1 Engineering by the Numbers By Brian L. Yoder, Ph.D. A Note on Data in the 216 Profiles: In a change from previous issues of Profiles, ASEE has decided to omit data from schools that have not participated in our survey for more than two years. In the past, we carried forward data from prior years for non-participating schools so as to maintain a consistent benchmark. As a result of our tightened inclusion requirements, tabulations in this issue of Profiles exclude data from 5 colleges. This difference accounts for totals that are noticeably lower than in the 215 Profiles: 13, fewer undergraduate engineering students, awards of 2, fewer bachelor s degrees, and a decrease in master s-level enrollment. Schools excluded from tabulations were mostly smaller institutions, many with undergraduate engineering programs only. Despite the lower totals, which reflect current data from participating schools, ASEE s survey results show substantial growth in engineering schools over the past 1 years. Recent enrollment numbers, however, suggest that engineering may be now entering a period of slower growth. Bachelor s Degrees and Enrollment The number of students awarded bachelor s degrees in engineering rose by 6 percent from 215 to 216, slightly above the average 5.4 percent annual increase in bachelor s degrees in engineering since 27. Engineering Science and Engineering Physics, and Computer Science (inside Engineering) had the largest percentage increases in 216 over the previous year: 24 percent and 23 percent, respectively. Electrical/Computer Engineering and Mining Engineering had the largest percentage decline from 215 to 216, a decrease of 17 percent and a decrease of 8 percent, respectively. Enrollment trends indicate that the number of bachelor s degrees may not continue to grow at its recent pace. Growth in undergraduate engineering enrollment is slowing after more than a decade of strong annual increases. Our benchmark in 216 shows a decrease from 215 of 1,26 full-time and part-time students enrolled in an undergraduate engineering program. That number takes into account the exclusion of non-participating schools, which resulted in 13, fewer enrolled engineering students. If the excluded schools data from previous years had been included in the latest totals, our benchmark would show a slight increase in 216 over 215, but a lower rate of growth than the annual average for the past 1 years. Based on this year s benchmark, undergraduate engineering enrollment has grown by 57 percent since 27, an average increase of 5.7 percent per year. Civil Engineering/ Environmental Engineering and Computer Science (inside Engineering) had the largest percentage increase in 216 over the previous year, with both showing an 11 percent gain. Petroleum Engineering and Mining Engineering had the largest percentage drop in enrollment, showing a decrease of 22 percent and 23 percent, respectively. Master s Degrees and Enrollment Master s degrees awarded in 216 increased by 9 percent over 215, reflecting a higher growth rate than the 6.9 percent average annual increase in degrees awarded since 27. Engineering disciplines with the largest percentage increase in degrees awarded included Civil/Environmental Engineering, which granted 24 percent more degrees in 216 than in 215, and Computer Science (inside Engineering) which granted 2 percent more degrees in 216 over the previous year. As with bachelor s degrees, the trend of strong growth in master s degrees is unlikely to continue in coming years. Enrollment in engineering master s degree programs decreased by 3 percent from 215 to 216 to 127,159. Enrollment in master s degree programs has increased by 42 percent since 27, or 4.2 percent per year, on average. Doctoral Degrees and Enrollment Engineering doctoral degrees decreased slightly from 215 to 216 less than 1 percent breaking a trend that saw the award of doctorates increase by an average of 2.9 percent a year over the previous decade. The engineering disciplines with the largest percentage drop in doctoral degrees included Petroleum Engineering, which fell 18 percent, and Electrical/ Computer Engineering, which declined by 1 percent. Enrollment in doctoral programs flattened, increasing by 1 percent from 215 to 216, following a 31 percent growth 27, or an average 3.1 percent per year. Civil/Environmental Engineering and Engineering (General) showed the largest percentage increases in doctoral enrollment of 3 percent and 19 percent, respectively, from 215 to 216. Engineering Students from Other Countries Engineering degrees earned by students from outside the United States increased from 215 to 216. The proportion of bachelor s degrees earned by non-resident aliens increased from 9.1 percent to 9.6 percent, reaching a new high mark for this cohort. After dropping in 28 and 29 to a low of 6. percent, the proportion of bachelor s degrees awarded to non-resident aliens has increased every year since. The proportion of master s degrees awarded to non-resident aliens increased by more than 11 percent, from 47. percent in 215

2 By the Numbers to 58.1 percent in 216. Since 27, when non-resident aliens accounted for 38.7 of master s degrees, their representation has increased nearly 2 percent. Students from outside the United States accounted for 54.8 percent of doctoral degrees awarded in 216, maintaining a rate that has been consistent since 28. Female Engineering Students Female engineering students continued their slow increase as a percentage of engineering degrees awarded at all degree levels: bachelor s, master s, and doctoral. The proportion of women among students receiving a bachelor s degree increased by one percent in 216 over the previous year, to 2.9 percent. The representation of women among bachelor s degree recipients has risen from 18.1 percent in 27 to 2.9 percent in 216. The highest proportion of degrees awarded to women in 216 was at the master s level 25.4 percent. This represented a slight percent increase over 215 and a three percent increase since 27. The representation of females among doctoral degree recipients also increased slightly from 23.1 percent in 215 to 23.3 percent in 216. The proportion of women among doctoral degree recipients has increased 2.5 percent from since 27, when they made up 2.8 percent of that cohort. Faculty The number of tenured and tenure-track faculty increased to 27,97 in 216. The number of full professors and assistant professors increased by 538 and 71, respectively, while the number of associate professors decreased by 18 from the fall of 215 to the fall of 216. The percentage of faculty members who are women increased by half a percent from 215 to 16.3 percent in 216. The representation of African Americans decreased slightly to 2.3 percent in 216, while that of Asian faculty increased to 27.5 percent and that of Latinos rose to 3.6 percent. More detailed data for 351 U.S. and 9 Canadian engineering colleges can be found in the following pages of the 216 Profiles of Engineering and Engineering Technology Colleges or online at Brian Yoder is director of assessment, evaluation and institutional research at the American Society for Engineering Education.
