1 BetaRho Crescent Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity Spring 2003 From the Adviser s Desk Time sure does seem to fly I think maybe age has something to do with that though! We have completed another Semester and are beginning a new one as I write this. Last semester went very well overall, and I am sure that other reports in this Crescent will detail much of that success. The new house is working out very well in my opinion, and it gets to looking better all the time. Both actives and alumni have done a lot of work on the house since we took it over July 1 st of last year. The entire alumni board and several other area alumni have contributed many hours of their time in making the improvements that have occurred. Hopefully many of you will be able to make it to Pink Rose this year, and you can see what has been accomplished and thank those who have been responsible for it. That includes L e a d e r s h i p C o n f e r e n c e both alumni and actives. We are fortunate to have some very talented and dedicated brothers when it comes to house maintenance. Overall our grades were pretty good, although I think the Chapter is capable of doing better than they did. We did get high fraternity grades, so that is always great. The actives did well overall, but the new members grades were very disappointing. The University does not want fraternities to offer bids to students before they have at least one semester of Northwest grades available. AGR negotiated a policy with IFC that we would be allowed to issue bids to first-time students and that if they did not attain a 2.25 they would be put on IFC probation. They then have one more semester to bring their Northwest cumulative up to 2.25 or they will automatically be expelled. We had 9 new initiates last fall and 5 of them are on IFC probation. I am not sure what our problem with the new members was, but we obviously have to do something to correct this situation. Two of the five were pretty close, but I think we might lose a couple automatically at the end of this semester. That will also impact the housing situation because this years freshmen would have moved into the house next fall. One of those five was suspended because he was on probation because of low ACT scores. In my opinion the Chapter needs to do a much better job of recruiting, and that cannot just be one individual. AGRs continue to be active on campus and hold the leadership positions in many of the agriculture student organizations. We are probably not as dominant in the overall student organization arena as we have been in the past, but we are well represented. On March 7-8 brothers of the Beta Rho Chapter attended the 2003 Leadership Conference in Indianapolis, IN. Brother Dick Blackburn went as adviser along with fifteen active members, which included the entire executive board. The conference was entitled, Men of Integrity, and was full of useful information for everyone to bring back to the chapter. One of the first sessions we went to was a breakout session. In this session we divided up and discussed our office with the same officers from other chapters. There were 18 other chapters at the conference that came for 14 different states. It was a great opportunity to meet other brothers from different chapters and to learn more about the fraternity, and what we can do to improve our chapter. Leadership Conference was not only a great way to get to know brothers from other chapters, but it was also a great way for all the brothers of Beta Rho to learn more about each other and build stronger brotherhood. There were sixteen members of the Beta Rho Chapter that attended the 2003 Leadership Conference in Indianapolis, IN Fraternally, Shannon Jesse #270

I was elected to the position of Noble Ruler in the spring semester of I am originally from Osceola, Nebraska and I am currently a Junior, Ag Science major. This year has been another busy year for the Beta Rho chapter. At the beginning of this school year we moved from the Show Me Inn to the Maryvilla, which was recently purchased by the alumni corporation. A lot of work has already been done to improve our new residence. Many of the active brother, along with several alumni, have put many hours into improving the main rooms and the exterior of the house. If you have not been by to see our new place we would encourage you to do so. We are now located at 1417 East Third Street, adjacent to MFA. We will Noble Ruler s Report be having two work weekends this summer for further house improvements. A postcard will be sent to all alumni in the near future with these two dates as well as the dates for all of the next year s happenings. We hope to see you here for all of these events. Fifteen members attended the National Leadership Conference held in Indianapolis, Indiana. The theme of this year s conference was Men of Integrity. Our weekend was filled with workshops and speakers. It was a valuable learning experience, and many ideas were brought back for the improvement of our chapter. We also managed to find our way downtown to discover what Indy nightlife was all about. Brother Rich Blackburn also attended the conference as our adviser, as Dr. Jewell had prior commitments. 3 From your Beta Rho Alumni Association President. It has been a pretty exciting as well as challenging year for the Beta Rho Alumni Association. This May will mark the end of the Alumni Association s first year owning the house and it has worked out better then anyone had planned. For all of you that haven t kept up this past year, I will give you a quick summary. A year ago in February the Beta Rho Alumni Association of Alpha Gamma Rho Inc, was formed. The summer of 2002 we purchased the property at 1417 East 3 rd street. Over the summer and the fall months the alumni board and the active chapter held a couple of work weekends improving and maintaining the property. This past Pink Rose at the alumni meeting we presented the financial Alumni Report statement and talked about improvements that were needed and a timeline for the improvements. We also set up three committees to get more alumni involved and improve the efficiency of the organization. The first and most important committee is the house committee. We have a good investment with the house and we want to take every step that we can to keep it up to date and improving it in any way we can. The Finance committee, this committee assists in fundraising and keeping the books for the alumni association as well and authorizing any funding for improvements, big or small. The alumni communication and relations committee will help with alumni contact information and working with the VNR of Alumni Relations on crescents, meetings, and newsletters. With these committees the alumni board feels that we can get more involvement out of the alumni and work with the active chapter to support them in any way we can. As you can see we have been pretty busy this past summer and hope that our hard work will encourage more alumni get active in the alumni association by volunteering at a work weekend with financial contributions. For more information on how to get involved contact myself or any one of the board members. Thanks to all who have worked hard to get us where we are today and continue the good work. Anthony Schreiner # 192 Homecoming 2002 The men of Beta Rho joined together with the women of Sigma Kappa this year for Homecoming. This was our float, which placed third. Crescent Publishing Service American Pride, Northwest Style was this year s homecoming theme. This year we had the privilege of doing homecoming float with the Sigma Kappa s. Many hours were put in and it paid off in the end as we received 3 rd place in the highly competitive division. Woodruff Arnold let us build the float in one of their sheds. Our skit was Bobby Goes to Broadway and we did it with the Delta Zeta s. We were in the highly competitive division and placed fourth. The Jalopy was a truck covered in camouflage, which did not place. We also did banner, costume clowns, and pomp clowns. Rayburn Snell came back and fired up his grill. Once again it was a great meal that everyone enjoyed. Many alumni came back and everyone had a good time at the new house. This issue of the Beta Rho Crescent was published through the Crescent Publishing Service (CPS). This is a special project of the AGR Home Office to assist chapters in improving communications with alumni. Chapters pay a small fee for the service, below the actual production cost, to encourage regular contact. This project is made possible by donations from alumni like you. Please consider contributing using the enclosed card. Brandon Schlake #274 Pink Rose 2003 The Beta Rho Chapter held their Pink Rose formal on February 8, 2003 at Country Kitchen in Maryville, Missouri. There were 29 alumni present along with their guest which made quite a crowd. A social hour started the evening off followed by a dinner which was provided by Country Kitchen and was followed by the dance. It appeared that everyone had a wonderful time throughout the night. Brother Scott Winkler put a lot of planning into the event and had the help of Brothers Jarrett DePriest and Chris Kauffman in getting the shirts and glassware in order. A great night was had by all who attended.

5 House Report George Lucas once said that dreams are extremely important. You can t do it unless you imagine it. For the Beta Rho Chapter that dream has become a reality with the purchase of a new fraternity house. The first semester living in the new house has gone fairly smooth. The major projects consisted of installing Internet, painting individual rooms and the meeting room floor, removing one wall, and improving the laundry room. The overall morale of the chapter is good especially with improvements being made everyday. Rent so far has been consistent with the old house at $250 a month for cable, Internet, trash, water, and electricity. Each room has its own restroom, phone, cable, and Internet hook-up. Everyone that lives here feels that the house has come around much better than expected. The chapter has added ceiling fans, a pool table, a soda machine, and a big screen TV to the living room and meeting area. All members are pleased to have ownership in a house and not a rental agreement. Unknown questions in regards to living in the house have now been answered as the house continues to improve and move forward. The college experience is different for everyone who lives it, with the purchase of a house the experience has improved for the members of the Beta Rho Chapter. The ark was built by amateurs and the Titanic by experts. I am glad to be sailing with dedicated and hardworking first time buyers. Fraternally, Rich Thomas This year the annual Green & Gold Classic preview show was held on March 1 st in Syracuse, Nebraska. The size of our show nearly doubled this year, as we had 188 entries. Exhibitors came to Syracuse from eight different states including: Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Our show seems to be gaining an excellent reputation throughout the Midwest with many of the exhibitors returning year to year. It takes a lot of hard work and effort by all of the 2003 Green and Gold Classic Founder s Day 2002 Founders Day was held December 6, We held Founders Day once again at the Elks Lodge in Maryville. Social hour started at 6:30 and the dinner started around 7:30. We had roast beef and ham for dinner and everyone seemed pleased with the meal. At the conclusion of dinner we moved back upstairs where we had our dance and social evening. We used the new stereo equipment purchased by the fraternity, and Brother Jason Richards was the D. J. for the evening. There were approximately alumni present, and we thank them for their support they have for the fraternity. Without them there would be no reason for Founders Day. Thanks again. Fraternally Yours, Brother Brian Orme Beta Rho men to put together a show of this caliber. We would especially like to thank the alumni who sponsored our show this year. The Sneak-A-Peek show was started in Syracuse again this year and followed our show on Sunday. This helped our show tremendously as we were able to split costs on many things such as advertising and show supplies. The two-day show configuration also helped to attract more exhibitors. Both shows will be held again next year on the 6 th and 7 th of March. Our show is now officially set for the first Saturday in March for the years to come. This is a great fundraiser and brotherhood event for the men of Beta Rho. We would like to invite the alumni to attend next year s show and look forward to seeing you there.
