5 10 TIPS Getting the Return on your Summer Conference Investment Your participation in MML s summer conference determines how successful and informative this event will be. The following suggestions will help you get the best return on the time and money you invest in conference attendance. 1 Review the schedule and decide which sessions you will attend. 2 Assign your municipality s officials to different workshops so that your city/town receives the benefit of hearing all of the speakers and learns from their expertise. 3 Take notes and pick up handouts. Share this information with other officials from your community. MML 2018 SUMMER CONFERENCE 4 Meet someone new. Introduce yourself to other attendees. Set a goal of talking with five officials you haven t met before, and exchange contact information so that you can keep in touch after the conference. 5 Visit the exhibits. The products and services on display may provide new and cost effective methods for providing municipal services. 6 Spend time talking with your peers at the Main Street displays. Ask questions about their municipality s operations. You may get ideas you can implement in your city/town. 7 Assign at least one person from your municipality to attend the Cabinet Secretaries Roundtable. This is an excellent opportunity for face time with key State officials and to learn about their agency s programs. 8 Attend the general sessions to hear Shannon Huffman Polson talk about leadership (June 11) and Matt Thornhill s presentation on the Municipalities of Tomorrow (June 12). 9 Make sure that your municipality is represented at the business meeting and casts a ballot for MML s Board of Directors. 10 Present a summary of what you learned during MML s summer conference at the council/commission meeting immediately following the conference. This will help citizens and the media understand how your participation at this training event benefits your municipality. 6 The Academy for Excellence in Local Governance is a voluntary training program designed to help local government officials, especially newly elected officials, meet the challenges of their roles. Municipal enrollees are required to successfully complete nine core and five electives to earn certification from the University of Maryland. The Academy is designed as a two-year program; however, participants may complete the requirements sooner than expected, or may use an additional third year to complete Workshops program requirements. Payment of a one-time $250 registration fee is required to participate in the Academy. Five core and six elective Academy topics are included among MML s 2018 summer conference workshop choices. The Academy extends elective credit to topics at the summer conference that meet Academy elective criteria. These electives are ever changing and are for all conference registrants, including those who are Academy graduates. New in 2018 a special class for Academy graduates Leadership in Economic Development: Creating Prosperity on Main Street. You must be a graduate of the Academy for Excellence in Local Governance to attend this session. Pre-registration and separate fee required. The Maryland Municipal League is a founding partner of the Academy. The program is administered by the University of Maryland s School of Public Policy. The Local Government Insurance Trust is the lead sponsor of the Academy.
