4 / 2013 A Message from the Mayor I am pleased to introduce this year s and Parks and Recreation Guide. As you will see there are many exciting opportunities to enjoy both indoor and outdoor across the Town of Caledon. Our Parks and Recreation Department is undergoing a major shift in how we deliver programs and services to the community. Our staff is working hard each day to develop and shape recreation programs that meet the community needs and are constantly working to improve their services to you. As you will see in this and Guide, we have put together a range of programs and I am sure you will discover a number of activities for you and your family to participate in. For example, residents can look forward to youth shinny hockey and family programs at the and new summer camps are being introduced in Caledon East, Caledon Village, Inglewood and Valleywood. Also new this summer, the Parks and Recreation Department is offering a free park playground program in Caledon East, Bolton, Cheltenham, Palgrave and Inglewood. In addition to the programs listed in the guide, be sure you watch for special programming being offered over the holidays and P.A. Days. I encourage you to take a close look at the new recreation programs being offered, our tried and true favourites and the outstanding natural features of our community. Caledon is a terrific, recreation-friendly community and I am confident you will find something in the Guide to entice you. New this spring registration opens at 7:00 a.m.! Registration will open at 7:00 a.m. at Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness, Caledon Community Complex and Mayfield Recreation Complex in person and by phone. Program Rates How to Register Program rates vary and are subject to change without notice. Resident rates are listed before tax and taxes will be applied at time of registration. The Parks and Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel or alter any classes, times, costs or locations outlined in this brochure without notice in the event of low enrolment or change of availability of facilities or instructor. Full refunds will be issued for course cancellations. Please ensure you keep your original program receipt for tax purposes, additional receipts may be provided at a cost of $ Non-residents will be charged an additional fee of $16.00 per program, per person. Non-resident fees for fitness memberships and facility rentals may vary. Age Requirements Children must be the minimum age required on the start date of the program. Age requirements are program specific and indicated throughout the guide. Holiday Program Cancellations There will be no registered programs scheduled on the following dates: Friday, March 29, 2013 (Good Friday), Sunday, March 31, 2013 (Easter Sunday), Monday, May 20, 2013 (Victoria Day), Monday, July 1, 2013 (Canada Day), Monday, August 5, 2013 (Civic Holiday), Monday, September 2, 2013 (Labour Day). Family Discount For families registering three or more children in the same session, the Parks and Recreation Department will apply a family discount to the least expensive program for the third and any subsequent child (children must be siblings). Discounts may not be available for all programs. Please inquire at the time of registration for family rates. Refund Policy Full refunds (less a $15.00 administration fee) will be issued upon request, up to but not including the course start date. On or after course start date, a pro-rated refund (less a $15.00 administration fee) will be issued upon request providing the program has not gone past the third scheduled class. If three or more classes have occurred, refunds will not be issued. If a course is cancelled, a full refund will be issued. Transfers may be permitted, up to but not including the third scheduled class, provided there is space. Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) A $36.00 fee applies to all NSF cheques. Payment for outstanding balances will be accepted by cash or credit card only. *Parks and Recreation Department - Town Hall opens at 8:30 a.m. Join us in celebrating the benefits and values of recreation and parks in everyday life. 6 How to Register It is easy to register Choose the course that is right for you. As of 7:00 a.m. March 5, 2013 visit any registration location to register for general programs, spring aquatics and summer camps. Volunteer in your community There are a number of ways that you can get involved in your community. If you are interested in volunteering with the Parks and Recreation Department please call x to learn more about the opportunities available or contact one of the many Caledon community organizations to discover more. Please refer to for a list of volunteer positions in your area. National Volunteer Week is April 22 26, 2013 and the Town of Caledon joins registered charities, not-for-profit organizations, sports groups and volunteer centres across Canada in thanking and recognizing our valued volunteers. Caledon Celebration for Volunteers and Citizen Achievement Awards will take place on Monday April 22, 2013 at the Caledon Community Complex. 8 Preschool Programs Through play-based learning in our structured programs, children will develop intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially in preparation for school. Crafty Capers Nursery Rhymes Opening circle, stories, songs, structured active play and a fun and easy craft to take home. Parent/ caregiver is an active participant in this interactive program. 9 Youth Programs The Town of Caledon offers many programs for children and youth. Your child will not only have fun and develop new friendships, but will also build confidence, self-esteem and develop creative skills. Activity Time for Participants with Special Needs The Youth Centre offers an array of activities. Participants will have an opportunity to engage in rock climbing, basketball, arts and crafts, physical activity and group games. The program ratio is one staff member to every two participants. With the assistance of our program staff participants will work together to film their production and take it home on a disc at the last class. For more information on how to join our team visit Badminton Skills and Drills This program is a great introduction to the sport of badminton, focusing on skill development in a noncompetitive environment. This progressive skills and drills program is designed to work with and cater to all skill levels by breaking down basic skills into smaller and easier steps. Age: years Fri 5:30 p.m. Apr 5 12 $ Bakers Dozen - Level 1 A great introduction to the world of baking with emphasis on kitchen safety and allergy awareness. Learn to make great baked goods with recipes you can take home. Cookies, cakes, cup cakes, recipe reading and much more. Age: 6-11 years Class Length: 90 Minutes Wed 6:15 p.m. Apr 10 5 $ Bakers Dozen - Level 2 This second level enhances skills learned in Level 1. Participants will bake their own desserts in small groups while following a recipe and learning different decorating techniques. This course has a focus on chocolate, cookies, cakes and decorating. Age: 8-12 years Class Length: 90 Minutes Thurs 6:15 p.m. Apr 11 5 $ Ball Hockey - Youth This course is a great introduction to the sport of ball hockey. The course focuses on skill development in a noncompetitive environment. Ball hockey skills and drills is a progressive based program designed to work with and cater to the skill level of all participants. From beginner to advanced this program has something for everyone. Basic skills will be broken down each week and practiced within game play at the end of each class. Age: years Mon 5:30 p.m. Apr 1 12 $ Ballet for Beginners This program teaches participants the basic fundamentals of ballet, balance, posture, ballet positions, methods of travel and much more. A presentation will be held for family and friends during the last class. Age: 6-8 years Sat 10:30 a.m. Apr 6 12 $ Basketball Skills and Drills This program is a great introduction to the sport of basketball, focusing on skill development in a noncompetitive environment. Age: years Tues 5:30 p.m. Apr 2 12 $ Rockwall Climbing is a fun, active sport for all ages. Try your hand at the gravity game! The 30-foot wall at Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness is open Tuesday and Thursday 5:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. $9.00 pay as you go or available with a Total Wellness membership (ages 6+). 10 Youth Programs Bootcamp Fitness - for Youth Stay fit, stay active! This introductory program welcomes youth to group fitness through circuits, group activities, cardio and more. Age: years Wed 5:30 p.m. Apr 2 12 $ DanSing DanSing is a program that combines singing and dancing. Participants will learn basic dance routines and sing along to various songs. Throughout this program participants will have the chance to sing in both large and small groups. Family and friends will be invited to the last class for a presentation. Age: years Fri 6:00 p.m. Apr 5 12 $ Decorate - My Space Bring your creativity and lets decorate together! Dependent on the program theme participants will create unique accessories and crafts. Age: 8-12 years Class Length: 2 Hours Wed 6:30 p.m. Apr 10 5 $ Energy Blasters Rise and shine to this great energizing program. A fun filled morning of energizing group games, activities and physical play. Age: 6-8 years Sat 10:30 a.m. Apr 6 12 $ Youth Activity Card Fitness Kids A recreational based fitness program full of fun and physical activity geared to improve endurance through cooperative games, obstacle courses, and running activities. Age: 5-7 years Tues 6:30 p.m. Apr 2 12 $ Fun Club for Participants with Special Needs Fun Club will give participants the opportunity to socialize and interact in a physically active environment which will be followed by time in the pool during a regular public swim. The program will be supervised by staff at a two to one ratio, this includes the public swim. Please note that staff can not assist in the changroom or washrooms. Register today for a Youth Activity Card for ages years old at Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness. This card will replace the need to show I.D. for drop-in programs and youth dances held at Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness. Here is how you register: Bring your parent or guardian to Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness along with I.D. that shows your photo and birthdate. Staff will take your photo and issue you a Youth Activity Card. Use your Youth Activity Card when attending all drop-in programs and youth dances. For further information please call Hip Hop Dance This program teaches participants the latest hip hop moves and grooves. Learn to listen to the music and count beats. Learn to add actions to 8 counts and put moves into a routine. This program also challenges memorization as each new move will be added together to create a routine. Family and friends will be invited to the last class for a presentation. Age: 8-14 years Tues 6:30 p.m. Apr 2 12 $ Thurs 7:00 p.m. Apr 4 12 $ Indoor Soccer Kicks Keep your soccer skills active even in the off season. This co-ed program is a mix of skills and drills with game play. This is a progressive based program where skills and drills are designed to enhance physical skills, increase fitness levels and encourage teamwork in a noncompetitive environment. 11 Introduction to Drama Theatre Introduction to Drama Theatre invites children into the theatrical world of arts. During this program participants will learn acting, improvisation, and movement. A presentation will be held for family and friends during the last class. Age: 9-14 years Class Length: 90 Minutes Fri 5:00 p.m. Apr 5 12 $ Introduction to Sewing NEW Learn the basics of sewing! Begin with the art of hand stitching and end with experience on the sewing machine. A variety of topics, such as bag making, repairs and alterations will be covered. All supplies required for the course are provided. Participants must bring their own sewing machine. Class Length: 3 Hours Mon 6:00 p.m. May 6 1 $ Jazz It Up Dance An introduction to basic jazz moves and techniques. Participants are asked to wear jazz shoes or ballet slippers and comfortable clothing. Age: 7-9 years Tues 5:30 p.m. Apr 2 12 $ Red Cross Babysitting Course Participants will learn how to provide care to younger children in a variety of age groups, and how to prevent and respond to emergencies. 100% attendance, skills demonstration, and minimum 75% on a written exam are required. Ride the rails, go full tilt and kick flip your way into some fun at the North Hill Skateboard Park, located at Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness or the portable Flipside unit at. Skateboard Lessons - Level 1 This course will teach new skateboarders proper balance, skating techniques, basic tricks and how to adjust and maintain your board. Participants will have the opportunity to try their new skills on small ramps near the end of the program. Helmets are mandatory, wrist guards and other protective gear is recommended. Age: 8-12 years Wed 6:30 p.m. Apr 3 12 $ Skateboard Lessons - Level 2 Skateboard Lessons Level 2 is a great continuation of Level 1 focusing on more advanced skills and techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to practice these skills on small ramps and rails. Helmets are mandatory, wrist guards and other protective gear is recommended. Age: 8-12 years Wed 7:30 p.m. Apr 3 12 $ Skateboard Lessons - Level 3 Advanced skateboarding lessons. Participants will have an opportunity to try their skills on our half pipe with the direction and supervision of instructors. Tae Kwon Do is an art of self defense that is designed to enable individuals to reach their personal potential. This course teaches blocks, kicks, and punches in an instructional environment. Uniform and testing fee is payable to the instructor. 16 Camps New for 2013, the Parks and Recreation Department will be offering summer camp opportunities town wide in a variety of locations. Our camps have been designed to provide your child with a fun, exciting and safe experience. Camp Registration Procedures Registrations for all summer camps are accepted in person or by phone at any of the following locations: Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness Mayfield Recreation Complex or Town Hall Parks and Recreation Department For year round program registration, please see page 5. Payment Options Cash, Cheque, Debit, Visa, Mastercard. Payment is due at the time of registration. Full payment is required if registration takes place less than two weeks prior to the start of the camp. Post-dated payment for the balance will be taken two weeks prior to the camp start date. Pre-authorized payments will be scheduled at the time of registration with Visa or Mastercard only. A non-refundable deposit of $50.00 per child, per camp will be accepted at the time of registration. Cancellation/Refund Policy The Town of Caledon Parks and Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel or alter any camps, times, costs or locations outlined in this publication without notice in the event of low enrollment or change in the availability of facilities or staff. A full refund, less a $15.00 withdrawal fee per participant, per session, will be issued if the request has been received more than two weeks before the camp start date. A full refund, less the $50.00 non-refundable deposit per participant, per session, will be issued if a request has been received less than two weeks before the camp start date. No refunds will be issued on or after the camp start date. If a camp is cancelled by the Town, a full refund will be issued. Family Rate For families registering three or more children in the same session, the Town of Caledon will apply a family discount of 20% to the least expensive program for the third and any subsequent child (children must be siblings). Discounts may not be available for all programs. Please inquire at the time of registration for family rates. Non-Resident Rate Non-residents will be charged an additional fee of $16.00 per program, per person. Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) There is a $36.00 charge for all cheques that are deemed NSF. If you are responsible for an NSF cheque, we will not accept cheques for any remaining payment(s). Code of Conduct Please inform us of any family or behavioural concerns. Our staff will make every effort to accommodate your child s needs, however we reserve the right to withdraw your child from the program should their behaviour cause harm to themselves, participants, staff or property. Age Requirements Children must be the minimum age required on the start date of the camp. Age requirements are camp specific and are indicated in the program description. What to Bring... Prior to camp, parents will be contacted by phone to outline the activities that will be happening during your child s week at camp. In order to make the most of your child s time at camp, it is important to send the appropriate items that will enhance your child s experience. 17 Inclusion Opportunities for Campers with Special Needs The Town of Caledon is committed to providing accessible and inclusive programs and services for all residents. Persons of all abilities are encouraged to take part in the many opportunities for participation offered by the Parks and Recreation Department. We recognize that some individuals require additional support(s) in order to successfully participate and we will work with children, families and adults to achieve their recreation goals. There are many ways that individuals with various abilities or specific support needs can take part in our programs. Based on the availability of staff, trained support workers can be provided to ensure the inclusion of every participant into our general recreation, aquatic and camp programs. For those with additional needs, we welcome the involvement of support workers provided by families or other agencies. Participants and families are invited to contact the Parks and Recreation Department to find out more about our inclusion services and to register for our programs. Our helpful, knowledgeable staff will assist families in identifying suitable programs and determining the level of additional support required on an individual basis. Spaces are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment. Our integration staff will work with you to finalize details that meet the needs of your camper. Volunteers The summer camp programs actively use volunteers to provide additional support to our camp staff. All interested volunteers must complete a volunteer application form and participate in mandatory training in order to be involved in the program. Volunteers must be the appropriate age based on activity. Remember, these hours can be used to complete the volunteer service required in highschool. 18 Camps Preschool Kinderdance Camp We welcome our youngest campers to share the camp experience in a fun, safe and social environment. This kinderdance inspired camp will have participants dancing every day for one hour. The instructional one hour class will introduce campers to the wonderful world of dance, music, movement, flexibility, coordination, balance and self-confidence. This camp includes one week of in-class work and a day trip. 25 Aquatics Program Swimming is not only great exercise and a lifetime activity, it builds endurance, muscle strength and relieves stress. It helps to develop self-confidence and has many social benefits. Pool Guidelines Swimming Attire Participants should wear a gender-appropriate bathing suit that is suitable for a public, family environment. Cut-offs and street wear are not permitted. Participants who are unable to wear a swimsuit may wear a clean t-shirt and shorts. Children who are not toilet trained must wear disposable swim diapers. Admission Standards Participants under the age of eight years must be accompanied in the water by a parent or care giver who is at least 16 years of age and is responsible for the direct supervision and must remain within arm s reach. There is a maximum of two children for each parent or guardian. Participants eight years and older may enter the pool without caregiver supervision. All participants between the ages of eight and ten will be required to participate in a facility swim test to determine their swim level. A colour-coded wristband will be issued upon completion indicating where they may swim. Those who pass the facility swim test may swim in the deep end, but those who cannot pass the facility swim test must remain in the shallow end. Facility Swim Test To successfully pass the facility swim test individuals must: Swim on their front 15 metres with the ability to put their face in the water and take at least one (1) breath without putting their feet on the bottom of the pool Tread water for one (1) minute The recreational swim admission standard applies to all recreational swims. Aquatics staff may ask for a demonstration of swimming ability if they feel there is a question of your child s safety. Photography at the Pools The privacy and comfort of our pool customers is important to us. Therefore the use of any device capable of rendering a photographic image is prohibited in our facilities. Please have your child tested to determine their appropriate level. Tests are conducted during the public swim times at Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness, Mayfield Recreation Complex and Caledon Central Pool. Contact the facility for helpful information and advice. Missed Lessons Unfortunately due to the large volume of swimming participants, we are unable to make up missed lessons. Learn to Swim Evaluations Approximately one week prior to the next registration, parents will receive a written evaluation of their child s progress. The class will end five minutes early which will give parents/caregivers the opportunity to speak with the instructors about their child s progress. This level is participation-based only, without formal evaluation. Sea Turtle (24-36 months) Orientation to water for toddlers and their parent/caregiver. Age is the only condition for entering this level. Swimmers learn, through fun games and songs, how to combine skills, how to kick with a buoyant object and how to perform basic floats, glides and kicks. This level is participation-based only, without formal evaluation. Sea Otter (3-6 years) Transitional level that transfers the preschooler to the care of the Instructor. All skills are assisted by the Instructor. Swimmers enter this level when they are 3 years of age. Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides, and swim 1 metre. They also learn age-appropriate water safety skills. Swimmers are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to Salamander once all criteria have been successfully completed. Salamander (3-6 years) Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Sea Otter. Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 2m further develop basic floats and increase their distance on front and back glide. Front swim and roll-over glide are also included, and swimmers learn appropriate water safety skills such as how to jump into chest-deep water and how to use a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Safety skills development includes water orientation, safe entries and exits and only swimming when an adult is present. 29 Learn to Swim Sunfish (3-6 years) Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Salamander. Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 5m, increase their distance using buoyant objects, increase their front and back glide with kick, and develop their roll-over glide, side glide and front swim. Safety skills include deep-water skills and use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Safety skills development such as water orientation, safe entries and exits and always asking for permission before going near the water. Swimmers are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to Crocodile once all criteria have been successfully completed. Crocodile (3-6 years) Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Sunfish. Through games and other fun activities, swimmers learn to swim 5m on their front and back, perform a dolphin kick and begin using rhythmic breathing. They also progress with kicking drills and increase their swimming distance to 10m. Safety skills include jumping into deep-water and performing surface support for 10 seconds, recognizing when a swimmer needs help and using a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) in deep water. Swimmers are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress to Whale once all criteria have been successfully completed. Whale (3-6 years) Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Crocodile. Through fun activities, swimmers perform a front and back swim for 10m. Swimmers work on developing their flutter kick and perform a distance swim of 15m. Safety skills include identifying safe swimming areas, jumping into deep water, swimming 5m, surface support for 20 seconds and return to safety, throwing assists and sitting dives. Swimmers are evaluated based on performance criteria and complete the program once all criteria have been achieved. Children 5 years or older are ready for the appropriate level of Red Cross Swim Kids. Red Cross Swim Kids Level 1 (6+ years) Swimmers develop front and back float, front and back glide, flutter kick (assisted), shallow water entries and exits, and swim 5 metres. Can be combined with Red Cross Swim Kids Level 2. Red Cross Swim Kids Level 2 (6+ years) Swimmers learn front and back glide with flutter kick, develop front swim, complete deep-water activities (assisted) and swim 10 metres continuously. Can be combined with Red Cross Swim Kids Level 1. Red Cross Swim Kids Level 4 (6+ years) Swimmers learn back swim with shoulder roll and front crawl (10m), work on flutter kick on back, perform kneeling dive, introduction to sculling and swim 25 metres continuously. Can be combined with Red Cross Swim Kids Level 3. Red Cross Swim Kids Level 5 (6+ years) Swimmers develop front crawl (15m), learn back crawl (15m) and whip kick on back, learn stride dive and treading water, perform head-first sculling on back, and swim 50 metres continuously. Red Cross Swim Kids Level 6 (6+ years) Swimmers increase their distance on front crawl and back crawl (25m), learn elementary backstroke (15m), learn dolphin kick, tread water in deep water, perform front dive, and swim 75 metres continuously. A combination of calisthenics, military-style drills and muscular conditioning exercises to provide an easy-to-follow yet challenging workout. Engage your major muscles and cardiovascular system into high gear! Cardio Core Blast Burn those calories and come to grip with that core. A choreographed low impact aerobic workout combined with standing and floor abdominal work. Light hand-weights may be incorporated. Finish on the mat for abs and a well deserved stretch. Forever Fit Series Forever Fit: This gentle low-impact workout will improve your balance, strengthen your heart and get you standing taller through postural work. A great choice for new participants! No mat work. Forever Fit+: A regular Forever Fit class with an extra challenge using medicine and stability balls. Forever Fit Fusion: Similar to Forever Fit, with the use of dynabands and stability balls. NO shoes required. Mat work is involved. 42 Parks and Trails Trails Caledon Trailway/Trans Canada Trail The Town of Caledon purchased a section of the abandoned railway in In 1994, the Town of Caledon began work to create a multi-use trailway that promotes the enjoyment and understanding of Caledon s unique cultural and natural features and now there are 35 km for you to discover! The trail bisects all major landscape features in Caledon: the Humber and Credit Rivers, the Oak Ridges Moraine and the Niagara Escarpment. Stationlands Park can be found in Caledon East (site of the Trans Canada Trail pavilion), Palgrave, Cheltenham and Inglewood. Caledon s Trans Canada Trail pavilion was the first of its kind in Canada, built in The park also features a pond and Caledon s Walk of Fame. On Our Trails: The Caledon Trailway can be used by pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians. Cyclists and equestrians must give pedestrians the right of way and access on the trail. All pets are to be on a leash. Stoop and scoop. Please help to keep our trails and pathways clean! Be courteous at all times and respect private property. Please ensure you remain on the marked trail unless you are using a designated side trail. Always signal before turning and stopping.
