The team checks in at #11 in the latest Intermat dual rankings and #10 in the tournament index. The seven ranked Illini is the most since November 23, *Langenderfer's No. 12 ranking is tied for the highest of his career. The redshirt junior was last ranked No. 12 prior to the 2015 NCAA Championships. Lagnenderfer currently holds a six-match win streak dating abck to Jan 8. *With wins over ranked opponents by Kyle Langenderfer (No. 6 Josh Shields) and Isaiah Martinez (No. 9 Anthony Valencia), the Illini have tallied 15 wins over ranked foes this season, including eight over higher-ranked wrestlers. *Zane Richards is one win shy of becoming the 23rd Illini wrestler to reach the century mark in their career. Richards earned his 99th career victory on Sunday with an 18-1 technical fall of Ted Rico (ASU). *Zac Brunson entered the Illinois' all-time wins list with a 3-2 upset victory over No. 8 Myles Amine (Michigan) on Friday, January 20. His 97 career victories ranks 25th in Illinois history. *Isaiah Martinez officially qualified for Illinois all-time win percentage record, overtaking Matt Lackey (0.896) with his record of 86-1 (.989). Lackey tallied 120 wins in 134 matches for a win-percentage from Zane Richards (99-22) sits in 10th place on the all-time win-percentage list with a.818 mark. *Zac Brunson has tied his win total from last season (22). Brunson's single-season high came in when he won 29 matches as a redshirt sophomore. NO. 11 ILLINOIS TRAVELS TO NORTHWESTERN FRIDAY, HOSTS PURDUE SUNDAY. The Fighting Illini grapplers will look to continue their current four-match win streak as they travel to Evanston to wrestle Northwestern at 7 p.m. Friday before returning to Huff Hall for a Sunday dual against Purdue at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live on BTN Plus and in the BTN2Go app, while live scoring will be available through TrackWrestling. 2 NORTHWESTERN SERIES HISTORY: ILL LEADS The Fighting Illini will be seeking their sixth straight win on Friday in Evanston, as the Illini have not lost to Northwestern since January 14, 2011 when the 22nd-ranked Wildcats defeated the Illini at Welsh Ryan Arena. Last year, the Orange and Blue earned their most thrilling victory against their in-state rivals. After Northwestern jumped out to an 18-0 lead, Illinois responded with a 19-0 run of their own to lead the dual entering the 197-pound. The Wildcats retook the lead with a pin by Jacob Berkowitz. The Illini needed a pin from Brooks Black to win the match, and the Illini redshirt sophomore delivered, pinning Conan Jennings in 1:35 to win the dual for the Illini. PURDUE SERIES HISTORY: ILL LEADS On Sunday, It will be two days shy of three years since the Illini and Boilermakers last dueled, an Illinois victory in West Lafayette on February 7, Ranked 15th at the time, redshirt freshman Zac Brunson won by a 6-2 decision against Alex Griffin at 157 pounds. At home, the Illini are against the Boilers, including only one home loss to Purdue in the last 20 years. ILLINI TO WATCH No. 1 Isaiah Martinez While the weight class and opponents are new, the two-time Big Ten and NCAA champion remains much the same. 19 matches into his first season at 165 pounds, Martinez's stat line continues to look much the same. The redshirt junior leads the Illini in technical falls (8), dual team points (34), dual points average (16.8) and has also tallied four pins, surpassing his three from last season. A perfect 19-0, Martinez has five wins over ranked opponents, highlighted by a 3-1 decision over No. 2 Logan Massa (Michigan) on January 20. For his career, Martinez is 86-1 entering Friday's dual at Northwestern, the best win-percentage by an Illini wrestler with at least 75 career matches. 12 career wins behind former Illini Carl Perry (98), Martinez will have a chance to enter the Illinois all-time wins list before season's end. Additionally, the Lemoore, California native is seeking to become the first Illini to win three NCAA titles and the first to win an NCAA title at Match Notes two different weight classes. No. 12 Kyle Langenderfer Illinois' biggest bounceback season has come from 157-pounder Kyle Langenderfer. Since moving up from 149 pounds last season, where he finished with a record of 7-14, Langenderfer is 18-4 so far in and holds his highest ranking (No. 12) since also being tabbed No. 12 after placing third at 2015 Big Ten Championships. Langenderfer has earned his move into the rankings with six consecutive victories, including top-10 wins over No. 9 Brian Murphy (Michigan) and No. 6 Josh Shields (Arizona State). Statistically, Langenderfer entered the weekend with the second-most dual team points (25), tied for the second-most pins (4) and is tied for third on the team in individual dual points per match (9.1). No. 12 Emery Parker After twice filling in for an injured Zac Brunson last season, the redshirt sophomore has made a statement in his first full year in the starting lineup. Tied for the team lead in wins (22) this season, Parker has boasts the wins by major decision or greater (17) and is third on the team in both dual team poins (24) and individual dual points per match (9.1). Ranked for the first time on December 6 (No. 15), the Parker has moved up to No. 12 after upset victories against No. 13 Jordan Ellingwood (Central Michigan) and No. 11 Nicholas Gravina (Rutgers). BRUNSON JOINS RICHARDS ON ALL-TIME WINS LIST With a 3-2 upset of No. 8 Myles Amine on Jan. 20, Zac Brunson entered Illinois' all-time wins list with his 96th career victory. Tied with Nate Patrick, Brunson joins fellow classmate Zane Richards (99) on the list. Richards passed Carl Perry with his technical fall of Ted Rico (ASU) on Jan. 29. Wrestler Years Wins 1. Upon entering the list, the Illini redshirt junior took over as the record holder with a current win percentage of.988. Richards also ranks in the top-15 of the list with a.814 percentage. The No. 12 ranking ties the Illini redshirt junior's highest of his career, the first since taking third at 2015 Big Ten Championships. The Mokena, Illinois product is 18-4 overall this season, including a six-match winning streak that dates back to January 8 at Maryland. PINNING IT DOWN Zac Brunson continues to move closer to joining the school's all-time career pins list. After scoring his sixth pin of the season against Maryland's Sam Rowell, Brunson is two pins away from entering the top-10 on Illinois' all-time list. With six this season, Brunson has 18 for his career, two behind No. 10 Troy Tirapelle ( ) who finished his career with 20. Tony Dallago owns the school record with 40 pins from MARTINEZ WINS SECOND MIDLANDS TITLE 165-pounder Isaiah Martinez became just the third Illini to win multiple Midlands individual titles during their Illinois careers. Martinez 10-6 decision over #9 Chad Walsh of Rider made him just the second Illini to win the tournament twice, joining Mike Poeta ( ) and Alex Tirapelle (2003 & 2005). 3 (2nd) and Zac Brunson (3rd) also placed, as the Illini finished fifth as a team. NO. 10 ILLINI TAME COUGARS, IIllinois wrestling strung together three straight victories to start the dual, and four more to close out the dual, as the Illini defeated Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, on December 7 at the Jon Davis Center. Redshirt juniors Isaiah Martinez (6-0) and Kyle Langenderfer (10-1) bookended the match with a pair of pins to lead the 11th-ranked Illini in their first dual meet of the season. MARTINEZ AND BLACK STELLAR IN RETURN No. 1 Isaiah Martinez and No. 8 Brooks Black proved dominant in their season-debut at the UNI Open, joining Emery Parker with individual titles. Martinez cruised through the opening four rounds before defeating No. 3 Daniel Lewis (Missouri) 7-4 in the 165-pound final. Black scored bonus points in two matches and won by decision, 6-1, over Minnesota's Rylee Streifel in the final. COACH HEFFERNAN INKS TWO TO CLASS OF 2017 Illinois Wrestling Head Coach Jim Heffernan finalized two national letters of intent Monday afternoon, as the program will welcome 125-pounder Justin Mejia and 165-pounder Johnny Mologousis for the season. Both signees have Illini ties, as Mejia wrestles under Illinois all-time wins leader, Adam Tirapelle at Clovis High School and Mologousis is coached by All-American Griff Powell at Lyons Township High School. #10 ILLINI TALLY FOUR INDIVIDUAL TITLES AT KAUFMAN BRAND OPEN Four Fighting Illini wrestlers won individual crowns, as Head Coach Jim Heffernan's squad began the season at the Kaufman Brand Open in St. Louis, Missouri. Zane Richards (133), Zac Brunson (174), Brock Ervin (149) and Emery Parker (184) each won their respective weight class brackets to pace the Illini. True freshman Wesley Kibler also took home an individual crown, as the St. Joseph, Illinois native won the 197-pound amateur bracket. B.J. FUTRELL WINS 65KG TITLE AT BILL FARRELL; KENNEDY DEFEATS MARTINEZ IN 70KG SEMIS Former Illini wrestler B.J. Futrell won the 65kg/143lbs weight division at the Bill Farrell Open, defeating former Ohio State wrestler Hunter Stieber in the gold medal match, Also competing at Bill Farrell was current Illini Isaiah Martinez and former Illini Jimmy Kennedy. Kennedy defeated Martinez in the semifinal Match Notes round by a 10-9 decision before dropping the tournament final to Jordan Oliver. RICHARDS, BRUNSON WIN AT ALL-STAR CLASSIC Fighting Illini wrestlers earned a sweep of their two matches at the 51st annual All-Star Classic in Cleveland, Ohio, as seniors Zane Richards (133) and Zac Brunson (174) each earned decisions. Richards defeated Nebraska's Eric Montoya by a decision of 9-7, while Brunson took down Ethan Ramos of North Carolina by decision, 5-4. The two victories improve the all-time mark by Illinois wrestlers at the Classic to FORMER HEAD COACH MARK JOHNSON HONORED BY VARSITY "I" The Varsity "I" Association also will induct Mark Johnson as an honorary member for his longstanding loyalty, service and contributions to Illinois athletics. Retiring in 2009, Johnson is the most successful wrestling coach in program history, coaching seven individual national champions and 45 All-Americans, as well as winning the 2005 Big Ten team title. LINDSEY DURLACHER ENTERS GRECO-ROMAN HALL OF CHAMPIONS Former Fighting Illini wrestling Lindsey Durlacher was inducted into the Alan and Gloria Rice Greco- Roman Hall of Champions on Saturday, October 22. Durlacher was a two-time All-American at Illinois and a bronze medalist at the 2006 World Championships in Guangzhou, China. He was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame in ILLINI HOST INDIANA ON BTN FEB. 12 The Fighting Illini will make their lone dual meet appearance on the Big Ten Network on Sunday, February 12 when they host Indiana at 3 p.m. The meet is the regular season finale for the Orange and Blue and will serve as senior day for Zane Richards, Zac Brunson and Bill Barbour. ILLINI SET PROMOTIONAL SCHEDULE Illinois wrestling will host a number of promotions across their five home dual meets this season, beginning with the annual Great Escape on January 20 vs. Michigan. Prior to the match against the Wolverines, kids can participate in the youth clinic, led by Fighting Illini athletes and coaches. Other promotions include Hometown Heroes (Jan. 22), Wrestlemania (Jan. 27), Take Down Cancer (Feb. 5) and senior day (Feb. 12). MARTINEZ SEEKS HISTORY AT NEW WEIGHT CLASS Moving up to 165 pounds this year, two-time NCAA champion Isaiah Martinez will seek to become the first Illini ever to win three NCAA titles, as well as the first Illini to win titles at two different weight classes. The Leemore, California native enters the season 67-1, his only blemish coming to Jason Nolf of Penn State back on January 23, 2016 at Huff Hall. Martinez later avenged his loss to Nolf with victories over the Penn State wrestler in the Big Ten Championships final and NCAA Championships final University of Illinois Wrestling Notes // 3

4 JIM HEFFERNAN HEAD COACH 8TH SEASON (23RD OVERALL) Jim Heffernan begins his eighth season as head coach after serving as the top assistant under Mark Johnson for 19 years - 17 at Illinois and two at Oregon State. During Heffernan s time in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois has finished in the top-10 at the NCAA championships on 13 occasions, and in the top-15 in 17 of the last 19 seasons. Heffernan has been a major factor in the renaissance of the Illinois wrestling program, helping lead the team to its greatest prosperity since the post- World War II era, including a Big Ten title in 2005 and four Midlands team crowns. Heffernan has also mentored nine individual national champions in the last 18 seasons. In 2015, 157-pounder Isaiah Martinez (157) joined Jesse Delgado (125), Matt Lackey(165), Adam Tirapelle (149, 2001), John Lockhart (heavyweight, 2001), Carl Perry (141, 2000), Eric Siebert (150, 1998), Ernest Benion, Jr. (158, 1995) and Steve Marianetti (150, 1995) in earning NCAA titles since Heffernan has also guided the Illini to record-setting performances. In 2015, Heffernan guided Isaiah Martinez to the first undefeated season (35-0) by a freshman since Cael Sanderson did so in 1999 at Iowa State. In 2014, Tony Dallago became the Illinois alltime leader in career pins (40), while Alex Tirapelle set the school record for career wins (128). As a team, the Illini set the school record for dual victories in a season (16) in In 2005, Heffernan assisted Illinois in bringing home its first Big Ten Conference tournament championship in 53 years, as Alex Tirapelle (157) and Friedl (174) took home individual league crowns out of five total finalists for the Illini. For the second season in a row, the Illini won the Big Ten regular-season dual meet title with a near-perfect record. The team finished sixth at the national tournament after qualifying nine wrestlers, while 125-pounder Ott made a repeat appearance in the finals. The team matched 2004 s achievement of five All-Americans in Ott (2nd, 125), Mark Jayne (7th, 133), Cassio Pero (7th, 141), Friedl (4th, 174) and Brian Glynn (3rd, 184).
