Each Training Session starts with a Product Show at 5:00 PM. NOH Chapter Board Meetings convene at 5:00 PM also, and dinner follows at 6:00 PM. Each Training Session/Joint Meeting and dinner will cost $24.00 per person (subject to change) payable at the door. Attendance at these State Certified Training Sessions will earn you Continuing Education Units (CEU s) for each session attended. The Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE April 18, 2013 Hello to All, This 1st Quarter of the year has gone by quickly for the Chapter and me. It is hard to believe that we are staring at summer. This edition of the newsletter is packed full of past events the Chapter has been a part of and also upcoming events for the summer. Please take the time to check out what we have been up to and what is coming up. As you look through these events in the newsletter please take a moment to think about the amount of volunteered time and energy it takes to put these events on. Then ask yourself where you could help out. One way could be to volunteer a couple of hours for our last Boy Scout Merit Badge session before summer on Saturday, May 11th. By far, for me, these are the best events that Chapter is doing to help promote ASSE and the Cleveland Plumbing Industry (CPI). The appreciation that the Scouts and Parents have shown and expressed, for what we do every day for the Society, is really evident. Look at the photo galleries of the Boy Scout Merit Badge events and the Annual Apprenticeship Contest and you will see what we are doing to promote the Plumbing trade in this area. It also opens up a whole new world to the young Scouts in regards to other opportunities for their lives and future endeavors. Another option would be to attend our last joint Chapter meeting with ASPE on Wednesday, May 8th; the the ASSE/ASPE Lake County Captain s Ball Game on June 29th; or the ASSE/ASPE Annual Golf Outing on August 1st. You can find the information and registration forms listed in this newsletter. Regardless if you make any or all of these events have a nice, enjoyable summer. Committee Reports Ed reported on the meeting he chaired for the PQ series Another meeting Thursday. Hope to have completed in 6 months. Golf Committee Dan reported on the golf outing. Jason and Dan to compile mailing list as like last year. 5. Old Business Reviewed dates for Merit Badge 5/11/13 Full Last one before summer. Need to pick dates for fall 2013 at May meeting. Strawberry Festival June 9th Terry will be reporting at the next meeting. Review Moen Training session Completed last one. They may request more but as of now we are completed. Katz 3rd Jeff Surella 5th year apprentice Soehlen Piping Jason asked ASPE chapter if they wish to have a meeting at the Training Center as mentioned at last Chapter meeting. Maybe in the fall of Awaiting response. 6. New Business Reviewed ASSE Mid-Year Schedule. Recommend all to attend the Mid-year meeting and the Board meeting on Saturday April 20th at 8:00 A.M. Ed suggested that we forward the info about medical gas training to ASPE for next year meeting topic. Jason to do this. Jason reported that Local 55 and CPI will be hosting a dinner on Thursday, April 18th at the Training Center for the NOH Chapter and attendees of the ASSE Mid-Year Meeting. Meeting Adjourned at 5:45 P.M. Rich motioned the issue and Terry seconded it.

4 Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE and Plumbers Local 55 UA JATC Conducts another Boy Scouts of America Plumbing Merit Badge Training Session On March 23, 2013, 17 Boy Scouts from Troop 882 (Macedonia, OH), 1 from Troop 223 (Twinsburg), who previously missed earlier training, 5 Scouts from Troop 309 (Pepper Pike, OH), and 1 Scout from Troop 597 were trained and received their Plumbing Merit Badge certificates. All training was in accordance with BSA standard procedures and was conducted by Plumbers Local 55 UA JATC and the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE on that Saturday morning. This group was the 5th group of BSA troops that have been trained through this program taken on by the Chapter, of which Jason Shank is President and the current Training Director of Plumber Local 55 UA JATC. The first troop was trained in June of 2012 and the next group followed in October and November of This is the first group in 2013 with 3 more groups scheduled throughout this year. Training started at 8:30 AM after a breakfast of donuts, coffee and refreshments. Lunch of pizza was served at 12:00 noon after their classroom session in the morning, which was followed by the afternoon of hands-on pipe cutting and threading, soldering copper joints and a session on service repair work on faucets, water heaters and toilets. Troop 882: Macedonia Joshua Hale, Ryan Henderson, Athan McNeal, Dave Fisher, Santiago Ferguson, Charlie Bzdafka, Vincent Costello, Hunter Trimble, Aidan Wells, Zack Wysock, Brandon Drazil, Michael Fletcher, Garret Harp, Michael Mates, Lucas Mates, Thomas Mackerty Troop 223: Twinsburg Jared Doe Troop 309: Pepper Pike Nolan Wiley, Michael Chmiel, Michael Chmiel Ryan Kochis, PatrickTaylor Troop 597: Caleb Palagyi Trainers from Plumbers Local 55 and the NOH Chapter of ASSE were: Jason Shank, Jim Sherman, Doreen Cannon, Ed Lyczko, Bob Tesar (Photographer), and help from a few Apprentices. 7 ASSE Northern Ohio Chapter - Plumbers Local 55 UA CPI - Annual Apprentice Contest March 26, 2013 On March 26, 2013, approximately 60 first through fifth year apprentices met at 4:30 PM to chow down on Pizza and Pop furnished by CPI, Local 55 Plumbers Union JATC, and the NOH Chapter of ASSE before taking their Annual 50 question written Test, for prize money. Following the test, the volunteers from the Chapter and Local 55 graded the test to determine the first prize ($300.00) winner, second prize ($200.00) winner, and third prize($100.00) winner. The photos below document the procedure and admission of the event.

8 ASSE Northern Ohio Chapter - Plumbers Local 55 UA CPI - Annual Apprentice Awards Ceremony April 10, 2013 On March 26, 2013, 60 First through Fifth year Apprentices were available to take the Annual Apprentice Contest Test sponsored by the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE, Local 55 UA Plumbers JATC, and CPI at the Training Center shown below. They assembled at 4:30 P.M. for Pizza and Pop before taking the 50 question (True and false-multiple choice questions) starting at 5:00 P.M. The incentive for doing well on this test is a first prize of $300.00, second prize of $200.00, and a third prize of $ Each winning contestant also receives a free one year membership to the NOH Chapter of ASSE. They are also presented their awards at the April 10, 2013 Meeting of the Chapter, where they received their meal and a guests meal courtesy of the Chapter. This year s winners were: $300 First Place Tom Rymarczyk 4th Yr. Apprentice (Ridge Plumbing) $200 Second Place Christopher Thaxton 4th Yr. Apprentice (E.B.Katz Co.) $100 Third Place Jeff Surella 5th Yr. Apprentice (Soenhlen Piping) This test was put together by Jason Shank, Training Director and President of the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE and his trainers, from articles, codes, training curriculum, and ASSE Standards, in an effort to promote the Plumbing Industry in Cleveland and to encourage graduating Apprentices to join ASSE to further their knowledge and networking efforts in the Industry. Jeff Surella, the third place winner was not available for a photo at the Awards Dinner

9 NOH Chapter of ASSE / Cleveland Chapter of ASPE April 10th, 2013 Joint Training Session/Meeting On April 10th, 2013, approximately 30 members and guests from the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE and the Cleveland Chapter of ASPE were present for the very timely program on Steam Heat Transfer presented by David Cronin, Area Manager, for Spirex/Sarco Co., USA. Spirex/Sarco is one of the leading manufacturers of Steam Controls, Traps, Regulators and components for the steam boiler and power generating industry. Dave presented an informative Power Point, which is available online at the NOH web site. His program explained the Perceived Negative Steam Issues: High Installation Cost Cost Savings with Decentralization High Maintenance Safety Poor Performance He went on to explain that a modern steam system consists of proper pipe sizing, traps and their correct sizing and placement, steam conditioning equipment, automatic air vents and vacuum breakers and effective return of as much of condensate as possible. His presentation answered the question Why do we use Steam? : High Heat Transfer - Smaller Pipe Sizing - Lower Installation Costs - Gives up Energy without giving up its Temperature - Clean and Sterile Energy Source Easy to control because of pressure and temperature relationship - No Pumps required - it is a very forgiving Medium when installed properly For those who were unable to attend, this complete Power Point Presentation is available in PDF format on the NOH Web site listed below. 10 Happenings at the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE March - April 2013 Schedule of Events at the NOH Chapter of ASSE Moen Plumbing Basics Training Sessions Training for 12 personnel was completed at the Moen Corporation located at their North Olmsted Corporate Headquarters by Jason Shank and Rich Prospal on March 27, 2013, a follow-up to the initial session on January 29, These sessions were the start of a series of training programs in the principles of plumbing and water connection properties. Our successful training, conducted for Moen last year to the Customer Call Center, prompted these sessions to other Moen employees to make them more savvy to real world conditions and installation of their products. Everyone who attended these session said they learned a lot of practical information usable in their everyday jobs. Boy Scouts of America Plumbing Merit Badge Training March 23, 3013 was our first Boy Scouts of America Plumbing Merit Badge session for this year down at the UA Local 55 Plumbers Training facility. These sessions had been so successful last year, that we decided to continue this year as well. We have scheduled another one for May 11, 2013, which is completely booked, but will schedule a couple more in the Fall. Details and dates in later issues of this Newsletter. Ken Kerr awarded the NOHPE award on April 10th, 2013 At the April 10th ASSE/ASPE Meeting, the Northern Ohio Chapter of ASSE, represented by Pat Sugrue IPP, awarded Mr. Ken Kerr, IPP and current President of APBA, the prestigious Northern Ohio Pinnacle of Excellence (NOHPE) Award Trophy for his overall excellence and performance to the Plumbing Industry, while promoting our motto Prevention Rather than Cure. Congratulations Ken, and keep up the good work!
