2 Risk Conference Management DetailsConference The MIABC s 5 th annual Risk Management Conference will be held at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel in Downtown Vancouver on April 11 th and 12 th. Register early as seating is limited. To register, complete the last page of this registration booklet and send it to the MIABC by , fax, or mail, or register online at miabc.org/registration. The deadline to receive registrations is Wednesday, March 30 th. The conference registration fee is $250 and includes all course material, coffee breaks, breakfast, lunch, and the welcome reception. For a limited time, an early bird price of $150 is available to members that register before Friday, February 5 th. Once the early bird deadline has passed, members can register groups of two or more delegates at a group rate of $200/person. As this conference is highly subsidized by the MIABC, these prices are available only for local government staff that are members of the MIABC. The conference registration fee for non-members is $600 which reflects the actual per person cost of the conference. For those who require overnight accommodation, the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel is offering a special rate of $ per night (plus taxes) for conference delegates, however space is limited and reservations must be made no later than March 10 th in order to secure the discounted rate. Delegates now have the option of charging the cost of accommodation at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel directly to the Risk Management Grant Program by selecting the option on the registration form. 1

A great session for those new to or unfamiliar with the MIABC. While the risk of lawsuits and liability can have a chilling effect on what programs and facilities local governments are willing to offer to their communities, this effect is directly contrary to the benefits and goals of recreational programs. In this session, Aron Bookman will discuss his recent case where the Court considered the circumstances in which local government would be liable for injuries sustained by children on the playground. David McKnight, Partner, Alexander Holburn Beaudin & Lang LLP Administration Stream Procurement Policies for Local Government Participants will hear about best practices that local governments should consider when procuring construction services for the development of local government infrastructure and capital assets. Through outlining real life examples, the participants will learn of the risks that local governments face in the procurement and construction process and the steps that they can take to manage and mitigate the risks. Lending or renting out local government facilities to independent groups helps to foster a sense of community but also increases a local government s liability exposure. MIABC Claims, Legal, & Member Services Staff LUNCH Extreme Weather: Developing Risk Resilience Climate change is hogwash you say? Data shows that a changing climate and increases in extreme weather events are a reality that should be embraced so that infrastructure systems are developed with risk resiliency to mitigate against future risk. Sonia and Adrienne will discuss the potential impacts and challenges that extreme weather effects may have on local governments, as well as the consequent liability and regulatory exposures faced by local governments. They will also share some strategies that organizations can be considering to manage those risks in the future.
