8 LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITIES No activities accomplished during this reporting period. TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES PROJECT # 1: RIGHT TURN ARROW ANALYSIS: Purpose: Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of exclusive right-turn arrow overlap phases for existing right-turn lanes at existing signalized intersections, and compare measured delay to estimated delay. The project leader was Paul Basha. Results: The field data collection was finished; however, the final report was never completed. Initial findings were presented at the Spring Conference Technical Committee Session. PROJECT # 2: GUIDELINES FOR SIGNING AND MARKING OF NON 15 MPH SCHOOL ZONES: Purpose: The purpose of this project was to document Best Practices in Arizona for non-15 mph School Zones. The project leaders were Debbie Albert and Jennifer Bohac. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to 19 different public agencies throughout the state. The best practices information will be helpful in developing Safe Routes to School programs and developing some consistency for non-15 mph school zone treatments amongst agencies. Results: (19) public agencies were invited to take the survey through Zommerang and (10) responded. There was a good representation of large and small agencies. The results were presented at the Spring Conference Technical Committee Session. PROJECT # 3: ACCESSIBLE PEDESTRIAN SIGNALS: Purpose: The purpose of this project was to document Best Practices in the use and installation of accessible pedestrian signal (APS) push buttons for low vision users throughout the nation and provide guidance for local agencies and design engineers on their installation. Results: A summary and demonstration of APS installation and design was presented at the Spring Conference Technical Committee Session. PROJECT # 4: SPRING CONFERENCE TECHNICAL COMMITTEE SESSION: Purpose: Jennifer Bohac led an effort to sponsor a Technical Committee Session for the ITE/IMSA Spring Conference. The student chapter held a total of seven meetings and hosted three guest lectures. In addition, the students also hosted several webinars on campus as fund raising events that contributed to the general fund. The students prepared several data collection proposals and collected 12-hour pedestrian counts at the intersection of Mill Avenue and University Drive. At the end of 2009, the ASU-ITE Student Chapter boasted 23 members on its roster. The Arizona Section of ITE held their joint meeting with ASU in April 2009, and held their joint meeting with the University of Arizona in October UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONASTUDENT CHAPTER ACTIVITIES: The student chapter had a total of 17 student chapter meetings, including 8 with guest speakers from the transportation engineering and planning community in Tucson. The student chapter also participated as volunteers in the annual bike count conducted by the Pima Association of Governments. In addition, the chapter assisted in collecting data for a Safe Routes to School evaluation being conducted by the Pima County Department of Transportation, through a local consultant. The student chapter had a total of 24 members at the conclusion of AWARDS PRESENTED DURING THIS REPORTING PERIOD Our past President, Paul Porell, received the Past President s Appreciation Award.
