1 Engineering by the Numbers By Michael T. Gibbons Engineering bachelor s degrees recovered in 28 from a slight dip in 27, reaching 74,17 for a 1.2 percent gain. Excluding computer science, the 68,26 engineering bachelor s degrees awarded marked the highest total since Enrollment grew by 4.5 percent this year to 43,191 full-time undergraduates. That is almost 1 percent more than we saw just three years ago. Enrollment increased for each discipline this year, except for architectural engineering. Some of the larger fields computer science, electrical/computer engineering, and mechanical engineering showed below average growth. Much of the enrollment increase was fueled by the 1 percent growth in both chemical and biomedical engineering. Master s degrees recovered nicely from the past two years decline, posting a 5.4 percent increase in 28. The 38,986 degrees conferred were almost an exact match of the total for 26. Enrollment trends point toward higher degree production over the next couple of years. Master s enrollment hit an all-time high this year, with almost 93, students. That s 12.3 percent greater than the fall 25 class. Since that time, engineering management has led the way with a 24 percent enrollment increase. Although they are small fields, nuclear and petroleum engineering have gained 26.5 and 38.8 percent, respectively. The largest loss was in chemical engineering, which fell by over 7 percent during this 3-year period. Doctoral degrees remained virtually unchanged from 27 after a 54 percent rise over the preceding four years. While the 9,86 degrees awarded in 28 were a record, the 1.4 percent annual enrollment growth over the last three years means that degree output should remain at this level for the near term. Degree production increased markedly across all disciplines over the last five years. Yet some fields have fared better than others during the recent three-year enrollment plateau. Biomedical, materials, mechanical, and metallurgical engineering outperformed most fields in terms of percentage or raw growth. Electrical/computer engineering and computer science enrollment have been flat since 25. Several fields, such as aerospace, engineering science, industrial, and manufacturing engineering, declined by 5 percent. The share of doctoral degrees awarded to foreign nationals declined significantly for the first time in nine years. Having risen from 45.6 percent in 1999 to 61.6 percent in 27, this year s 58.3 percentage marks a clear change. At the master s level, degrees to foreign nationals reached 41.7 percent. This is a 3 percent increase from last year s mark, which was a 1-year low. The percentage of bachelor s degrees awarded to women ticked lower, to 18 percent, which is a tenth of a percent below 27. Women increased their undergraduate enrollment share slightly, to 17.9 percent. This rate stood at 17.5 percent for the previous two years. Representation at the graduate level is much stronger: women account for 23 percent of master s graduates and 21.1 percent of doctoral graduates in engineering. Both are at or near all-time highs. The representation of African-American and Hispanic students fluctuates from year to year but remains generally low. Combined, these groups accounted for only 11.1 percent of bachelor s degrees, 1.2 percent of master s degrees and 6.8 percent of doctoral degrees awarded in This is far below their combined 28 percent share of the general population. Asian-Americans, who represent 4.5 percent of the U.S. population, received 13 percent of bachelor s, 15.4 percent of master s, and 12.4 percent of doctoral degrees. The faculty ranks are gradually diversifying. Yearly increases in the percentage of women have pushed their representation from 8.9 percent in 21 to 12.3 percent in 28. African- American and Hispanic faculty members are slightly more prevalent than in 21, with each rising a half of one percent during this period, to 2.5 percent and 3.5 percent, respectively. Asian-Americans now comprise 22.7 percent of tenured/tenuretrack faculty members. That s up significantly from 17 percent in 21.
