fundamental purpose is Achievement in every field of human endeavor. The founders sought a formula that would immediately raise the sights of Black collegians and stimulate them to accomplishments higher than they might have imagined. As such, they fashioned achievement as the purpose of the organization, and Kappa Alpha Psi began its 103-year history of uniting college men of culture, patriotism, and honor in a bond of fraternity. For more information about Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, visit the website at About The National Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated Founded in 1945, the National Silhouettes is comprised of the wives and widows of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, who provide support and assistance for the activities of the Fraternity at Grand Chapter, Province, and Local levels. Adhering to a philosophy of Self-realization Through Service, the Silhouette chapters work to implement national service projects, establish uniform policies and procedures for all local chapters, and most importantly serve as the official auxiliary to the Fraternity. 4 About Boston Alumni Chapter In 1919, Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc. began to establish Alumni Chapters. These chapters are designated by geographical location and are comprised of college graduate members who have established residence in close proximity to each corresponding chapter. On June 3, 1950, the Boston Alumni Chapter was chartered by: Charles E. Anderson, Arthur B. Calvin, Jackson W. Campbell, Herbert Barron Dowse, Abraham B. Fisher, James Paul Goss Jr., Dr. Henry Hill, Ernest M. Hunt, Dr. Albert C. Johnson, and Charles A. Knowles. Boston Alumni during its 60 plus year history has been at the forefront of leadership in Boston s African- American community and beyond. Members of Boston Alumni have been Province Polemarch, (Regional President), President of the NAACP, pastors of several churches, leaders in Academia, Science, Medicine, Arts, Government, Non-Profits and in Business. Today the Boston area has approximately 200 members of the Fraternity in every field of human endeavor. In addition to volunteering and collaborating, with local charities on projects like Thanksgiving baskets and shelter donations, the Boston Alumni Chapter has three major initiatives we support long term. The Manny Wilson Educational and Basketball League (MWEBL) celebrated its 20th anniversary in May of This program, in collaboration with the Yawkey Boys and Girls Club of Roxbury, services an average of 135 young people between the ages of 6 and 13 through a four-month experience. The Boston Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the MWEBL formed a partnership seven years ago, resulting in the birth of the educational initiative was born. While the origin of the program is in sports, specifically basketball, the fabric of its purpose has become academics. The young people are divided into two divisions, Pee-Wee (6-9 year-olds) and Junior (10-13 year-olds), respectively, where they compete in games each Saturday between the months of December and March. After each game, the teams are required to attend a focused study hall where they are mentored and tutored in a 3:1 setting in various core subject areas. The members of the Boston Alumni Chapter serve as coaches, mentors, tutors and administrators within the program. Boston Kappa League was established on the campus of Northeastern University in Boston Massachusetts on May 15, 2010 by Boston Alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. The mission of the Boston Kappa League is to empower at-risk youth in our community to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their personal potential. Through Boston Kappa League membership, young men from 7th grade to college sophomores, experience the fraternal bonds of brotherhood, commitment to academic, achievement, value of integrity and recognition of social responsibility to one s community. During the last 3 years of operation, Kappa League Boston has mentored over 50 inner-city youth, in Boston and Rhode Island; with over 650 hours of programming and community service. KLI s curriculum is grouped into 5 specific club oriented activities. These activities contribute towards the social, emotional and academic enhancement of our members. [4]

5 Jackson W. Campbell Scholarship: Through our 501c(3), GBKC, the Boston Alumni annually awards a scholarship to deserving young men of color as they enter their Freshman year of college. Since 1988 we have recognized that sustaining the next generation of leaders in our communities will require an investment in their future. The Boston Alumni chapter has provided over $100,000 in scholarships over the last 25 years. About Chi Chapter The Chi Chapter, founded Feb. 15, 1924, is the undergraduate home of Kappa Alpha Psi for students at: Boston College, Berklee, Boston University, Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tufts and Northeastern. Chi chapter has served the Boston community for the past nine decades through educational programming and over the past three years through youth mentoring. Authors, ministers, politicians, professional athletes, musicians and various other dynamic leaders alike call Chi Chapter their home. Among our ranks are: Aaron Snipe (US Ambassador), Steve Pemberton (Top 20 Chief Diversity Officer/Author/Inspirational Speaker), Monte Ford (Director of Akamai and former CIO of American Airlines) and Steve Richard (SVP of NBA). In addition to regular participation with Boston Kappa League, the Chi Chapter volunteers weekly with the Paul Robeson Institute. In this program, Chi Chapter mentors middle-school students of color imparting life skills, African-American history, tutoring and guidance that is transformative. The students are taught discipline and self-love that translates into dignity.
