1 Hoop It Up For The Javelinas Thursday, Saturday, Tuesday VOLUME XVII, NO. 24 KINGSVILLE, TEXAS JAN. 18, 2017 Basketball Hosting New Mexico Teams Thursday, Saturday Big Debut Charles Greaves, senior from Bridgetown,Barbados, had an impressive debut with the Javelina indoor track and field team last week in College Station. He won the long and triple jumps and set a school record in the triple. He was third in the 60- meter dash and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in the three The Texas A&M-Kingsville men s and women s basketball teams return home this week for a three-game stand and the first two series will be against squads from New Mexico. The Javelinas will host Eastern New Mexico Thursday night and Western New Mexico Saturday afternoon in the Steinke Center. The stand continues Tuesday when Angelo State comes to town. All are Lone Star opponents. The ENMU women s game is set for 5:15 p.m. and the men s contest will start at 7:30. Saturday s games will have the men playing at 2 p.m. and the women at 4. And Tuesday s schedule will have the women meeting at 5:15 and the men at 7:30. The Javelina men are 8-7 overall and 1-5 in the LSC standings. The men are led in scoring by Trey Sumpter, 6-5 junior guard/ forward from Birmingham, Ala., who averages 12.9 points a game. He is tied for the rebound lead with a 5.1 average. Duan Wright, 6-2 senior guard/forward from Alexandria, La., averages 11.1 points an outing and has a 5.1 rebound average. Caelan Neal, 6-0 junior guard from Olathe, Kan., is the third Javelina in double figures, hitting 10.3 a game. The Eastern men are 7-10 for the year and 1-6 in the LSC. Cornell Neal, 6-0 senior guard from Midwest City, Okla., leads the scoring with a 14.9 average. Marquisse Harris, 6-3 junior guard from Watts, Calif., averages 14.5 points a game and Joe Clarke, 6-3 junior guard from New Rochelle, N.Y., hits 10.8 a game. Chris Lewis, 6-8 junior Indoor Track & Field Impressive In Opening Meet With Division I Schools The Texas A&M-Kingsville men s and women s indoor track and field teams were impressive in their opening meet last week at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station. The Javelina men finished third in the field of 13 and the women were fifth. The Javelinas were the only non-ncaa Division I school in the competition. Two school records were broken and 13 of the performances were provisional qualifiers for the NCAA Division II Championships. Charles Greaves, senior from Bridgetown, Barbados, was a double winner, taking the long and triple jumps. His mark in the triple jump broke the school record of set by C.J. Griggs in 2013 and his winning long jump of is the second best for a Javelina indoors. Both were provisional marks and his long jump missed the automatic qualifying distance by one-half inch. The other school record was by Rachael Somoye, sophomore from Houston (Alief Taylor). She threw the weight throw , breaking the record 51-1 set by Tasha Savage in Somoye was fourth in her event last week. Other than Greaves two winning jumps, the Javelina golds came by; Christian Garcia, senior from Eagle Pass in the shot put ( ). Javier Lopez, senior from Cordova, Spain, in the 60-meter hurdles (8.06). Kaina Martinez, senior from Seine Bight, Belize, in the 200 (24.58). Deanna Richardson, sophomore from San Antonio (Brennan), in the 60-meter dash (7.52). The 14 provisional performances were by: Garcia in the shot put. Greaves in the long and triple jumps and 60-meter dash (6.86). Deon Hope, junior form St. Michael, Barbados, in the 60-meter dash (6.87). 2 Javelina Hash By Fred Nuesch, Coordinator of Athletic External Affairs THE JAVELINA INDOOR track and field teams competed with the big boys and girls last weekend at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station and again made a good showing. The men finished third in the 13-team standings and the women were fifth in the 13-team field. Several of the individuals won gold medals and even more impressive, some of the performances were the season s bests in NCAA Division II and the Lone Star. Deanna Richardson won the 60-meter dash and her time of 7.52 is the best in DII. Not only is Richardson No. 1, but teammates Kaina Martinez and Plaserae Johnson are second and third best nationally. Martinez won the 200-meter dash and her time of is the best in Division II. Charles Greaves swept the long and triple jumps in College Station and his in the long jump is the second best nationally and his mark in the triple is the third best in the nation. Richardson in the 60, Martinez in the 200, Greaves in the two jumps, Javier Lopez in the 60-meter hurdles, Christian Garcia in the shot put and Rachael Somoye in the weight throw have the best performances of the season in the LSC. THE INDOOR TRACK and field teams have a change in their chedule. Instead of going to the Fastrack National Invitational Feb n Staten Island, N.Y., the Javelinas will compete in the Track and ield Classic in the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco. The Ford Center is the headquarters of the Dallas Cowboys. The Texas meet is being billed as the first major indoor track nd field event in the Lone Star in decades. The Javelinas will compete in the Collegiate Classic I Feb. 9 and he Collegiate Classic II Feb. 10. EVEN THOUGH THEY weren t scoring points and garnering old medals for the Javelinas, Jeron Robinson and Lutalo Boyce ere at the Texas A&M Invitational Meet last week in College tation in support of their former teammates. Robinson is the all-time best high jumper in NCAA Division II nd one of the best jumpers ever, all divisions. He is currently on he pro circuit and sponsored by Nike. He begins his season in ebruary at a meet in Boston, Mass. Boyce is one of the all-time best long jumpers in Division II and s still attending TAMUK. TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE for the third annual Javelina Club omen s Brunch and Auction Saturday, Feb. 11, in the grand ballrooms of the Memorial Student Union Building on campus. The event has been sponsored by Ed Hicks Imports - ercedes-benz each year. Proceeds benefit the Javelina women s athletic program. Lorenzo Dillard, 6-2 junior guard from Chicago, Ill., averages 14.9 points a game and Thomas Tshikaya, 6-7 senior forward from Marne, France, averages 11.1 points an outing and leads the team in rebounding with an 8.9 average. Eastern is 12-3 overall and 8-0 in the LSC. The Zias are receiving votes in the national polls. Kassandra Harris, 5-10 senior center from Albuquerque, N.M., averages 11.7 points a game and Mikaekia Bonner, 5-9 junior forward from McKinney (North), averages Daeshi McCants, 6-1 junior center from La Cruces, N.M., is the leading rebounder with a 6.3 average. Western has a Thursday night game with Angelo State and enters that contest with a 4-11 season s record and 0-8 in the LSC. Jordan Gutierrez, 5-3 senior guard from Albuquerque, leads the scoring with a 175 average and Jade Botelho, 5-10 junior forward from Honolulu, Hawaii, hits 10.4 a game. Megan Looney, 6-0 sophomore forward from Phoenix, Ariz., is the leading rebounder with a 7.1 average. Like the men, the ASU women have games with Western and Eastern before coming to Kingsville. The Rambelles, ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation, are 13-1 overall and 7-1 in the LSC. Taylor Dorsey, 5-7 senior guard from Fort Worth (Dunbar), averages 19.1 points a game and Jasmine Prophet, 6-1 senior center from Jackson, Miss., averages Prophet leads the rebounding with a 6.9 average. THE NCAA DIVISION II delegates attending the NCAA onvention next week in Nashville, Tenn., will vote on 18 proposals ncluding three that could change the way financial aid is calculated or Division II athletes. Other topics include proposed legislation on academic isconduct, independent athletics medical care, and the structure of he non-championship segment in Division II sports. These proposals include: Permitting an athlete to receive competition-related expenses rom an outside sponsor other than an agent, a representative of an nstitution s athletic interests or a professional sports organization or participation in an outside event. Allowing an athlete, after initial full-time collegiate enrollment, o accept prize money in individual sports in an open event, provided the competition occurs outside the school s declared playing season during the school s official summer vacation period; the prize money is provided only by the sponsor of the event, and the prize money does not exceed the athlete s actual and necessary expenses of the event. Permitting an athlete to try out for a professional team and permit a professional team to conduct medical examinations at any time, provided the athlete doesn t miss class. It would require Division II schools to send a courtesy notification to the NAIA school before contact. Permitting athletes in team sports to miss class during the non-championship segment once every four years for competition against member schools in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or Canada. Likewise, permission would be granted for athletes on team sports at schools in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or Canada for competition on the U.S. mainland once every four years during the nonchampionship segment. Increasing the minimum number of contests required each year to meet sports sponsorship in women s volleyball from nine to 15. Requiring schools to establish an administrative structure where the primary athletic health care providers (team physicians and athletic trainers) would have unchallengeable authority on medical management and return-to-play decisions. Requiring schools to designate an athletic health care administrator to oversee the school s administration and delivery of athletic health care and ensure best practices are followed. Counting only athletic aid toward individual and team equivalency limits, exempting other forms of institutional aid such as academic and need-based aid. Eliminating conference restrictions on providing recruiting materials to prospective athletes, their parents, legal guardians and/ or coaches. Revising the football recruiting calendar to begin the winter contact period on the Monday after Thanksgiving. Increasing the maximum number of contests or dates of competition which an athlete could compete and remain eligible for a hardship waiver or a season-of-competition-while-eligible waiver. The new maximum would be three contests or dates of competition or 30 percent of the playing season. Requiring that the athlete s participation occur in the first half of the playing season. LONE STAR CONFERENCE notes: West Texas A&M new head football coach Hunter Hughes named several new members to this staff last week. J.T. Haddan is the assistant head coach and defensive line coach. He has been at Colorado State-Pueblo where he worked with Hughes, defensive coordinator before taking the WTAM job in December. Haddan was on the same staff as Daren Wilkinson, the Javelina football coach, at CSU-P. Miles Kochevar is the new Buffalo defensive coordinator and defensive back coach. He has been at Humboldt (Calif.) State as defensive coordinator. He spent three seasons at a defensive assistant at Colorado State and four years at Colorado-Mesa. Ryan McConough is the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. (Continued on Page 5) Men Rated in Herosports.com Basketball Poll The Texas A&M-Kingsville men s basketball team moved into the No. 35 spot in the NCAA Division II poll released by Herosports.com last week. The jump in the poll for the Javelinas came after their upset victory over No. 4-ranked Tarleton State. Other Lone Star teams in the poll were West Texas A&M No. 14 and Texas A&M-Commerce No. 23. Deontrae Cooper, who has been a wideout at Colorado State- Pueblo, will be a graduate assistant at WTAM and will work with the wide receivers. Hughes retained the services of Michael Collins, who was the special teams coordinator last season; Chris Pauling, who will be a defensive graduate assistant; Dan McDonald, who will be an offensive graduate assistang. Patric Youngman, a former WT linebacker, will become a defensive graduate assistant. James Helvey, who has been the Cameron men s tennis coach for 24 years and the women s coach for 17 seasons, has retired. A reception was held on the Cameron campus last week to celebrate his 24 years of service to the university. Patricia Husakova is the new assistant women s tennis coach at Midwestern. She is a former All-American player at Northeastern Oklahoma. Huskova, from Trencin, Slovakia, was on a doubles team that had a 21-1 record last spring. Shawn Neale has been hired as assistant baseball coach at West Texas A&M. He has been at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa for three seasons. Neale spend three seasons at Northwestern Oklahoma. He played at Bacone (Okla.) and holds his bachelor s degree from the school. Neale is a native of Ontario, Canada. NCAA DIVISION II notes: Josh Lynn, who has been the head football coach at Eastern New Mexico, was named the head football coach at Nebraska- Kearney last week. Lynn had been the head man at Eastern, his alma mater, since Ken Gordon was named the head football coach at Northwestern Oklahoma after being the defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Nebraska-Kearney in He played at Northwest Missouri and was a graduate assistant for the 1998 team that played the Javelinas in an NCAA Division II semifinal playoff game in Maryville, Mo. Gordon is a native of Quitman. Eric Smith has been named the head football coach at Glenville (W. Va.) State after serving as the offensive coordinator since Smith has coached at Charleston (W. Va.) and West Virginia University and was a graduate assistant at the University of Michigan. He is a graduate of West Virginia Tech. Martinez, senior from Seine Bight, Belize, posted the best 200- meter time in NCAA Division II in winning the event at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station. Her time provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in March. Martinez was third in the 60- meter dash in 7.58, also a provisional time. Greaves, senior from Bridgetown, Barbados, was a double winner at the College Station meet, winning the long and triple jumps. He broke the school record in the triple with a distance of , third best in Division II. Greaves had a in the long jump, second best mark posted this season in Division II.
