8 The Northeast: What State Is It? Here is some information about a state in the Northeast region. Read it carefully. Circle all the clues you find. Then write the name of the state on the line below. This is the smallest state in the United States. It has an area of just 1,545 square miles. From north to south, it is 48 miles long. From east to west, it is 37 miles wide. This state is known for many firsts. Colonists here took the first military action against England. The first British troops sent to end the revolution landed here. This colony was the first to declare independence. The Industrial Revolution in America started here in Today, this state is popular for vacations. Boaters and fishermen come to enjoy the ocean. Others come to look at famous mansions. 9 A Trip to New Hampshire You are planning a trip to New Hampshire. Choose the three descriptions below that you find most interesting. Circle their names on the map. Choose one of these three sites as your starting point. Use a colored pencil to show the route you would take to visit all three. Mount Washington is the highest peak in New England. It is also the windiest place in the world. Many people hike to the top, drive up the winding switchback road, or take the famous cog railway. Visit the Saint-Gaudens national historic site in Cornish. Augustus Saint- Gaudens was the first sculptor to design an American coin. In Concord, you can visit the Pierce Manse, home of Franklin Pierce. He was the only New Hampshire citizen ever elected president. In Franconia Notch, you can ride on the Cannon Aerial Tramway to the 4,180-foot summit of Cannon Mountain. Enjoy the views of New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Canada, and New York.
