Welcome to the Annual Report for the University of Oklahoma Athletics Department. We believe that it is most important for us to share this report with you, our stakeholders, because you have played a role in everything that we do. An annual report is a snapshot of the previous year, highlighting the success of the organization. In the case of the Sooners, we might need a full-sized photo album as we have closed the books on one of the most successful years in our history. We took our expectations, already high, and raised the bar yet again as we continued to do everything to support our mission Inspiring Champions Today and Preparing Leaders for Tomorrow. Our student-athletes won five conference championships in , the ninth time in school history that Sooner teams have won at least five titles. Our combined finishes in national rankings earned the program a top 25 finish in the U.S. Sports Academy Director s Cup standings for the seventh time in the last eight years. We continue to graduate studentathletes at a higher rate each year and 10 of our teams recorded team grade points averages above a All of this has been made possible, in part, because of your commitment to the University of Oklahoma, our athletics department and, most important, our people. It is the people who make the difference at OU. As one of our partners, you have helped make a difference. As I prepare to enter my 10th year as your director of athletics, I am excited about the state of this department. When I talk to the parents of a prospective student-athlete, I can tell them that we will give their son or daughter the very best opportunity to succeed in the classroom and in competition, to become the very best person he or she can be. I have the results to back up that promise. Your continued involvement with us guarantees my words. I hope you enjoy looking back at the past year. I certainly did as we prepared this information. If you have any questions or comments, please contact our department. On behalf of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, thank you again for your continued loyalty. Women s Gymnastics Sunny Golloway STUDENT-ATHLETE PROFILE: Carl Pendleton Carl Pendleton wasn't motivated by the potential of public adulation when he opted to end his college football career one year early. The decision to adopt his step-brother Kierstan was one he made because it felt right, not because it might impress others. It is interesting, and refreshing, how personal decisions made within the bounds of a family can still attract the spotlight. First it was the National Football Foundation's Post-Graduate Scholarship. Then it was the Bobby Bowden Award, the highest honor presented to any student-athlete by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The NCAA then named Pendleton a recipient of its postgraduate scholarship and finally the Big 12 Conference named him its male sportsperson of the year. jhosted a Safe Trick-or-Treat at the Sooner Housing Center, providing candy, games and safe entertainment for hundreds of local children and their families. The honors poured in for Pendleton, who, in addition to accomplishing so much on the field and in his personal life, also achieved a 3.81 grade point average while earning his undergraduate degree in 3.5 years. jsponsored a campus-wide blood drive with the American Red Cross that led to more than 180 donors whose donations will help save the lives of more than 1,000 people. jmade contact with more than 1,000 Norman Public School students in 20 schools, participating in tutoring, mentoring, speaking engagements, and other special events through the Life Skills Program. "I wanted to make the most of the opportunities I was given by coming to the University of Oklahoma," Pendleton said. "God blessed me with the ability to play here." Pendleton credits his approach to the lessons he learned from his mentor, the late Jesse Barnes, Jr., a pastor who Pendleton came in contact with while living in Georgia as a young man. "I believe everything I have gone through in my life is a building block for what is to come," Pendleton continued. "Pastor Barnes told me that God had a big plan for my life. He told me that if I hadn't been through a storm yet in my life to wait a while and I would go through one. He said the storms make you tougher and after getting through one storm, anything that follows has to be of greater magnitude to have any effect on you." Others completed their college football careers more decorated than Pendleton. Few left more respected. Erin Higgins & Courtney Paris 6 7

Our Spo s To pursue and win championships with class and integrity... FOOTBALL Oklahoma s 40th conference championship would rank among its most unlikely to everyone but the team that accomplished the feat. August brought news of two dismissed starters. Not long after that, the Sooners were subjected to an officiating gaff at Oregon that yielded an apology from the Pacific 10 Conference. A couple weeks later, Heisman candidate Adrian Peterson went down with an injury that deprived him of most of the Big 12 schedule Big 12 Champions In a very short period of time, the circumstances had Bob Stoops changed dramatically. The ranks of the skeptics swelled quickly, but never were they able to penetrate the walls of the Switzer Center. OU head coach Bob Stoops centered on a message that every football team has 100 or so players and that it would then turn to another player to step forward, regardless of the position or the fortunes of football. And step up they did. The Sooners, after losing two of their first five games, stormed to a nine-game winning streak that included a Big 12 South title and a 21-7 triumph over Nebraska in the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship Game. The team landed in the Fiesta Bowl, a trip that enabled several among the 2006 senior class to claim at least one appearance in each of the BCS Bowls Paul Thompson is inserted as the starting quarterback. Leads OU to an 11-3 mark, a Big 12 Championship and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl The newly renovated John Crain Field at the OU Soccer Complex hosts its first regular season game with OU battling Michigan. OU finished the season with an 11-3 mark and Stoops was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year. Twenty-six players picked up post-season honors, recognizing on-the-field prowess to academics to citizenship. Rufus Alexander The tangibles of league titles and bowl trips will be visible forever, but it was the fortitude and heart of the 2006 Sooners that truly defined the team Rob Sorrell becomes the first Sooner freshman on record to win his debut race at the season-opening Hurricane Invitational in Tulsa. 9 kkk

OU Volleyball cracks the Top 25 polls for the first time since Jennifer Nichols records her seventh shutout of the season, tying a school record she established in Joanna Schmitt Santiago Restrepo VOLLEYBALL Prior to the 2006 season, nobody thought twice about the Oklahoma volleyball team on its schedule, but by the end of the season the Sooners found themselves ranked 12th in the final poll. OU finished the season with a 28-6 overall record and a second place finish in the Big 12, behind Nebraska, the 2006 national champions. In his third year at the helm of the Sooner program, head coach Santiago Restrepo earned Big 12 and Central Region Coach of the Year. He recorded the best wining percentage in school history (.824) and led Oklahoma to one of the most impressive turnarounds in the country (and best in Big 12 history). The improved performance earned Oklahoma a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since Oklahoma advanced to the Sweet 16 round for only the second time in school history before falling to Pac-10 powerhouse UCLA. Two Sooners earned All-America honors, another first since the 1997 season. Senior Eliane Santos was named a third team All-American and Joanna Schmitt earned honorable mention honors. Oklahoma placed five on the All-Big 12 teams with Santos earning Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors while Anna Monsen was named the Co-Libero of the Year. SOCCER The OU soccer team's season ended for the second consecutive season in San Antonio, Texas, with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bedlam rival, Oklahoma State, in the Big 12 Championship. The Sooners finished 2006 with an overall record and a mark in Big 12 play. After a disappointing 3-8 start, OU finished the regular season strong with a mark. Nine of the Sooners' 11 defeats in 2006 were by one goal, including five in conference play. Kady Kelly Senior Kady Kelly led the Sooners offensively with eight goals, tying her for third all-time on the OU single-season list. She finished the regular season ranked in the Big 12 s top 10 in goals, assists and points. For the second consecutive season, goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols led the defense with seven shutouts. Nichols holds the single-season record for shutouts and ranks second on the all-time OU list after blanking 14 opponents. The Sooners placed 10 players on the Big 12's first and second All-Academic teams, the third highest total in the conference. Among the first team honorees was Helen Ajufo, who became the fourth Sooner in program history to be named to the ESPN The Magazine s Academic All-District VI second team. Jennifer Nichols CROSS COUNTRY Jessica Eldridge became just the sixth woman in school history to earn All-America honors in cross country with her 18th-place finish at the NCAA National Cross Country Championships With the sweep over Kansas State, OU completes best oneyear turnaround in Big 12 history Oklahoma wins its seventh consecutive SUNY Brockport/Oklahoma Gold wrestling tournament, Sam Hazewinkel takes home his fourth title Playing in just his 19th OU game (at Missouri), Malcolm Kelly reaches the 1,000-yard career receiving mark faster than any other player in Sooner history. Eliane Santos Eldridge, a junior from Broken Arrow, also earned All-Big 12 honors for the third time when she finished fourth at the 2006 Big 12 Cross Country Championships, the best finish ever by a Sooner. The OU women finished eighth in conference while the OU men were ninth, a sign of progress under second-year head coach Martin Smith after the squads placed 12th and 11th, respectively, the year before In his first collegiate start true freshman Chris Brown rushes 24 times for 169 yards and one touchdown in a victory at Baylor. Jason Coleman, who was 37th, was the top men s finisher. Coleman was the lone upperclassman, leading a crew of seven freshmen for the entire season Jeff Capel coaches his first game at Oklahoma, a win over Norfolk State that tied for the eighth largest victory margin in school history. Jessica Eldridge One of those young runners, Rob Sorrell, showed his potential early, becoming the first Sooner freshman on record to win in his debut when he paced the field to win the season-opening Hurricane Invitational in Tulsa Bob Stoops is named the Big 12 Football Coach of the Year. 11

Rufus Alexander becomes Oklahoma s 142nd football All-American Oklahoma wins its 40th football conference title, a 21-7 triumph over Nebraska in the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship in Kansas City Eliane Santos (third team) and Joanna Schmitt (honorable mention) are the second and third Sooners to collect volleyball All-America honors Courtney Paris scores an OU-record 43 points and clears 25 rebounds in an win over New Mexico at the Cox Center. Nate Carter Jeff Capel MEN S BASKETBALL Jeff Capel's first year as OU's men's basketball head coach will be remembered as a challenging one. Following the release of three signed recruits from their letters of intent, a team of 10 scholarship players and two walk-ons finished the season with a record. OU's winning record was the program's 26th straight, preserving the longest streak among Big 12 schools. The Sooners, picked to finish in ninth place in the Big 12 by the league's head coaches, tied for seventh with a 6-10 Michael Neal record. Oklahoma's postseason chances appeared bright as it stood at 6-4 just past the midway point of conference play. But a string of narrow losses, some to nationally ranked foes, left OU on the outside looking in for the first time since Capel refused to allow the lack of an NCAA or NIT bid to define the season and noted that his squad accomplished much, particularly defensively. The Sooners held opponents to just 59.6 points a game, the lowest figure by an OU team in 29 years. OU also held opposing teams to a field goal percentage of 40.6 percent, the second lowest mark over the past 46 seasons. The Sooners' most impressive wins came in back-to-back games in early February against rivals Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. Trailing against Tech, OU finished the game on a 20-2 run to post a convincing victory. Senior Nate Carter netted 24 points and junior Longar Longar had an impressive 19-point, 14-rebound effort. The duo led OU again in a triumph over 17thranked OSU four days later with Carter registering 18 points and nine rebounds and Longar contributing 13 points, seven boards and three blocks. Carter delivered the year's most compelling individual story by earning third-team All-Big 12 accolades. After averaging just 4.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in non-conference play, the forward parlayed increased playing time into league averages of 16.5 points and 7.1 boards. Three other seniors, Michael Neal, Kellen Sampson and Chris Walker, also finished their Oklahoma careers. Neal and Sampson were first team Academic All-Big 12 selections. WOMEN S BASKETBALL The Oklahoma women s basketball team finished the season with a 28-5 record, a No. 9 ranking, the Big 12 regular season championship, the Big 12 postseason championship and a Sweet 16 appearance. The Sooners became the first program in Big 12 history to collect back-toback regular season and postseason championships. The success in 2007 gives the Sooners more Big 12 regular season (5) and postseason (4) championships than any team in the Big 12. OU posted a 13-3 regular season conference record. It marked the fifth time OU has won the regular season title 2007 Seniors (2000, 2001, 2002, 2006 & 2007) and the fifth time OU has won 13 or more league games. The Sooners repeat of the postseason championship came after wins over Texas (quarterfinals), Baylor (semifinals) and Iowa State (title game) during action at the Cox Center in Oklahoma City. It was the fourth postseason championship (2002, 2002, 2006 & 2007) in school history. OU played in front of unprecedented Big 12 Championship crowds, including a state record of 12,413 in the title game. OU reached the NCAA Tournament for the eighth consecutive season and postseason play for the ninth consecutive year. A pair of wins in the sub-regional gave the No. 3 seed Sooners a return trip to the Sweet 16 where they fell to a defensive-minded Ole Miss squad. Courtney Paris, the AP National Player of the Year and consensus All-American, led the Sooners. The sophomore, who also was the consensus Big 12 Player of the Year and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, averaged 23.5 points, 15.9 rebounds and 3.4 blocks while shooting 57 percent from the floor and collecting a double-double in all 33 games. She added seven NCAA records during her sophomore season to boost her career total to 11. Six seniors completed their Sooner careers, highlighted by Leah Rush and Chelsi Welch, who both earned All-Big 12 honorable mention. Rush finished 11th on the OU career scoring list with 1,427 points. Welch closed her career with 1,186, good for 18th on the OU career scoring list. She ended her career as the best free throw shooter in school history after hitting 85.5 percent of her attempts Big 12 Champions Courtney Paris New head coach K.J. Kindler leads the Sooners to a near-upset of No. 3 Alabama in Tuscaloosa in the team s season opener An overtime forcing 3- pointer by Erin Higgins and 20 points from Kendra Moore help OU hold off Texas Tech in double-overtime Junior Kiara Redmond scores a 10.0 on vault at Texas Woman s University, the first perfect score for a Big 12 gymnast in During the first ever Pack the Place Pink Night, OU draws a crowd of 11,245 and eclipses 100,000 in season attendance for the first time in program history. 13

The Sooners win their 10th match of the season defeating No. 6/8 Hofstra, extending their streak of consecutive 10-win seasons to 12 under head coach Jack Spates True freshman Chelsey Collins fires a second-round 68 in her first collegiate tournament appearance. Matt Storniolo Sam Hazewinkel WRESTLING A rugged as usual schedule and a roster depleted by injury provided challenges but the Sooner wrestling team still managed to finish with 10 or more wins for the 12th straight season. Head coach Jack Spates, in his 14th season at the helm, led the team to an 11-7 record. Of the 18 matches, 11 were against top 25 teams, including all four Big 12 teams. There were individual achievements to celebrate as well. For the second consecutive season, OU produced individual Big 12 champions. Seniors Sam Hazewinkel (125 pounds) and Matt Storniolo (149 pounds) became the first pair of Sooners to collect titles in the same season since Led by Hazewinkel, six Sooners qualified for the NCAA Championships. Hazewinkel finished as the runner-up at 125 pounds and became a four-time All-American in the process. OU also took care of things in the classroom, leading the conference with four All-Big 12 honorees. Hazewinkel, Joel Flaggert and Joshua Weitzel were first team honorees while Kyle Terry was named to the second team. MEN S GYMNASTICS The Oklahoma men s gymnastics team pushed host Penn State to the final event at the 2007 NCAA Championships, but couldn t overcome the Nittany Lions. The Sooners, gunning for the program s first NCAA three-peat, settled for national runner-up. The weekend was not without champions, however. Junior Taqiy Abdullah-Simmons turned in perhaps the best performance of his OU career to claim the NCAA all-around national title. Jonathan Horton Jonathan Horton made history at the event, winning NCAA event titles on the high bar and floor exercise. With five career individual national titles, Horton broke Bart Conner s school record. He also broke Conner s program mark for career All-America honors, earning the distinction on five events (all-around, floor exercise, still rings, high bar and vault) to up his career total to 15. Oklahoma once again led the nation with 11 total All-Americans at the meet. Sophomore Russell Czeschin earned the first honor of his career on the floor exercise, while Chris Brooks repeated as an All-American on high bar. Despite injuries and early setbacks, head coach Mark Williams led the Sooners to the program s eighth Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship. Williams was also honored as the conference s Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his eight seasons at Oklahoma. Taqiy Abdullah-Simmons Jonathan Horton takes his second straight Tyson American Cup crown OU head coach Sunny Golloway records the 400th victory of his career Sooners win their second consecutive Pacific Coast Classic title, defeating four of the nation s top 10 teams Patty Gasso claims her 600th victory at Oklahoma INDOOR TRACK & FIELD OU saw all-time best Big 12 team finishes for the men (third) and women (fourth), four conference champions, seven All-Americans (including a program-record six women) and six individual event records broken a year s worth of accomplishments that occurred in just a three-month span during the indoor season. Chip Heuser finished fourth in the pole vault to repeat Portia Nash as an All-American. Portia Nash and Toni Smith, respectively, became All-Americans in the long jump and triple jump and the women s distance medley relay of Catherine Odell, Leslie Cole, Kristi Cook and Jessica Eldridge broke the school record and became the first Sooner women to earn the honor in the event under the NCAA banner. Frankie Wright posted a personal best in the long jump to win a Big 12 title and Nash did the same, using her final attempt to pull an upset victory. Marcus Pugh overcame the pressure of losing teammate and event favorite Ronnie Pines to dominate and take the 60-meter dash title at the Big 12 Championships. Marcus Pugh Brittney Koncak-Schumann Kiara Redmond WOMEN S GYMNASTICS The 2007 Oklahoma women s gymnastics season was a time for beginnings. In June, the Sooners hired three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year K.J. Kindler away from Iowa State with the hopes that she could take the OU program to the next level. Led by senior Brittney Koncak-Schumann, who won a share of the floor exercise title, OU finished second at the Big 12 Championships in March. The Sooners headed to Tuscaloosa for the NCAA Central Regional on April 14. OU tied Kindler s former Iowa State squad for second place. The Sooners then finished eighth at the NCAA Championships, the highest finish in program history. There were individual performances to celebrate from the NCAA. Kiara Redmond finished as a first team All-American on vault, floor exercise and in the all-around. Saving her best for her last performance, Koncak-Schumann, in her final collegiate competition, earned first team All-America honors on the vault and finished in a tie for third in the event finals OU scores a win over Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship opening round in Oklahoma City Toni Smith places fourth in the triple jump at the NCAA National Indoor Track & Field Championships. 15

Vaclav Kucera WOMEN S TENNIS A seasoned squad knows how to win at home and that was the case for the Sooner women s tennis team. OU finished with a 5-2 home mark and was 9-13 overall for the season. A 4-3 win over Kansas, the second of the season, sent the Sooners to the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Championships. The season ended with a 4-0 loss to Texas A&M in that round. Oklahoma ended the season with a 5-6 record in the Big 12, good for a sixth place finish. MEN S TENNIS Led by a roster that included just one senior, the 2007 Oklahoma men s tennis team was one of the most successful in program history. OU faced a tough schedule with 19 of its 29 matches versus ranked opponents. Oklahoma went 10-9 against ranked squads and lost only one match to a lower-ranked team. Paul Lockwood With four of eight players new to the team, OU head coach Paul Lockwood quickly blended the team into a national contender. The Sooners claimed the Rice Invitational title after defeating two top-30 squads and one top-25 team. The upsets did not go unnoticed as the Sooners climbed from No. 54 to No. 23 in the ITA polls. The jump into the top 25 ended a 15-year absence. Lockwood, in his 20th season with OU, reached a career milestone with his 300th career victory in the Sooners win over Texas Tech in the final conference match of the season. The No. 5 Sooners upset No. 4-seed Nebraska in the Big 12 Tournament to advance to the semifinal round. OU was knocked out of the tournament by the eventual champion, Baylor, but claimed the No. 2 doubles title for the second consecutive season. Freshman Vaclav Kucera was named to the All-Big 12 singles team, while Andrei Daescu and Federico Chavarria landed on the All-Big 12 doubles team. Anne Carter Five seniors led 2007 squad to several upsets, including OU s first Big 12 win of the season, a 4-3 victory over Texas Tech. Lykina, Christi Baxley, Anne Carter, Melissa Mercer and Gabby Baker led OU s honorees on the Academic All-Big 12 squad as first team selections. Rachael Cox represented Oklahoma on the second team. Baker received special recognition for her grade point average of 4.0. This marked the second consecutive year for the Sooners to place four or more studentathletes on the first team. Monica Purice SOFTBALL The 2007 Oklahoma softball team completed one of the most successful seasons in school history after finishing with an overall record of 55-8 and winning the Big 12 Championship for the third time in school history. OU s final record marked the second highest winning percentage in school history, right behind the 2000 National Championship squad that finished with a 66-8 record. The Sooners opened the season on fire as their 23-0 start marked the best opening to a season in school history. Oklahoma was dominant in non-conference as it claimed the Diamond Fun and Sun Classic title and also run-ruled Pac-10 powerhouse Arizona en route to the Judi Garman Classic Championship. Samantha Ricketts Oklahoma finished second in league play with a 14-4 record before sweeping through the Big 12 Championship where pitcher Lauren Eckermann took home MVP honors. It was more of the same for Eckermann who had been named Co-Big 12 Pitcher of the Year. Senior Norrelle Dickson became OU s fifth Big 12 Player of the Year since the inception of the conference. The conference title sent the Sooners to their 14th straight NCAA Tournament, including 13 consecutive under head coach Patty Gasso. Oklahoma earned its highest national seed, No. 3, and was sent to Amherst, Mass., where it claimed its seventh regional championship with a win over Colgate and two wins over host school UMass. The Sooners returned to Norman for its second Super Regional in the last three years. Despite sellout record crowds at the OU Softball Complex, a red-hot DePaul squad swept OU to take the title. Despite the unexpected exit in the Super Regional, OU players filled the national award lists. Oklahoma claimed seven All-Big 12 selections as well as six All-Midwest Region honors. The Sooners tied with Tennessee for the most All-America honors this season with four. Dickson became only the second player in school history to earn All-America honors three times when she was named to the first team. Susan Ogden and Samantha Ricketts earned spots on the second team and Eckermann was named to the third team. Ricketts capped off the season as she became the first player in OU history to be named one of three finalists for USA Softball s National Player of the Year. After a slow start to the season, Oklahoma reeled off 11 straight victories, including five wins over top 25 teams. Following the 2-4 start, the Sooners won 18 of their next 21 games, including a 2-1 series win over then- No. 8 Texas A&M in the Big 12 opener. The quick start in conference play slowed down following three straight series defeats, all 2-1 decisions, against Texas, Baylor and Steven Porlier Nebraska. In the final five weekends of Big 12 play, the Sooners finished with two series wins over Kansas State and Texas Tech and dropped three series (Kansas, Oklahoma State and Missouri). Aaron Ivey The Sooner men s track and field team wins its first Big 12 Championship, its first conference title since The Sooners begin play at the NCAA Central Regional, extending head coach Jim Ragan s post-season streak to seven years Freshman Jesse Schutte is named the 2007 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. WOMEN S GOLF The women s golf team posted nine top-10 team finishes on the season, the most since The fall schedule saw the Sooners post two finishes in the top five, tying for third at the Badger Invitational and finishing fourth in the Jeannine McHaney Invitational. Kelly Jacques was the top Sooner finisher at all five fall tournaments. The spring tournament schedule saw several players step up to lead the team. Freshman Chelsey Collins posted two top- Kelly Jacques 20 finishes and tied an 18-hole low for OU with a 4-underpar 68 in the second round of her first collegiate tournament, the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Sophomore Kendall Dye had the other 4-under round en route to a career-best second-place finish at the Mountainview Intercollegiate during the spring schedule. Juniors Heather Wright and Jacques remained constant in the lineup and produced three and five top-20 finishes, respectively. Jacques saved her best for last, firing a three-round 229 in the Big 12 Championships. She earned a spot on the Big 12 All-Tournament team with her fourth place tie. A strong showing in the Big 12 Championship, which included wins over No. 11 Missouri and No. 21 Oklahoma State, was not enough for the Sooners to qualify for their fourth straight NCAA Tournament. A 7-6 loss to Baylor, which sent the Bears to the title game, ended the Sooners season and bid for their first Big 12 title since Individually, senior outfielder Aaron Ivey s solid season was capped off by winning the ESPN the Magazine and CoSIDA s Academic All-American of the Year Award, a first in program history and a first for any Sooner since 2002 (Stacey Dales women s basketball). Ivey was also named a first team Academic All-American. He joined Joseph Hughes on the Academic All- Big 12 first team. Junior Jackson Williams and sophomore Stephen Porlier earned spots on the All-Big 12 teams, as picked by the conference s coaches, with second team honors. Catcher Jackson Williams was selected 43rd overall in the supplemental first round by the San Francisco Giants. He is the first OU player since David Purcey (17th overall) to be drafted in the first round. Williams was one of nine Sooners (including signed players) taken in 2007 along with Joe Dunigan (fifth round) and Heath Taylor (10th round). Chip Heuser Jessica Eldridge made a clean sweep of All- America honors with her award in the 1500 after earning the honor in cross country and indoor track earlier in the year. The men's team won its first Big 12 Championship, the first conference title for OU in 29 years, and NCAA Midwest Region titles. 13 22 QUESTIONS Joe AND Wa ington ANSWERS WITH One of the greatest players in the tradition-rich history of Oklahoma Football has returned to Norman. The three-time All-American running back now turns his focus from touchdowns to his new position as Special Assistant to the Athletics Director and Executive Director of the Varsity O Association. As Executive Director, what are your primary goals for the Varsity O Association? We need to increase the number of letterwinners participating in events and the number of letterwinners in our database. We will continue to increase voluntary support and emphasize our post eligibility scholarship program. Finally, we will continue to provide more benefits and reasons for the letterwinners to participate. In the effort to build and strengthen the Association, what are some of the special events that will involve and engage all OU letterwinners? While the football program, including the OU- Texas weekend, and events around those activities are a primary emphasis, we want to enhance and expand events scheduled around all of the sports, whether home or away participation. In what ways will your first year measure success? It is important that we have complete contact information on letterwinners and that we continue to add our new graduates to that database with accurate information. We are going to do our very best job in making sure people know what events are scheduled, what activities are planned. We believe if we can get people to come back to campus for one Varsity O Association event that they will continue to return. Our focus will be to make sure everyone has the information they need to stay current with OU. Individual circumstances may keep some people from returning but they will have the information about what s happening here at OU. What was it about the University of Oklahoma that influenced your return to Norman to accept the Varsity O Executive Director position? As a student-athlete, I came to OU to be a part of continuing a great tradition and that is why I returned. I look forward to having the same impact on this department that my 1972 class had on the Sooner football program. OU ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT WINS 2007 PRISM AWARD The University of Oklahoma Athletics Department was honored nationally as recipient of the 2007 PRISM Award for Division IA collegiate athletics programs, which recognizes colleges for managerial excellence. The PRISM (Professionalism, Results and Innovation in Sport Management) Awards recognize colleges for managerial excellence across five areas: advancement and management of constituent relationships; student-athlete development; fundraisingdevelopment strategies, innovative marketing and employee development. STAFF AWARDS AND HONORS Volleyball - Head Coach Santiago Restrepo was named National Coach of the Year by Collegiate Volleyball Update, as well as Big 12 Coach of the Year and the Central Region Coach of the Year. Football - Head Coach Bob Stoops was named Big 12 Coach of the Year. Stoops also won Big 12 Coach of the year honors from his peers in 2000 and He has led the Sooners to four Big 12 titles. Men s Gymnastics - Head Coach Mark Williams was named Mountain Pacific Sports This award is a great tribute to the emphasis that the OU Athletics Department places on putting the student first and on its partnership with academic programs, said University of Oklahoma President David L. Boren. The University of Oklahoma is thrilled and grateful to be selected as the recipient of this prestigious award, added Joe Castiglione, OU s Director of Athletics. We want to express our sincere gratitude to the University of Massachusetts and its nationally recognized sports management program for this significant recognition. Many of the key elements the PRISM Award measures are reflected in our strategic plan, the blueprint for all of our decisions. Achievements of this caliber are a direct result of the hard work and commitment of our talented staff. The University of Oklahoma is synonymous with success and a pursuit of excellence. From (L to R): Gerald Gurney, Casey Bookout, Connie Dillion, Sul H. Lee, Joe Castiglione, Amanda Horvath, Jon Denio, Deren Boyd Federation Coach of the Year. Williams earned Coach of the Year honors for the seventh time in his eight seasons as Oklahoma s head coach. Track and Field - Head coach Martin Smith was named the Big 12 and Midwest Region Men s Coach of the Year. Assistants Dana Boone (men s sprints/hurdles) and Jeremy Fischer (jumps) were named regional assistant coaches of the year. Academics - Dr. Nicki Moore recognized as the 2007 N4A Professional Promise Award While our student-athletes and coaches rightfully get most of the attention, it requires a total commitment from every member of the department staff to create the best opportunities for our athletes and coaches to succeed. It also requires a strong president and a supportive campus community, Castiglione added. Among the highlights of the University of Oklahoma s winning PRISM submission were its innovative partnership between its athletic department and the OU Libraries, its Sooner Stilettos program, its groundbreaking PROS (Psychological Resources for OU Student-Athletes) program, and its commitment to diversity training of its employees. The partnership with OU Libraries is, in the words of Dean Sul H. Lee, unprecedented. A partnership that has thrived since 2002, the Athletics Department has been a major contributor to fund-raising efforts for the OU Libraries. The athletics department makes an annual contribution to the OU Libraries endowment fund. After an initial lead gift of $250,000, the department has continued to contribute, helping the OU Libraries build a million dollar endowment. The commitment was the first in the United States in which a major university athletics program sponsored an endowment of this amount to promote reading and research as a way to improve academic achievement. winner by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics. Academics - Dr. Gerald Gurney named as the winner of the 2006 Lan Hewlett Award from the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics. Athletics Ticket Office - Named Innovator of the Year by Paciolan for inventive and visionary technological advances, including the Sooner Loyalty Program and ongoing implementation of student attendance programs. 23
