1 STANDING COMMITTEES A 4 Academic and Student Affairs Committee Intercollegiate Athletics Report on Academic & Student Services INFORMATION For information only. BACKGROUND This is an annual informational presentation to the Board of Regents providing an overview of Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) efforts and results in the Student- Athlete Academic Services (SAAS) program. The Board was last updated on this topic in January The presentation will provide a very brief report of academic progress and benchmarks of University of Washington student-athletes including NCAA Academic Progress Rates, NCAA Graduation Rates, and team grade point averages. In addition, current initiatives and programs will be shared. The presentation will focus on the student-athlete academic and athletic experience at UW and student-athletes will share their stories with the Board. 3 GRADUATION & ACADEMIC RESULTS Graduation Success Rate: The NCAA measure of graduation rate within a six year window from initial full-time enrollment including transfers. 4 GRADUATION & ACADEMIC RESULTS Academic Progress Rate: A team-based metric that accounts for eligibility and retention of each student-athlete each term. Perfect score is A score of 930 or below is considered below the NCAA minimum threshold and subject to NCAA penalty. UW s NCAA Academic Progress Rate:» Four UW teams were #1 in the Pac-12 Conference: Women s Cross Country, Women s Golf Women s Rowing, and Women s Tennis.» Perfect 1000 score for Women s Cross Country, Women s Golf, Women s Tennis (NCAA National Recognition).» Football (984) is 2nd in the conference behind Stanford (985).» Men s Basketball (986) is 4th in the conference behind Stanford (1000), Utah/Arizona State (990).» All UW teams are above a 970 Academic Progress Rate.» Lowest teams are Men s Golf (970) and Beach Volleyball (983). 8 University of Washington Student-Athlete Bios ONYIE CHIBUOGWU WOMEN S TRACK & FIELD SENIOR Onyie Chibuogwu is from Seattle and is a hammer and discus thrower on the UW Women s Track & Field team. She is the current school record holder and current Pac-12 runner up in the hammer throw. Onyie is a Political Economy major with a 3.22 cum gpa. She is most proud of the fact that she made the Dean s List every quarter during her junior year after struggling her first two years at UW. Onyie is an active member and leader of UW s Black Student-Athlete Group and recently attended the national Black Student-Athlete Summit at the University of Texas. She is a member of the Washington Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (WSAAC) and a member of the 2017 Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention team. A-4.2/ ATTACHMENT 2 Page 1 of 3
9 SAM KOKOSKA WOMEN S SOCCER JUNIOR Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Samantha (Sam) Kokoska is a junior on the Husky women s soccer team. Sam started her collegiate career at UCLA but transferred to UW after her freshman year. She is a Bioengineering major with a 3.95 cum gpa and a 2017 Pac-12 All- Academic First Team member. Sam volunteers at the UW Medical Center, Seattle Children s Hospital and the UW Farm. She is also a College of Engineering peer mentor. She manages to do all this and also contribute to UW s success on the soccer field. Her career goal is to apply science to improve lives. A-4.2/ Page 2 of 3
10 CHANNING NESBITT BASEBALL SENIOR Channing Nesbitt is a senior pitcher on our baseball team. Originally from Oakland, California and Bishop O Dowd high school, Channing has made the most of his UW experience. He maintains a 3.47 cum gpa in Political Science & Economics and is pursuing graduate school in Public Policy or Law. Channing is the co-director of the UW Athletics Black Student-Athlete Group and has represented UW at the NCAA National Leadership Forum. He is an Arthur Ashe Scholar-Athlete award winner and serves on the Washington Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (WSAAC). This past summer, he interned at the King County Prosecuting Attorney s office. Committed to community service, Channing has served as a 4C Coalition mentor in Seattle and Youth Quake NOLA community volunteer in New Orleans, Louisiana. Finally, he will be headed to West Point this month to represent UW at the National Conference on Ethics in America (NCEA). A-4.2/ Page 3 of 3
