7 Welcome VAG members to this whirlwind tour of the early architecture of New England, the Delaware Valley, and the Chesapeake. For the next ten days you will see a lot of the landmarks as well as some more obscure representatives of the vernacular architecture of early America. When David Martin and John Walker asked me at the spring meeting in Keele in 2000 to think about putting together a program for the 50 th anniversary of the VAG, I welcomed the opportunity knowing it would take awhile for the group to figure out exactly when that auspicious occasion would actually occur. What seemed like a vague promise rapidly matured into reality as the date of the tour was set and I set about recruiting North American VAG members and my colleagues in the Vernacular Architecture Forum to help put together the following program. Fortunately, I was able to recruit early on Claire Dempsey to plan and organize the New England leg of the trip. I owe a great deal to her good natured fortitude. Naturally, I was eager to get Abbott Cummings on board since he has had close connections with a number of VAG members over the years. Others who have been extremely helpful in this endeavor either by open buildings, making calls, or allowing us to reprint their write-up of sites include Anne A. Grady, Myron Stachiw, William Flynt, Steven Tyson, Tom Paske, and Richard Candee. You will meet some of them at various sites. Greg Huber kindly arranged for our visit to the Bronck House in the Hudson Valley. In the Delaware Valley, Bernie Herman, another VAG member, organized students at the University of Delaware and friends to put on a day of visits in New Castle and Chester County, Pennsylvania. Thanks also to Jeffrey Klee, Jeroen van den Hurk, and Peg Jones for their work in arranging the tours in this area. Orlando Ridout V, Michael Bourne, and Peter Kurtze helped coordinate the schedule of buildings that we will visit in Maryland. Finally, I owe a debt to my colleagues at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for making the calls, leading tours, and writing up the buildings in Virginia. I would like to specially thank VAG member Cary Carson for helping with the logistics of the Williamsburg tour and for introducing me to the VAG more than twenty-five years ago. My colleagues Willie Graham and Edward Chappell and former colleague Mark Wenger wrote many of the guidebook entries along with Camille Wells. I am especially pleased that Jeff Klee is now the newest member of the Department of Architectural Research. Along with the aid of Billie Graham, Jeff put the guidebook together as well as served as a useful sounding board for ideas about houses to visit and dining opportunities in the hinterlands. We welcome his steady hand. As always no such tour could be possible without the generosity of homeowners, museums, historical agencies, and others who have opened their buildings for our inspection. I would like to thank them all for their hospitality and appreciate their allowing us to crawl in dark places and inspect undusted corners.
