Founded by alumnu Jon Monett (IE 64), the QL+ Lab ha already generated multiple multidiciplinary project including: n ERB PROSTHETIC HAND ME tudent Max Maloney, Matt Griebel and Nickola Butler are collaborating to update and redeign the Erb Conformable-Grap prothetic hand, originally developed in the early The updated hand will be inexpenive, lightweight, and fit a wide range of amputee arm ize and remaining limb ize. It will be intuitively functional, meaning control of the hand will require little conciou thought. It outer covering will maintain anatomic fidelity and a cloely a poible mimic the appearance and functionality of a natural hand. n ADAPTIVE WHEELCHAIR A tudent team compried of Mark Azzarello, Brian Robinon, Jaon Della Roa and Dean Swenon are working on a wheelchair deign that will make it poible for wheelchair rider to re-experience nature independently, without the need to purchae Pleae ee QL+ on Back Page (8) Opening door Cal Poly Engineering: Bridge to the future Cal Poly Steel Bridge team, hown praticing peed contruction of their bridge, helped Cal Poly Society of Civil Engineer (SCE) pull off a threepeat at the American Society of Civil Engineer (ASCE) Pacific Southwet Regional Conference lat April. The group wa named the overall conference champion for the third year in a row, bringing Cal Poly winning record to 14 out of the lat 16 year. Cal Poly teel bridge engineer placed 2nd in Stiffne, 2nd in Structural Efficiency, 1t in Contruction Speed, 1t in Contruction Economy and 1t overall. 2 2 PIPELINE Let the unhine in: Project aim to increae efficiency of olar panel by keeping them clean AFTER DEVOTING THREE QUARTERS TO DESIGNING and building a wahing rig for olar farm, the primary take-away for the four mechanical engineering tudent working on the project wa: You can t predict everything. David Hohn, Eric Wallace, Atlund Smith, and Charlie Joy had to work with ignificant contraint in deigning a mobile rig to wah the dut from olar panel. They had to conider the water preure and ditance to the face of the panel; and they needed to facilitate run-off of the water. We had to cale down our original deign coniderably, aid Eric, but our bigget concern wa water conumption. In the end, all the team member were excited to work with a real client, Sun Power Corp., and they all found themelve highly motivated to work in the renewable energy field. n CENG Pirate project track, capture and divert dangerou UAV Electrical Engineering profeor John Saghri, center, i working with tudent Ahley Wagner (CPE), Matt Woolbridge (EE) and Huhnak Singh (EE) on the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Pirate/Silen- Track integration project. Electrical Engineering tudent Huhnak Singh IMAGINE SMALL, UNMANNED ARIEL vehicle (UAV) that are cheap, eay to build and fly, and are capable of a variety of application ranging from reconnaiance to carrying a deadly payload. Now imagine thee UAV in the hand of terrorit. Enemy UAV have, in fact, been een and captured in the Middle Eat conflict, which i why Raytheon i funding a project at Cal Poly to develop a UAV pirating ytem that would make it poible to track a UAV and capture or divert it out of harm way. Directed by EE Profeor John Saghri, the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Pirate/ SilenTrack integration project tie together Raytheon computer viion ytem (Silen- Track) and the mini radio controlled UAV Pirating ytem developed at Cal Poly. The ytem purpoe i to track the UAV peed and poition and watch how it change a ignal are ent out on different ervo channel, explain Saghri. Thi information i then ued to remap the control of the UAV to a tandard controller o that a UAV pilot can fly the plane out of the area. Saghri note that thi method of UAV takeover eliminate the need for human viual confirmation and peed up the proce of taking over the UAV. Thi alo allow the ytem to be ued without extenive knowledge of UAV or the communication ignal between the tranmitter and receiver ued for radio controlled UAV. In addition to Saghri, the Pirate project i co-upervied by Software Engineer Micheal Scott of Raytheon, who provide a corporate perpective for the tudent team member, including Travi Dean (CPE), Huhnak Singh (EE), Ahley Wager (CPE), and Matt Woolridge (EE). In a recent propoal ubmitted to the California State Park Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Diviion Grant and Cooperative Agreement Program, electrical and computer engineering profeor Lynne Slivovky and aeronautical engineering profeor Rob McDonald have outlined a project to develop two UAV including the Yamaha RMAX helicopter donated to Cal Poly Engineering by Northrop Grumman to ait the San Lui Obipo County Sheriff Search and Recue team to located lot hiker and OHMVR uer. n A team of engineering tudent led by EE profeor Lynne Slivovky, econd from right, are working on a project that would employ the RMAX unmanned helicopter for earch and recue effort.

3 Cal Poly tudent unveil new hoit to aid diabled kayaker CAL POLY ENGINEERING and Kineiology tudent unveiled their Adapted Paddle Launch Vehicle in mid-may. The device i the reult of a collaborative project aimed at helping people with diabilitie enjoy kayaking. Funded by a National Science Foundation grant, the APLV wa deigned to make the proce of loading client into boat le invaive while imultaneouly increaing afety within Cal Poly Adapted Paddling Program. The Adapted Paddling Program alo offered a free kayaking clinic to local reident with diabilitie and include a paddling experience in the Morro Bay etuary. Kineiology tudent participate a aitant intructor. Previouly, participant in the program who ued wheelchair had to be phyically lifted and placed into the kayak by tudent. Four to ix tudent were then needed to lift the kayak and walk it down the boat ramp in order to launch the kayak. A team of mechanical engineer and Kineiology tudent wa created and challenged with deviing a le invaive way of loading program participant into their kayak and then afely tranporting the kayak to the water. Dr. Jame Harri (CPE/EE), Dr. Ali Shaban (EE) and Dr. Dale Dolan (EE) are working to bring energy utainability to familie in underdeveloped nation. The Sutainable Power for Electrical Reource (SuPER) project i an example of Cal Poly pecial brand of applied reearch: tudent, even at the undergraduate level, working hand-in-hand with faculty reearcher on cutting-edge project that addre engineering global challenge. In thi cae, enior in the Electrical Engineering Department are working on SuPER, a both a enior project and long-term development project. The project involve the development of a low-cot, utainable ource of electrical power with a 20 year life cycle that can be owned by a family unit. Harri initiated SuPER out of a belief that utainable energy i key to raiing the tandard of living for the world poor. The ytem relie on olar power and battery power torage. Thi technology will provide acce to electrical power through free market mechanim, a oppoed to governmental aid, explain Harri. Aeropace Engineering n Phyical Propertie of Orbiting Object: Jacob Technology ha been working with Dr. Kira Abercromby to determine phyical characteritic of orbiting object to be ued within model to predict the future environment of object at pecific orbit. n Cal Poly Flight Tet Platform and Intrumentation Development: A Cal Poly team led by Dr. Robert McDonald will develop a flexible, modular, low-cot approach to flight tet appropriate for teting of aerodynamic model and component, and including development of flight tet intrumentation uing autonomou module. n Light Sail 1 miion: Stellar Exploration and Dr. Jordi Puig-Suari are upporting the Plantary Society Light Sail 1 Satellite Miion. Thi work i funded by the Planetary Society, which will be reponible for procuring the launch vehicle contract for thi atellite. n P-POD Integration and Launch Support: Cal Poly will upport qualification teting, fitcheck, integration, and launch ervice at variou tet and launch ite. Club member include Eli Knight, Danial Hudon and Brenton Haven. Project-Baed Learning Taking Learn by Doing to the next level The Bonderon Project Center wa once again filled with an impreive array of enior project at the 2010 Senior Deign Expo in June. Generally upported or ponored by companie or organization looking for innovation, and happy to team with Cal Poly to allow bright, innovative young tudent the opportunity to gain hand-on, often private ector experience, the project howed the power of multidiciplinary colloboration. And the range of project wa wide: From aircraft data collection project to guidable motorcycle light to robotic limb and machine enitive enough to ort out variou type of recyclable, ingenuity wa on full diplay. Amy Kronteiner and Danny Marx were two member of the evenmember A.C.D.C Aircraft Data Collection Team compried of Aero, EE and Computer Engineering tudent. The project wa commiioned by Van Aircraft, which aked the tudent to develop a ytem to collect accurate aircraft performance data to calibrate data, Kronteiner explained. The team objective wa to develop an interchangeable ytem that collect aircraft performance data in order to calibrate aircraft intrument for Van Aircraft. The tudent ought to develop a lightweight, unobtruive, independent machine which would help revolutionize the way aircraft data i collected. Marx aid working on the project wa a fantatic experience becaue I got to work on a real-world engineering project that our ponor company will actually ue. BENTLY CENTER For Engineering Innovation i ued to fund reearch in rotor dynamic, ponor graduate and undergraduate reearch, publih conference and journal paper, develop graduate coure, provide ervice to profeional ocietie and improve reearch in engineering education, according to the newet director, Dr. Chri Pacual. The Bently Center welcomed Pacual during the 2009 Fall Quarter. It wa founded in 2003 by indutrialit Donald E. Bently and led by Dr. Jim Meagher until lat year. Currently, the Center endowment i valued at $6.5 million, and continue to grow. I am excited about thi profeional development opportunity, Pacual aid in a recent newletter. The Bently Center promote the teacher-cholar model, a central Cal Poly attribute, by providing releae time from teaching, o that faculty member can purue profeional growth, which, in turn enriche claroom teaching. Activitie and project undertaken via the Bently Center include: Rotor Dynamic Reearch, Coure Pack and Textbook Development, Cal Poly Cartilage Biomechanic Group, Monkey Robot Project, Rocket Nozzle Reearch, Vehicle Dynamic Model, Improving Engineering Education, and Automotive Air Cycle Machine and Wind Power Reearch. All of the project in the Center are equally important and unique, ay Pacual. The work performed on thee prototype may be the ubject of an ASME preentation in 2010, and may be conidered for patent protection by the univerity, Pacual aid. Sponored by a $10,000 grant from Parker Aeropace Group to build a Brinell Limit Teting Machine, the tudent deigned, contructed and validated through teting a machine that came in at a thrifty $5,292, including travel. Parker wa really involved in the proce and really pleaed with the reult, Jakulky aid. It wa great combining everything we ve learned and getting to deign with a mathmatical foundation a model that work and it doe indeed work. The fixture wa deigned to determine the load limit of new material ample at the onet of brinelling, which refer to a material urface failure caued by contact tre that exceed the material limit. (Dent or brinell mark are the reult of too great a load). The tudent Brinell machine wa teted by loading 1/2- inch metal ball and 1/4-inch roller between teel plate and comparing the load at which viual deformation wa detected to the load calculated. The tudent concluded: Once a quantitative definition of brinelling i accepted by Parker and more advanced equipment i available for meaurement of permanent deformation, thi machine will be able to determine the brinelling value of new material. n

Participant include UC Berkeley (lead intitution), Cal Poly, SUNY Buffalo, UC Davi and UC San Diego plu the Conortium of Univeritie for Reearch in Earthquake Engineering. The project addree the need to better undertand ground motion interaction between denely paced building by undertaking centrifuge experiment in which the input motion, ground condition, ground repone, and tructural repone are carefully tracked. Strider project aim to improve mobility for young SMA patient SPINAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY IS A RARE DISEASE THAT CAUSES a critical lo of mucle motor function for young patient. The overall goal of the Strider project i to provide Nathan, an energetic 4-yearold with SMA, with a device that will allow him to exercie, utain impact to promote bone denity growth and to move around in a vertical poition. Deigned for Nathan for age 4-6 and to upplement hi current mean of exercie that include water therapy, tretching, winging and vibration therapy, the 4-wheel, lightweight prototype paed tet for tability, handling, ability to travere multiple terrain, functionality and comfort. During the pat year, civil engineering major Jack Montgomery, Rohani Patel, and Clayton Proto each pent approximately two month living in Davi, where the centrifuge facility i located at the Center for Geotechnical Modeling. Needle to ay, completion of the experiment require effective teamwork and communication. One of the mot rewarding apect of the aignment wa working cloely with other tudent toward a common goal, aid Patel. Patel aignment actually began at UC San Diego, where he teamed with graduate tudent to apply nearly 200 train gauge to two mallcale tructural model. I remember learning about train gauge in my Mechanic of Material cla at Cal Poly, he aid. At the time, I didn t undertand them completely, but working with them at San Diego allowed me to better undertand their application. For the initial centrifuge reearch, Jack Montgomery applied hi tructural dynamic and earthquake engineering knowledge while teaming with a UC Davi graduate tudent to deign and tet a miniature voice coil ma vibrator. Thi device wa eventually ued to tudy the dynamic repone of model building teted on the centrifuge. Say Montgomery, I found the combination of tructural and geotechnical engineering to be the mot intereting apect of the project. The tructure, the foundation, and the oil mut all be analyzed when evaluating how neighboring building interact. Electrical Engineering n 70MHz Channel Emulator Project Phae II: The tudent project led by Dr. Al Liddicoat will work on the digital deign, computer interface, and ytem level verification for a Digital Link Channel Emulator (DLCE) ued to evaluate the end-to-end radio frequency communication ytem in ue for pace exploration. Smart Dial-a-Ride for Demand-Reponive Tranit Operation: Reearch and Development of a Prototype Dipatch Aitance Tool: Thi project led by Dr. Jeffrey Gerfen propoe to invetigate and develop the conceptual bai for an efficient ytem to aid Dial-a-Ride operation in everal area including: (a) taking ride reervation, (b) aigning ride to vehicle, (c) optimizing vehicle routing, and (d) automatically generating report which characterize ytem operation and riderhip. Multicultural Engineering Program n Support for MESA School Program: The MESA School Program (MSP) at Cal Poly receive funding from MESA, the College of Engineering, and corporate donor.
