1 Introduction/Background Since 1959, the Princess Program has played an integral role in the work of the 500 Festival. Over the past 54 years, more than 1,700 women from throughout Indiana have experienced the honor of being selected as a 500 Festival Princess. Fifty four of those young women have served as the 500 Festival Queen. The 500 Festival Princess Program is a great part of the legacy of the Indianapolis 500. Each year, we select a distinctively large field of Princesses. Because there are 33 drivers in the 500 Mile Race and 33 members on our Board of Directors, we have 33 Princesses. Our large ambassador program allows for an impressive amount of community outreach and brings Indiana and the 500 Festival distinction and tradition. As ambassadors of the 500 Festival and the city of Indianapolis, Princesses: Serve by attending and actively participating in all events, social functions, and volunteer activities of the Festival. Learn and grow by taking advantage of the opportunities for personal development, volunteerism, and community service. Represent the 500 Festival by actively supporting its mission, values, and goals. Have fun and make new friends, contributing to a sense of community which is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable aspects of participation in the Princess Program. Description/Purpose As ambassadors of the 500 Festival, the 2013 Indianapolis 500 and their hometowns, the 500 Festival Princesses attended and volunteered at 500 Festival events and programs throughout the month of May. In addition, the 33 princesses were involved with statewide outreach programs of their choosing. Princesses were also present at various Indianapolis Motor Speedway functions and participated in the Indianapolis 500 Victory Circle celebration. Our 33 ambassadors serve as excellent and positive promotional icons for the 500 Festival and the 500 Mile Race. For example, Princesses will volunteer their time to help out with the 500 Festival & Indianapolis 500 Education Program, 11 different field trips to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that are offered for Indiana schools for free through the 500 Festival. It s great to see how much young children look up to the Princesses. Some will even let youngsters wear their tiara and sash to get a picture! In

2 this regard, the Princesses are also helping to grow the next generation of race fans and keeping the significant motor sports tradition in Indiana alive. At the outreach appearances, the Princess cover the following topics: What is the 500 Festival? What s new and exciting at the 500 Festival; the 2013 theme Turbocharging Indy 500 Festival and Indianapolis 500 Calendar of Events What you re looking forward to as a 500 Festival Princess 500 Festival event ticket information; how they can participate (many events are free) How to become a 500 Festival volunteer Q&A with the audience Allison Jacob was selected as the Festival Queen and received a $2,500 scholarship. The role of the 500 Festival Queen is to serve as an ambassador, spokeswoman and role model on behalf of the 500 Festival. It is the responsibility of the Queen to become the team leader for the other 32 Princesses and provide a unified positive attitude and enthusiastic outlook on the 500 Festival, the Princess Program and participation in 500 Festival events. Target Audience/Number of Participants This year s 500 Festival princesses represented 9 Indiana colleges and universities and 24 cities and towns across the state. The young women were selected from more than 200 applicants based on communication skills, poise, academic performance and community and volunteer involvement. To be eligible for the 500 Festival Princess Program, applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 23, single and legal residents of Indiana. Candidates must also be fulltime undergraduate students in a fully-accredited Indiana college or university and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. Applications to become a 500 Festival Princess are accepted until early January. The first- and second-round interviews take place in late January/early February, and the 33 Princesses are selected by mid-february. They participate in events up through the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race over Memorial Day weekend. 3 Impact program has had on the community Princesses serve as ambassadors of the 500 Festival, the 2013 Indianapolis 500 and their hometowns. Princesses attend 500 Festival events and volunteer programs throughout the month of May and the entire year, in addition to involvement in statewide outreach programs of their choosing. Community outreach programs that 500 Festival Princesses attended this year include: Indiana Pacers basketball games, Indianapolis Indians baseball games, visits to libraries, senior centers, elementary schools and churches across the state of Indiana and participation in other parades including the St. Patrick s Day Parade in Indianapolis and the America Senior Village Parade in Speedway, Ind. Description of Sponsors Sponsors for the 500 Festival Princess Program include G.Thrapp Jewelers, WTHR Channel 13 and The Sanctuary on Penn (official caterer). Apparel and accessory providers include Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Vera Bradley. Overall effectiveness/success of the program Each of the Festival Princesses are required to make four statewide appearances at her hometown and/or her college hometown. The remaining appearances are up to the Princesses initiative. Examples of appearances could include local elementary schools, Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs, parade, churches, etc. The 2013 Princesses made more than 275 outreaches across the state of Indiana. See Supporting Materials for full list. The 500 Festival Princess Program is one of the longest-standing programs in our organization. Since 1959, the Festival has chosen 33 young women to serve as ambassadors for the 500 Festival and the Indianapolis 500. We believe a testament to the success of this program is the number of past Princesses who still keep in touch and share great memories that have followed them through the years. Many point to the opportunity to reach out to the community as a fulfilling experience

4 Selection Process: How are the 33 Princesses selected? Selection is based on personal projection, motivation and commitment. The 33 women chosen to represent the 500 Festival should possess the following characteristics: Exceptional poise and appearance Strong desire to serve others through community service Volunteerism Maturity and responsibility Academic achievement Team Player the ability to work well with others Hard Worker Patience and flexibility Great sense of humor High energy level Unselfish giving of herself to others A panel of independent judges interviewed all candidates on January 26, Then 66 candidates proceeded to a second round of interviews on February 9, The final 33 Princesses were selected on that day. All candidates were notified by the night of Feb. 9, 2012, if they were selected to serve as one of the Festival Princesses.

5 Supporting Question What did you do to update/change this program from the year before? Were your updates/changes successful? Please provide measurable results and examples. In 2013, we targeted our media outreach to each princess s hometown and school, in addition to sending general updates to statewide media. This lead to a higher number of community papers picking up on our messaging, as well as profiling the princesses in in-depth feature stories. Additionally, we increased the number of mandatory outreaches for each Princess from two to four. This allowed more opportunities for the Princess Ambassadors to serve both their hometown and college community by talking about the events of the 500 Festival. Also, we continued to work with engaging the Princess Alumnae as a source of fundraising support for the current Princesses and utilize their networks to raise valuable dollars geared directly to the Princess Program and the 500 Festival Foundation. We established a Princess Alumnae Committee to serve as the governing board for the Alumnae program. We also tapped into Princess Alumnae contacts for more visible outreaches for the Princess. Every year the 500 Festival graduates an additional 33 smart, talented and educated women into its Princess Alumnae program. We continue to provide a network for these ladies to keep in contact and stay up-to-date with 500 Festival events and programs. Lastly, we paired each of our 33 princesses with one of our 33 board members. This allows our princesses the opportunity to network with professionals in the community and allows our board members to serve as mentors to these college-aged women.

17 Quotes from Princesses: When I was chosen as a 500 Festival princess I was unsure of what was in store for me but as the month of May began I quickly realized my expectations would be more than met. This experience is one that I will truly never forget and I am forever grateful for every single person that made this dream a reality. The various 500 festival events and charity work we did as a princess group has made me grow as a young woman. My greatest memory was visiting Riley Children's Hospital and interacting with all the kids, this was such a humbling experience for me and one that made me realize just how lucky I am to have good health. I brightened the children's day just by attending the event but what they didn't realize is they completely changed my view of life, this whole program has. I now have the confidence and courage to put myself out there and take chances whether that be with future relationships or careers. I have a strong passion for volunteering and helping people that are less fortunate than I am. I appreciate all that this program has given me and will continue to encourage every college girl to take a leap of faith and try-out for this program because I know they will NOT regret it. -Taylor Blackburn, sophomore at Indiana University My experience with the Festival Princess Program was everything that I could have imagined it would be multiplied by 100. I knew it would be once-in-a lifetime experience and I would get to meet new people, but I could never have guessed the impact those experiences and people would make on my life. Yes, race weekend was wonderful alongside my fellow Princesses, but it was the months leading up to the race that I treasure. Not only did I get to watch as 32 of the greatest women I know went out into their communities to make a difference, I got to work alongside them in doing so, all in the hopes that by leading by example, we could inspire others to do the same. There are some people, myself included, that want to make a difference in the world but aren t sure where to begin. Whether you are a princess, a family member, friend, or volunteer, everyone involved with the 500 Festival Princess Program is given opportunities and confidence to do just that. I am so incredibly grateful to the 500 Festival Princess Program for the lessons I ve learned, the memories I ve made, and the courage to go out into the world and make it extraordinary. -Becca Duggan, junior at Purdue University I know there are words, but it s finding that single word to describe my experience as a 500 Festival Princess that becomes nearly impossible. Not only was my time as a princess humbling, but it was inspirational. Being surrounded by 32 fabulous young women gives oneself more strength and power than ever imagined. Of course, meeting the Indy car drivers and all kinds of famous people is awesome, but it s looking around at 32 women with you and realizing that you have become a family. There are no pictures I can show, or stories I can tell to really show my gratitude and love for the Princess Program. It s something that s ignited inside every princess once she gets that anticipated saying, CONGRATULATIONS! YOU RE A PRINCESS. But the passion doesn t stop there, it continues to grow as you ll randomly meet former princesses and know they too share a special bond with you. The love grows even more as you spot a young girl from across the room looking at you, and just by smiling at her you

I have grown into a mature young woman through my journey as an ambassador for the 500 Festival. The program brings the best out in each and every collegiate woman. We get to go out in the community together and give back to a city we call home, while forming close nit friendships with girls from all different backgrounds, colleges, and cities in Indiana. With that said, the best part of the 500 Festival Princess Program was being able to give back to a community that has given so much to me. Being able to put smiles on little kids faces, volunteering in my community, and making lifelong friends with 32 other talented young women has been the most rewarding part of my time as a princess. One of the main reasons I applied for the scholarship program was that in high school I was a three sport athlete and did not have the opportunity to give back to my community as much as I would have liked to. With being a college student and no longer an athlete, the Princess Program was the perfect opportunity to give back to my community as much as possible, while educating my community on the Indianapolis 500 and an organization that provides so many activities for our community! After doing my outreaches in the community and seeing what kind of impact I made on students, and patients at nursing homes and hospitals I want to continue to give back to my community the rest of my life. -Allison Jacob ( Festival Queen), junior at Ball State University February 9th, 2013: The day I found out I was blessed to be named an 500 Festival princess. What I didn't realize was that my life would be changed throughout the next few months impacting others through various outreaches, learning more about the Indy 500, and most importantly meeting the other 32 festival princesses. From speaking to classrooms, youth groups, and community leaders, to hosting events at Riley's Children Hospital Race Day, Flashes of Hope, and the Indianapolis Zoo's Zoopolis, the exposure to the city of Indianapolis, Indy 500 and the 500 Festival Program was truly life changing. I walked out of each outreach knowing I had impacted others, but could never believe the impact others had on me and my life as I became a more thankful, touched, and well rounded person. There is an endless list of opportunities that are available through this program. Throughout the month of May I had the experience of a lifetime meeting 32 of the most exceptional young ladies in the state of Indiana that I can't wait to watch take the world by storm.
