1 Delta Crescent Winter 2000 Greetings Delta Chapter alumni. My name is Brad Farrer and I will be serving as Noble Ruler for the year Let give you a little background of myself. I am from a family farm in Royal Center, Ind., where we raise commercial livestock and am a junior majoring in ag econ. My dad, Steve, and my uncle are members of Alpha Gamma Rho as well. There are many goals I want to accomplish and some we are working on right now. One is the academic standing of our house. We have improved over last semester from 21st on campus to 10th for the fall semester of Our members worked hard but we know we can do better. We are currently making improvements to the house by painting hallways and putting new wallpaper up in the men's formal Noble Ruler s Report bathroom. We are also looking into putting in a new dining room floor and back door to the kitchen to improve the appearance of the house to visitors was a very good year for the Delta Chapter. We took home several awards from National Convention. Among those awards were, High Honor for our Membership Development and Recruitment programs, Gold Chapter award, Highest honor for Activities, and Honorable Mention in Chapter Activities. Special Congratulations goes to Mom Smith for winning the Outstanding Housemother of the Year, Joe Kelsay for winning the Alpha Gamma Rho Dairy grant and Matt Rhoads for winning the AGR Award of Excellence. We hope this year will be even more rewarding for Delta Chapter. This year's new group of officers are outstanding and I am looking forward to working with them in the next year to improve our Chapter. I am also looking forward to working with Delta Chapter's alumni as well. During my term as Noble Ruler I am reminded of what I was taught while growing up. That is, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I am confident I can do an outstanding job as Noble Ruler and I look forward to meeting many of you in the upcoming months at Founder's Day and Purdue basketball games. Go Boilers! Brad Farrer, Noble Ruler Scholarship The first semester of the school year has passed and we are now working on the second half of the year. Over all, Delta Chapter has improved in academic standings on campus among Fraternities. With a house average of 2.72 GPA, Delta Chapter is ranked 10th overall; a great achievement from 21st position last semester. The brothers of Delta Chapter are working hard to continue to improve overall academic standings and plan to set new and higher goals in the future. Steve Birky, VNR Scholarship

5 Winter 2000 Delta Crescent Page 3 Delta Chapter Adviser s Perspective As the year 2000 dawns, Delta Chapter is preparing for the new challenges of the twentyfirst century. The new advisors to Delta Chapter, Doug Morehouse and Neal Vines, bring new perspectives to these challenges while striving to uphold the best traditions of one of Alpha Gamma Rho's oldest chapters. A Delta alumnus and partner in the Brookston, Indiana family farm, Doug understands well the traditions of Delta Chapter. Doug also understands that undergraduates of today face different challenges and must compete in a marketplace that is different from only a few years ago. Neal, comes to Purdue from Beta Eta Chapter at Virginia Tech. As a member of Purdue's School of Agriculture staff, Neal sees the academic community issues facing the chapter and brings perhaps a different perspective on chapter activities. Delta Chapter will be focusing on several areas during the coming year including scholarship, the brotherhood program and issues relating to risk management. The agricultural job place of today is a highly competitive market whether seeking employment in private industry or returning to the family farm. Delta must not only encourage scholastic achievement, but promote achievement outside the classroom. As advisors, we strongly believe in the merits and goals of the Brotherhood program. As in the business world, good people tend to attract more good people. Not every prospective brother comes to Alpha Gamma Rho prepared to fully assume the responsibilities of a brother. It is the up to the chapter to help those individuals determine if Alpha Gamma Rho is right for them and if so, to help those young men grow into brothers, undergraduate alumni, and future leaders that AGR and Delta Chapter are so known for. Today's young men face a risk-laden environment that many of us "older" brothers are unaccustomed to. Liability, sexual harassment, and alcohol and drug awareness are but a few of the risk management areas that have been pushed to the forefront of today's Greek life. Dealing with these issues in a pre-emptive manner are high on the chapter's agenda. Finally, we must realize the challenges facing the undergraduates at Delta are not their sole responsibility. It is the responsibility of all AGRs particularly those alumni of Delta to help these younger brothers cope with these issues. The advisors welcome your counsel and help in realizing the goal: "To make better men." Neal Vines and Doug Moorehouse Join us for the 2000 Convention in Savannah, Georgia August 7-10 Call the Home Office for more detailsat

Members are able to ask the Home Office for a listing of alumni nationwide who work for a specific company or a specific industry in a region of the country. The list of industry breakdowns is shown in the Tell Us About Yourself section of this Crescent. It is hoped that by sharing this information, brothers can get suggestions on what kind of interns and classes to pursue as they prepare themselves for the real world. This information is provided free for sorts of under 160 names by the Home Office. The information provided is only as good as what you have shared with the Home Office. We ask that you complete the Tell Us About Yourself section so that you might help a fellow brother in his employment search.
7 Winter 2000 Delta Crescent Page 4 House Mom report Thanks to all of you for the cards, flowers, phone calls and prayers during Susan's last illness and death. And I would like to send a special thanks to those of you that made the long trip to Kansas for her funeral. The men here at the house gave me all of the time off I needed and it was certainly appreciated. Second semester is starting out very busy. Everyone is looking forward to Pink Rose, the Leadership Seminar in Reno, Founders Day, Rush Weekends, Mom's Weekend, Grand Prix, and Graduation. This year s AGR National Convention will be held in Savannah, Georgia in August. It would be a great experience to see a lot of Delta Chapter alums in attendance. Savannah is a wonderful place to enjoy Georgia's great, southern hospitality and also to meet many other Alpha Gamma Rho brothers from across the nation. So, be sure to plan your vacation around this year's National AGR Convention. Until next time, Mom Smith We write our own destiny. We become what we do. Madame Chaing Kai-Shek CRESCENT PUBLISHING SERVICE This issue of the Delta Crescent was published through the Crescent Publishing Service (CPS). This is a special project of the AGR Home Office to assist chapters in improving communications with alumni. Chapters pay a small fee for the service, below the actual production cost, to encourage regular contact. This project is made possible by donations from alumni like you. Please consider contributing using the enclosed card. Membership Development The Delta Chapter has gone through great changes over the past year. The passing of the chapter Covenant will raise the level of brotherhood to a new heights. The Covenant has installed many new programs that will benefit the undergraduate chapter as well as the alumni who participate. One of the programs is the review session which will allow the undergraduate chapter to go through an interview with an alumnus. This interview will build good skills when the brothers are applying for jobs or organizations on campus. The second part of the review session is a brotherhood evaluation. The alumnus will rate the brother on his overall performance in many categories. This will serve as a measuring stick for the undergraduate chapter through the upcoming year. The second program is a mentoring program that will go into effect next fall with the new members and any undergraduates who wish to participate. This will allow the undergraduates a chance to shadow an alumnus on the job and talk about any concerns they may have going through school. The two will be paired up throughout the four years, so this is a great opportunity to build a strong bond with an undergraduate brother. If you are interested in participating in any of these activities or if you have any suggestions please contact Andy Canada at (765) ext 619 or by at acanada2@yahoo.com or John Nidlinger at jnidlin1@purdue.edu. The spring review session will be held on campus from 12:00-4:00, April 2. Andy Canada & John Nidlinger VNR Membership Development Deceased Alumni Phillip A.
