3 OKLAHOMA CoSida Academic All-Americans DIRECTOR S LETTER JOE CASTIGLIONE Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Programs Director of Athletics DEPARTMENT OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS A year ago as I reflected on the academic year and our student-athletes performances in competition and in the classroom, I knew we had just experienced a very special year, one where Sooner Magic was everywhere. Little did I know those results were just an appetizer for the year that would follow. The recently completed academic year has added more chapters to the story of Sooner Magic, a tale that none of us ever tire of hearing. The Sooners produced three national champions as the men s gymnastics brought home the top honor for a 10th time. The softball team won its third NCAA title and the women s gymnastics team celebrated its second title. The Sooners became the first program to win a men s and women s NCAA title in the same year in competition history. OU was named the Best in College Sports by CBS Sports. Many schools win titles the Sooners do it with regularity and that consistency has led to seven consecutive top-25 finishes in the Learfield Director s Cup. We added four conference titles football, men s and women s gymnastics and softball and six teams finished in the top 10 for their sports. The football program became the first of six teams to finish the year in the final four of their sport when it was named to the College Football Playoff after a ninth Big 12 title. Men s tennis repeated as the NCAA runner-up, men s basketball ended its magical postseason run in the Final Four and men s golf advanced to NCAA match play for the first time in school history. That spirit of excellence went well beyond competition. Your Sooner student-athletes had a ninth consecutive semester of a cumulative GPA at 3.00 or higher. The 3.06 GPA for fall 2015 and spring 2016 tied the all-time best mark for a single semester. TY DARLINGTON FOOTBALL PAIGE PARKER SOFTBALL ACADEMICS Sooner student-athletes received several of the most prestigious awards available. Football player Ty Darlington became OU s first winner of the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded to college football s best scholar-athlete; the Wuerffel Trophy, college football s premier award for community service, and was named a CoSIDA first-team Academic All-American for the second year in a row. Men s basketball player C.J. Cole was presented with the NCAA s Elite 90 Award for achieving the highest GPA (3.95 in chemical biosciences) among student-athletes participating at this year s Final Four. Buddy Hield, the consensus Player of the Year in men s basketball, was named the Big 12 s Male Sportsperson of the Year, then added the Big 12 s Male Athlete of the Year a few weeks later. Paige Parker made it a Sooner sweep, a first for OU, when she was named the conference s female athlete of the year. Eric Striker became the first OU student to receive the Otis Sullivant Award for perceptivity for the manner in which he opened new dialogue on campus following a racially insensitive incident and how he has helped the entire university community during the healing process. Jenny Carmichael, from the Sooner track and field team, became the first Sooner studentathlete to be named to the Homecoming Court and to be named Outstanding Senior Woman. MARISSA BEENE ROWING BRANDON DOUGHTY TRACK & FIELD GRADUATION RATES OU achieved a record-high Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 84%, an improvement from 72% just three years ago. OU s GSR exceeds the Division I national average of 83%. OU s most recent single-year student-athlete federal graduation rate of 70% exceeds the student body federal rate of 67%. ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Student-athletes collectively earned a 3.06 cumulative GPA in both fall 2015 and spring 2016, tying the school record and extending its streak to a ninth consecutive semester with a cumulative GPA above A record 16 of 19 sport programs earned a cumulative GPA above 3.00 in the spring 2016 semester. We are proving that Sooner Magic is in our DNA, and we do not take lightly our responsibility to continue to demonstrate that commitment to excellence. Our core values help us bring Sooner Magic to everything we do. It is important to remind ourselves about the Magic we experience every day, Magic that we enjoy sharing with you when you are in the crowd and through the stories you will find in this report. We are strong in our resolve to develop leaders and inspire champions through the Sooner Magic we create. We thank you for joining in our magical journey and celebrating the reality that There is Only One Oklahoma! 4 OUR STUDENT-ATHLETES ANNUAL REPORT SOONERSPORTS.COM OUR STUDENT-ATHLETES 5
