2 Javelina Hash By Fred Nuesch, Coordinator of Athletic External Affairs THE JAVELINA ATHLETIC teams went 6-0 last Friday and aturday. The volleyball team swept matches from Midwestern State and ameron, wining each 3-0. The men s basketball team won wo games against South Dakota clubs. The women s basketball team opened with a victory over East entral Oklahoma. And the football team got its sixth consecutive victory with a ecision over Oklahoma Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla. FIVE LOUSY POINTS!! Except for five total points in three games, the Javelina football eam could have been 11-0 this year and entering the NCAA ivision II playoffs as one of the top-ranked teams. Talk about a comeback. But even without those five points, the Javelinas finished 8-3 ast weekend and it may be the biggest turnaround on the college ootball scene between 2015 and The Javelinas had been 2-9 the previous year. No doubt the Javelinas are one of the big success stories of the urrent season. And enough credit can t be given to the Javelina oaches and players for their dedication and effort. And hopefully it s just the tip of the iceberg of things to come. THE FOOTBALL TEAM wasn t the only Javelina success tory of the fall. The volleyball squad won its 25th match last weekend and no ther volleyball team in school history has won as many. As the time this was being written, the week s NCAA Division I South Central Region poll hadn t been released. If the Javelinas an move into one of the top eight positions, and retain it through he selections next weekend, they would reach the NCAA postseason playoffs for the first time since the intercollegiate olleyball program was started in This year s coaches and players have made the Javelina olleyball program one of the best in the Lone Star Conference and he NCAA region. THE JAVELINA FOOTBALL team gave Oklahoma Panhandle tate a rather harsh goodbye as the Aggies depart the Lone Star onference and NCAA Division II. In the middle of its first year in the league and national rganization, OPSU announced it would drop from both at the end f this season. In its swan song, the Aggies received a licking by the outh Texans. JAVELINA BASKETBALL FANS are being given an pportunity to see teams from several areas of the country this eason. The Javelina men s team hosted two squads from South Dakota (Continued on Page 3) Marco...Polo Members of the Javelina football team held a workout in the Steinke Center pool last week. Football Wins Sixth Straight (Continued from Page 1) tackles to lead the defensive unit. He has 4.5 tackles for losses. Braedon Robinson, 5-10, 255- pound junior lineman from San Antonio (East Central), has 47 tackles and 12.5 have been for losses. He has 4.5 sacks. Brandon Jones, 6-3, 250- pound sophomore lineman from Houston (Nimitz), has 46 tackles and 11.5 have been for losses. He has 9.5 sacks, best in the LSC. 3 Javelina Hash By Fred Nuesch, Coordinator of Athletic External Affairs (Continued from Page 2) (Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines) last weekend while the women hosted a team from Florida (Tampa) and another from Oklahoma (East Central). On Thanksgiving weekend, the men will host a team from Arkansas (Ouachita Baptist) and another from Oklahoma (Southeastern Oklahoma). These teams represent three different conferences. JAVELINA STADIUM WILL be the site of one of the top high chool playoff games in the state this weekend when Calallen and ercedes meet. The Friday night game is expected to bring thousands of tudents and fans to the TAMUK campus and Kingsville for the 7:30 p.m. matchup. Calallen has been one of the top-ranked teams in Class 5A this year and its head coach, Phil Danaher, recently became the all-time winningest high school coach in the state. As always, Javelina Stadium is one of the top spots for high school football playoffs each fall. FIVE OF THE six universities in the Texas A&M University System with football programs had winning records after last weekend s results. Texas A&M-Commerce was 9-1, the Javelinas were 8-3, Texas A&M-College Station was 7-3, Prairie View A&M was 6-4 and West Texas A&M was 6-5. Tarleton State was just under.500 with a 5-6 record. Several of the schools still have games remaining before closing out the 2016 campaign. I HAVE ALWAYS felt that polls are not a good gauge for etermining the best teams in the nation. The polls last week by the American Football Coaches Association and he American Volleyball Coaches Association are good examples. The Javelina volleyball team had a 23-8 record going into last eekend s schedule. Yet it didn t receive a vote in the AVCA poll. There was one team in the top 20 with a 19-9 record, another ith a 17-7 record and another was at These teams received as many as 412 points. And the Javelinas t 23-8 didn t receive a vote. And in the AFCA football poll, the Javelinas entered the week with a 7-3 record and having won five in a row. Yet the Javelinas didn t receive a vote. Two Lone Star Conference coaches are on the committee that selects the teams in the football poll each week. This week s polls hadn t been released at the time this column was written.
