3 Greetings! Welcome to the 2018 Education Summit for All First Generation, African American, Latino, Asian American, Native American and Pacific Islander Students. This longstanding educational outreach effort is sponsored by the Alameda County Office of Education, Contra Costa County Office of Education, Chabot College, College of Alameda, Laney College, Las Positas College, Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, California State University, Maritime Academy and California State University, East Bay. Our goal is to increase the number of African American, Asian American, Latino, Native American, Pacific Islander, and First Generation students who go to college. As education leaders and supporters serving the East Bay region, we know that our work must reflect the diversity of the communities served by our institutions. We are committed to improving access to higher education for all students and ensuring that underrepresented students complete programs successfully, graduate from college, and become productive members of their communities and the next generation of leaders. Now more than ever, students and parents need assistance to understand the landscape of options and strategies to navigate the system. The current financial situation in California means a more competitive environment for students who are headed to college. However, a college education is still accessible. This Summit will provide resources and information to help students and families learn about the process and a timeline for gathering information about college opportunities and how to put a successful plan in action, including: Strategies for successful application; including how to find the right school fit, college entry requirements, and important application deadlines How to evaluate postsecondary educational options (four-year colleges and universities, two-year junior and community colleges) to choose which option is best for you The costs associated with attending college, financial aid options (grants, loans, scholarships and work-study), and the importance of planning ahead How to navigate the enrollment and college transition process, including exploring career options, selecting a program that meets your needs, and identifying resources on campus to help you reach your academic goals Please attend as many workshops as possible and talk to the many educational representatives who are here to assist and help you. Make the most of your visit by learning as much as you possibly can! We extend our best wishes to you and your family, and we hope you enjoy the day. Sincerely, Dr. Leroy M. Morishita President, California State University, East Bay Mr. Thomas A. Cropper President, California State University, Maritime Academy Dr. Jowel C.
