It is going to be a great fall with five new courses and four new instructors. Not-So-Newlywed Game submitted by Kinzie Jo Zimmerman Do you know what your sweetie s favorite color is? Ok, maybe that s too easy! How about this one: What is the name of the last person your love bug dated before they married you? Sound like a challenge? Nominate your favorite resident and staff couples to participate in the Not-So-Newlywed Game, hosted by Sales Leader, Kinzie Jo Zimmerman, and find out which couples know each other the best! Four couples will receive the opportunity to participate in this funfilled game and the winning couple, who proves they know each other the best, will receive an exciting prize. Nominate your favorite Not-So-Newlywed couples by writing their name on the nomination slips and placing them in the jar in the Game Room. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, Jan. 30. The Not-So-Newlywed Game will start at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in the Community Room. Come and watch the nominated couples compete - this is one Friday Night Program you won t want to miss! 2 UPCOMING EVENTS & ANNOUCEMENTS Diabetic Support Group A Diabetic Support Group led by Dietician, Lisa Schwartz, will begin meeting quarterly. The first meeting is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, in the KSU Classroom. The subsequent meetings are scheduled for the following Thursdays, April 30, July 30 and Oct. 29. All are welcome to attend. Collection Drive The Meadowlark Hills Ambassadors are hosting a collection drive from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the Living Room. Employees and residents are encouraged to bring in donation items. The following are items needed: shampoo & conditioner, lotion, deodorant, hair brushes & combs, soap, mouth wash, disposable diapers & wipes, baby shampoo, baby lotion, paper towels & napkins, toilet tissue, facial tissue, towels and linens. Items will be donated to the Crisis Center. Please call the Hospitality Desk during the collection drive time if you need assistance bringing items down. Vespers Services The Vespers service, led by the Glenn Fogo, will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, in the Community Room. All are welcome. KSU Men s Basketball Watch Parties Watch the KSU Men s basketball games in the Game Room at : 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, against Oklahoma State University 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, against West Virginia University 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, against the University of Kansas Refreshments will be served. Piano Performance Enjoy a piano performance by Leroy Johnson at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in the Community Room. Come by and enjoy some easy listening music. Lutheran Communion Service St. Luke's Lutheran Church will host a Communion Service the first Monday of every month. The first service is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in the Living Room. Reggae Musical Performance Kenrick Waite will be performing reggae music at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in the Community Room. Kenrick owns the Little Grill Jamaican Restaurant in Manhattan and is a prior employee of Meadowlark Hills. 3 UPCOMING EVENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS Jazz Performance The jazz group, R & R Band, will be putting on a performance at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, in the Community Room. The band is made up of KSU students, Robert Rodriguez on drums, Nolan Groff on bass, David Struss on trombone and Daniel Dissmore on trumpet. Hale Library Concert Series Meadowlark Hills is a sponsor of the Hale Library Concert Series. The second concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, in the Hemisphere Room in the Hale Library. The Friends of the K-State Libraries will be presenting a very special performance honoring composer Gail Kubik. Performers include K-State music faculty, including Amanda Arrington, piano, Paul Hunt, trombone, Tod Kerstetter, clarinet, David Littrell, strings, Kristin Mortenson, violin, and Craig Parker, trumpet. Transportation will depart at 6:45 p.m. from the Village Entrance, and there will be no charge. Sign up in the Blue Book for transportation. A ticket is required to attend this concert. Service of Remembrance You are invited to attend the Service of Remembrance to celebrate the lives of those we ve lost in the last month. The service will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in the Living Room. All are welcome to attend. Culture Story Writing Contest Don t forget to submit your entry to the Culture Story Contest by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13. There are two categories: staff and non-staff. For each category, there will be three cash prizes awarded to the top three stories: $500 (first), $250 (second) and $100 (third). Entries must be submitted with a completed entry form. Canvas & Cork Party You re invited to a Canvas & Cork Party with Straight Upp Creative Studio! A team from the studio, located in the Aggieville business district, will bring the fun to us Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m. in the Community Room. An instructor will lead the group, step by step, in painting a canvas with a pre-selected image. Light snacks and wine will be served during the party. The cost to attend is $30 per person. This includes all painting supplies and refreshments. If you are interested in attending, please sign up in the Blue Book at the Hospitality Desk. 4 February Focus Group The Focus Group scheduled for February will once again spotlight a staff member. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the employee, both on a personal and professional level. Every day staff is doing great things at Meadowlark Hills and this time will be used to hear more and ask questions. The staff attendee for the February Focus Group will be Project Manager, Robert Abell. Come meet Robert at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, in the KSU Classroom. Cultivating Community Through Shared Experiences The Beach Museum of Art is hosting a program called Cultivating Community Through Shared Experiences. The staff at the museum invites past military wives to be paired with current military wives at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Beach Museum of Art. The goal of this meeting is for citizens to connect with people they might not otherwise talk to and thereby build the community in Manhattan. The Beach Museum of Art is asking for 12 willing participants who were military wives in the past. Transportation is free and will depart from the Village entrance at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 29. Please sign up in the Blue Book at the Hospitality Desk. Committee Member Sign Up It is that time of year again to begin thinking about signing up for committees here on campus. You will find the sign up sheets in the Blue Book at the Hospitality Desk. At this time, you are able to retract your membership by marking off your name or apply for open positions on a committee by writing your name on the corresponding committee sheet you would like to join. If you would like to remain on a specific committee, write a yes beside your name in the Blue Book. The committees include the Resident Ambassador Committee, Buildings and Grounds Committee, Messenger/Clerical Committee, Bingo Committee, Art Committee, Messenger Delivery Committee and the History Committee. Page 4 UPCOMING EVENTS & ANNOUCEMENTS Super Bowl Watch Party You re invited to the Meadowlark Hills Super Bowl Party Sunday, Feb. 1, at 5:30 p.m. in the Game Room and Kansas Room and Pub. The New England Patriots will take on the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks! Heavy snacks will be served, including: wings, chips and queso, lil smokies, cheeseball with crackers, brownies and soda. The Pub will be open and drinks can be purchased throughout the game. Come enjoy the most anticipated NFL game of the year, pick your favorite commercials and watch the halftime show superstar, Katy Perry! Sign up in the Blue Book at the Hospitality Desk. There is no cost to attend. Kansas Day Celebration Trip to Topeka Residents and Passport members are invited on a day trip adventure to Topeka, Kan., in celebration of Kansas Day. The trip will include lunch at Red Robin Restaurant and a tour of the Kansas Museum of History. The excursion is set for Kansas Day, Thursday, Jan. 29. Transportation will depart at 10:30 a.m. from the Village Entrance. Upon arriving, we will enjoy lunch at Red Robin Restaurant,. After departing Red Robin Restaurant, we will head to the Kansas Museum of History. The Kansas Museum of History is an award-winning museum that tells the story of the people of Kansas. Transportation to Topeka and admission into the museum will be free. Lunch at Red Robin will be pay on your own. Registration for the trip is now full, but you can add your name to the wait list in the Blue Book. 5 ASK ANNIE Q: What is the process for reservations in Prairie Star? submitted by Annie Peace In an effort to meet everyone s needs here is the procedure for reservations at Prairie Star Restaurant. Reservations are taken anytime during hours of operation by stopping by Prairie Star or by calling Prairie Star at (785) Reservations are encouraged to be made at least one hour in advance. The restaurant will accept a maximum of five reservations for any one time slot depending on the size of the party. Tables that are reserved will not be seated with other parties within 45 minutes of the reservation time. A reservation will only be held a maximum of fifteen minutes after a scheduled reservation time. If the party has not arrived by that time, then the table will be released. In the case of the restaurant being full, the Manhattan Room will be utilized if it is not holding a private party or event and as staffing allows. Any parties over ten people are encouraged to book their reservations through the Hospitality Desk and utilize any of our rooms capable of hosting a party that large including the Manhattan Room, Living Room, Classroom and Community Room.
