1 Andy Kesling External Relations (512) (512) East Anderson Lane P.O. Box 12788, Austin, Texas Higher Education continues to grow at record paces Preliminary fall enrollment figures indicate record growth in 2009 was no fluke The THECB has released preliminary statewide higher education enrollment numbers for fall Enrollment grew by more than 97,000 students at Texas universities, community and technical colleges, and independent (private) institutions. This increase follows record fall enrollment in 2009, where more than 121,000 new students entered higher education. The preliminary 2010 data does not include private career and technical colleges which will report their enrollments later this year. Overall the fall 2010 student population increased 97,645 to 1,464,081 for a 7.2 percent gain. More than two-thirds of the increase was concentrated in public two-year colleges in Texas. Community and technical colleges continue to drive enrollment increases in higher education. The dramatic increases in enrollment are occurring at the same time the state faces significant fiscal constraints. With enrollment growth of approximately 200,000 students in the past two years, now is the worst time to withhold financial support from higher education, Texas Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Raymund Paredes said. An entire generation of students could be lost if we look only at the bottom line and don t focus on the future of Texas, which will be shaped by an educated workforce that will strengthen the future economy of the state. Later this year, the THECB will release final certified enrollment numbers that will also reflect the private career colleges To schedule an interview regarding preliminary fall enrollments, contact Andy Kesling in External Relations, (512) , andy.kesling@thecb.state.tx.us.
