1 TOWN OF LOCKPORT 2018 SPRING EDITION Modern Minutemen Sometimes we all get tied up in a busy world and forget to slow down and appreciate the people around us. Today I m slowing down, and taking time to thank our unsung heroes, the volunteer firefighters of Lockport. Just like the original Minutemen of the Revolutionary War, local men and women are ready at a moment s notice to come to the aid of their neighbors. Every year these professionally trained fire fighters save the Town of Lockport residents a substantial amount of money by operating Volunteer Fire Departments. Please consider checking with your local Fire Company to see if you, or your sons or daughters might become part of the volunteer firefighter profession. The Town of Lockport and State of New York offer retirement, life insurance, and educational benefits. So, when you see your local unsung heroes, please shake their hand and thank them for their dedicated service and a job well done It s hard to believe it s 2018, but like they say; Time and tide wait for no man. With all the talk about our Country s immigration, I started researching our own Town history. In a few short years we will be celebrating our 200th anniversary. The Town of Lockport was incorporated February 2, 1824, when it was split from the Town of Cambria and Royalton. Early settlers came from many countries such as England, Scotland, Germany, Ireland and Italy, often following Indian trails. Many of these became roads in the 1800's and were frequently named for the people residing there. The history of the Town of Lockport changed radically when this area was chosen as the place where the Erie Barge Canal would ascend the escarpment. Today, it is the fastest growing town in upstate New York. Lockport is a town which has planned for, and channeled its growth productively. Today, Lockport is a friendly community with rich, historic roots. We seek to blend the old with the new to preserve the past as well as move ahead with the changing times. Sincerely, Mark Crocker Lockport Supervisor HUMAN INTEREST The golden ball on the Day Rd Park flag pole fell off. As part of a training exercise South Lockport Fire Company re-installed the golden ball. The Town of Lockport thanks them and appreciates that effort! Supervisor Mark Crocker
