1 Newsletter Date Volume 1, Issue 1 Upcoming Events PMI Northern Utah Chapter Quarterly Newsletter: Q3 President s Message Presidents Message Finish Strong The kids are back in school, summer vacations are wrapping up, and the weather has finally started to cool off. Time to get refocused on your end of year training and certification goals for With the PMP exam changing again in early 2018 to align with the new PMBOK 6 th edition our PMP exam prep classes have been filling up quickly. Our final public class for 2017 is starting September 9 th and will be your last opportunity to sit in one of our classes before the end of the year. Hurry and register now because seats are filling up quickly for this final class. We do still have time this fall to schedule private PMP classes at your facility, if you are interested in a private class please get with me for more details. If you are looking for additional certifications or training our full fall training schedule has now been published on our website and includes classes in ACP, PBA, CAPM, CSM, CSPO, as well as some soft skill workshops. If you have any questions about our upcoming training please feel free to contact me or any of the board members for more details. The chapter s 20 year anniversary celebration is still going strong. If you are not yet a member of the chapter, there is no better time to join than while our chapter dues remain at $0. This special is also available to any current members that are renewing their memberships this fall but our anniversary special membership pricing will expire on December 31 st so join or renew today. If you have questions about membership or how to join our chapter please contact Jessica at membership@projectmanager.org So far our growth in 2017 has been phenomenal and it brings me great joy to know that so many people are finding value in being associated with our chapter, but with this growth comes opportunity. We currently have several immediate needs for volunteers to help with different roles with varying levels of time commitments. To wrap up, I would like to say a big thank you to each of our members, sponsors, and volunteers for your hard work and dedication to our chapter. As you may have heard we have been nominated for the North American chapter of the year award, and most recently we were notified that we have advanced to the top three finalists. This award, and the recognition our chapter is receiving, would not have been possible without the role each of you play in our chapter and our local project management community. The winner will be announced on October 28 and we will be eager to share these results with you. 4 Newsletter Date Volume 1, Issue 1 PMO & Project of the Year Awards PMO and Project of the Year Awards To recognize the skills and accomplishments of our chapter members, we are holding the first annual PMI Northern Utah Chapter professional development awards. This includes the PMO of the Year and Project of the Year competitions. Judging criteria, submission guidelines, and application forms are available at on the Awards page. Completed nomination forms can be submitted to awards@projectmanager.org. Submissions can be made any time between September 1, 2017 and March 1, Winners will receive free attendance for 3 to all PMI Northern Utah Chapter events (other than exam prep classes) for a year and a special lunch for all members of their PMO or project team. 5 Newsletter Date Volume 1, Issue 1 Mayte s Corner...Thoughts on Project Management Snakes & Ladders and Gantt Charts by Mayte Mata Sivera, PMP Commonly used in project management, the Gantt Chart is one of the most popular and useful ways of showing activities (tasks or events) displayed against time. Gantt Chart History Henry Gantt, (May 20, 1861 November 23, 1919) was an American engineer and consultant. Some references explain that it was Henry who created the chart in 1910, but looking further back in history, the first Gantt chart was devised in the mid1890s and can be found in the Karol Adamiecki (March 18, 1866 May 16, 1933) publications. Karol Adamiecki was a Polish engineer who ran a steelworks company in southern Poland and had become interested in management ideas and techniques. However, Adamiecki published his works in the Polish and Russian languages, and due to this fact, his charts didn t quite reach the popularity that Henry Gantt s did in western countries. What is a Gantt Chart? Basically a Gantt chart is a horizontal bar chart that illustrates the project schedule. On the left of the chart, is the list of the activities and on the top is the time scale. A bar represents each activity. This set up will allow us to see The activities that we are tracking When each activity will start/end and how long it is Overlapping between tasks and Start and End of the whole project. Creating Gantt Charts In today's world, Gantt charts are usually created by computer applications, such as Microsoft Project, Primavera Project Planner, and others. There are a lot of YouTube videos, books, manuals and courses that will teach you how to use those applications. How to Present Gantt Charts to Your Stakeholders So here we are! There are hundreds of publications about how to improve our skills using these tools, but nobody has told you the most important part about using the Gantt chart which is: Be Careful When You Present This Kind of Information. Not everyone knows or gets the beauty of the Gantt. Because of this Don t make assumptions. Not all of your stakeholders know what a Gantt chart is you made need to provide some education around this. When you plan a meeting, take into consideration who is invited before preparing the slide about schedules Simplify 5

6 Newsletter Date Volume 1, Issue 1 PMBOK Changes: Coming September 6th, 2017 (From the PMI Website) By Project Managers, For Project Managers A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) Sixth Edition is the latest version of this leading global resource for project managers. The PMBOK Guide is developed by active practitioners and subject matter experts, then reviewed by the project management community before it is released, to assure it always reflects the current state of the profession. In response to market research and customer input, information on agile will now be included. Why is the PMBOK Guide changing? Project Management has evolved significantly since we published the PMBOK Guide Fifth Edition in Part 2 of the PMBOK Guide is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and must be updated every four to five years. PMI continually learns more about what drives successful project outcomes through our research and we want to share those drivers with the project management community. What to expect The PMBOK Guide Sixth Edition (in English) will be available in print and digital formats on 6 September. Translations in 11 additional languages will be available in print in October. PMI members can download digital copies of English and all translated versions on 6 September. What s new? A section on the role of the project manager. Two renamed knowledge areas Project Schedule Management Project Resource Management Four new sections in each knowledge area Key Concepts Trends and Emerging Practices Tailoring Considerations Considerations for Agile/Adaptive Environments Greater emphasis on strategic and business knowledge, with a discussion of project management business documents. A new section on the role of the project manager, including the PMI Talent Triangle technical, leadership and strategic and business management. An appendix on agile practices. This is a great opportunity to register for the PMP Prep Class that begins September 9, 2017 from 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. at the Salt Lake Community College Larry H Miller Center. There is currently a shortage of workers and some jobs are behind because concrete can t get there soon enough. 7
