1 Cooperative Extension Service Kenton County Marshall Road Covington, KY (859) Fax: (859) MAINS/VAUGHN FAMILY RECEIVES LLOYD BRIDGES AWARD Larry Mains has been actively involved with 4-H and the Extension Office for more than 10 years. During that time, he has served among other things as a Teen Adviser, a judge for speech competition and as a judge for projects at the Kenton County Fair. Larry helps to maintain the extension office grounds by tilling the garden and repairing the ham house and doing basically anything else that is asked of him. Larry currently serves as a member of the Extension District Board and a director for Kenton County Fair. Usually not far from Larry, you will find his grandson Will Vaughn, who assists him in helping to maintain the grounds. Will and his sister Ellie have been involved in 4-H as teen leaders, volunteers at the Fair and at the speech competition. Larry s daughter Debbie and her husband Chuck have become involved with 4-H through assisting and judging speech competition and providing training to participants for the country ham speeches. Larry and the rest of the family believe that being involved in 4-H has been very exciting and fun and provided them all the opportunity to learn, grow and serve together. The Mains and the Vaughns wish to thank 4-H for the honor of receiving the Lloyd Bridges 4-H Family Award and look forward to many more years of involvement. F RIEND OF 4-H AWARD This year at the Kenton County 4 H Recogni on Banquet, the 2016 Friend of 4 H Award was awarded to Ms. Trevia Cooke and the Big Cats 4 H Club Volunteers for their many years of service and support. The 4 H Big Cats is a Community Club and Trevia has been their Club Leader for 25 years. Early Deadline: Deadline for the December newsletter is November 14. Please get all articles in by 4:30 on November 14. Thank You!

5 4-H Youth Development Page 5 SHOOTING SPORTS MEETING November 8, :00 p.m. Kenton County Extension Marshall Road For more information call Denise Donahue at (859) H AGE POLICY Determined by age of youth on January 1 A young person in Kentucky may join 4-H at the age of nine and continue his/her participation up through age 18. The age of a young person is determined by the age he/she is on January 1 of the program year. In 2006, this general policy was revisited and a clarification was put in place, particularly for the upper end of the age range. It becomes especially important when issues of fairness regarding competition are in question. Our ultimate goal is to offer the 4-H experience to as many Kentucky youth as possible. Program Year: As of September 1, 2006, the 4-H Program Year in Kentucky is September 1 through August 31. The 4-H Program Year is twelve months in duration. Upper end of age range: Kentucky 4-H Age is the young person s age on January 1 of the current program year. On January 1 of the current program year, a youth must be 18 years old or younger to participate in 4-H during that 4-H Program Year. When a youth is 19 years of age on or before January 1 of the current 4-H Program Year, that youth has completed his/her 4-H eligibility and may not participate in 4-H during the current 4-H Program Year. For the Program year, if a young person's date of birth is... Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 2007, his/her 4-H age is 9 Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 2006, his/her 4-H age is 10 Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 2005, his/her 4-H age is 11 Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 2004, his/her 4-H age is 12 Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 2003, his/her 4-H age is 13 Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 2002, his/her 4-H age is 14 Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 2001, his/her 4-H age is 15 Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 2000, his/her 4-H age is 16 Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 1999, his/her 4-H age is 17 Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 1998, his/her 4-H age is 18 Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 1997, his/her 4-H age is 19 and is no longer a 4-H member 4-H ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM DUE NOVEMBER 18 Cumulative program spanning the entire career of the 4-H er. Awards points for outside efforts and interests. Encourages growth and development by awarding high points at multi-county, state, and national levels. Does not require a previous level of achievement to apply for a higher level as long as the 4-H er meets the minimum point requirements. 4-H ers can choose to compete for awards and prizes (ie Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Emerald) OR simply achieve levels and be recognized in their counties. Youth who have obtained a Bronze, Silver, or Gold retain their title. The Achievement Program includes and incorporates the previous Middle School Leadership Awards. Previous work completed by the 4-H er (from past years) may be included in the new Achievement Program. The program is designed to allow 4-H ers to begin keeping records of their awards, participation, and projects. The county deadline for submitting your application is November 18. For further information or an application, contact Denise Donahue at H CROSS COUNTY LINES POLICY Kenton County 4-H Council will address cross county lines concerns for the program year during their regular November 21 meeting. All requests to exit or enter a program must be received in writing and turned in to Diane Kelley, at the Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. on 11/21/16. As a general rule, a young person becomes a 4-H member within the county where he/she is a resident or attends school. Participation close to home usually allows the young person and his/her family to become more fully engaged in 4-H and more actively involved in the greater community. Generally, where a young person participates in 4-H becomes an issue when competition is involved; where a young person is a member becomes important to fair and ethical competition. It is assumed that a young person is a member of 4-H in the county of residence or county where the young person attends school. To compete as part of any other county s 4-H program, a transfer of membership must be clearly established through a request by the member, approval by the agents and councils involved, and appropriate documentation. Determination of whether a young person may cross a county line is to be completed on a case by case basis by the agents and councils involved.

7 Teens and Money Social Networking Assistance Did you know that a Kentucky Extension specialist hosts a blog on finances and consumerism directed at teens? That s right. Allowanceless: What do You Mean I Don t Get an Allowance Anymore? was started for 4 big reasons 1) To get the skinny on up-to-date, legit consumer and financial information through blog posts; 2) To open up the comments section to TEEN opinions; 3) To give teens the chance to be hands-on and active with the information we write about; and 4) To help teens educate themselves and take better control of their finances. The blog is available at Volunteer Needed One 4-H representative is needed to attend the District 3 Forum on Friday, November 11 th, at the Henry County Extension Office from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Find out what is going on at the University and bring the information back to the county.
