2 Hole #2 UNC Finley Golf Course is once again one of the premier college facilities in the nation. Traditionally recognized as one of the most beautiful courses in the southeast, Finley recently received a facelift that makes it one of the most challenging as well. Internationally renowned golf course designer Tom Fazio designed the new UNC Finley Golf Course. It features a completely different layout, yet some of the best aspects of the old course were retained. The new course features a par 72 layout with five sets of tees ranging from 4,981 yards from the forward tees to 7,187 yards from the championship markers, thus presenting a stiff challenge to the best golfers while still remaining accessible to those of all skill levels. Tees, greens and fairways were built and planted to the highest standard, while a state-of-theart irrigation system and exceptional drainage maintains the quality of the course. In addition, the practice range was expanded and rebuilt and the clubhouse and snack shop underwent extensive renovations. Carolina s golf teams also have a new team facility, the Chapman Golf Center which opened in November The 4,500-square-foot facility houses offices for the men s and women s golf coaches, men s and women s locker rooms, a team meeting room and a reception area. A Hall of Honor which honors former Carolina players and coaches is planned for the future. There is also a climate controlled individual teaching area with two hitting bays and a state-of-the-art teaching system. At the far end of the range adjacent to the team facility is a practice area used exclusively by the men's and women s golf teams. In addition to a practice Hole #16 range, there are putting and chipping greens and bunkers so the teams can hone their short games. UNC Finley Golf Course, originally designed by Hole #7 George Cobb and built by Raleigh businessman A. E. Finley, opened in Three holes were added in the early 1980s, also designed by Cobb, and the clubhouse underwent renovations in Over the years, Finley has been host to many collegiate, high school and amateur competitions. Finley also plays host to the annual A. E. Finley Executive Cup Tournament and to championships conducted by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. UNC Finley Golf Course is located off Highway 54 in Chapel Hill. It is frequented by Carolina students, staff and faculty as well as many alumni of the University. 3 Carolina's first-rate facilities and the resources and services provided give student-athletes a wide array of benefits. Tar Heel golfers find everything they need for developing academically and athletically right on the Carolina campus. Besides Finley Golf Course and the Chapman Center, the team has access to many other resources. ACADEMICS The University of North Carolina Academic Support Program assists student-athletes in exploring their interests, enjoying a broad educational experience, and reaching or exceeding their academic goals. Located primarily in the Pope Academic Support Center at the east end of Kenan Stadium in the Kenan Fiedlhouse, the program opened its doors in It is equiped with study facilities, tutorial rooms, a computer lab, a 128-seat auditorium and counselors offices. At the center, students meet with staff, including Robert Mercer, Director of the Academic Support Program, and Marisa Brnardic, academic counselor, to discuss course selection, major exploration, academic progress and academic eligibility. Our young people are students first and athletes second and that will always be the case at the University, says Athletic Director Dick Baddour. That is a credit to our coaches, administrators and support staff, but most of all, our student-athletes. Their accomplishments in the classroom are very impressive. The Academic Support Program serves approximately 750 student-athletes. The Academic Support Center is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the week and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. Visitors are welcome to tour the facility during afternoon hours. Ted Smith working out in the weight room. FITNESS CENTER Student- Athlete Development Coordinator Jeff Connors and a knowledgable staff, including Steve Gisselman, supervise the use of the 8,000- square-foot Fitness Center which includes state-of-the-art equipment and is located below the academic center in Kenan Fieldhouse. One of three fitness facilities utilized by Carolina athletes, the Kenan center features a performance lab where aerobic equipment such as treadmills, computerized biocycles, stationary bicycles and a steps machine is used both for conditioning and for monitoring rehabilitation. A vast array of free weights, Kaiser compressed air machines and a full Nautilus line are used in tailormade workouts designed to increase flexibility and power. Student Services Will Dottley working on a project in the Academic Center. MEDICAL CARE The Tar Heels also receive excellent care from one of the country's best sports medicine programs. Dr. Tim Taft, Director of Sports Medicine, oversees a comprehensive program designed to keep student-athletes healthy and to rehabilitate any injuries quickly and successfully. Team physicians include Tom Brickner and Mario Ciocca. Dan Hooker, Coordinator of Athletic Training, directs a staff of full-time athletic trainers and physical therapists, graduate students and undergraduates. Cody Malley will serve as the trainer for the men s golf team. The medical and athletic training facilities are in the Student Health Center and Fetzer Gym for easy access if treatment or advice on the care and prevention of injuries is needed. The Carolina Athletic Department also recognizes a responsibility in educating student athletes on the physical, mental, emotional and legal issues involved in drug abuse. Accordingly, the department has established a drug education and prevention program which is administered by the University's Student Health Services. CAREER PLANNING & PLACEMENT Carolina student athletes can prepare for the future by participating in UNC s career planning and placement program. The program combines services from the University s Career Planning and Placement Service and the Athletic Department s special activities. The departmental program includes a monthly newsletter, skills development workshops, career planning seminars and information on such topics as resume preparation and interview techniques. ACC HONOR ROLL INCLUDES 257 TAR HEELS The University of North Carolina had 257 students qualify for the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll, according to ACC Commissioner John Swofford. Five golf team members, Ramon Bescansa, Bill Cherry, Doug Kingston, Robbie Petty and Richard Treis, qualified for a spot on this Honor Roll. The Honor Roll is comprised of student-athletes in a varsity sport who earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the school year. 6 History The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was the nation s first state university to open its doors and the only public university to award degrees in the 18th century. Authorized by the N.C. Constitution in 1776, the university was chartered by the N.C. General Assembly Dec. 11, 1789, the same year George Washington first was inaugurated as president. The cornerstone was laid for Old East, the nation s first state university building, Oct. 12, Hinton James, the first student, arrived from Wilmington, N.C., Feb. 12, Location The 729-acre central campus includes the two oldest state university buildings, Old East and Person Hall. Old East and Playmakers Theatre, an 1852 Greekrevival building are National Historic Landmarks. The American Society of Landscape Architects selected the Carolina campus as one of the most beautifully landscaped spots in the country. That list, released in 1999 timed to the society s centennial, is among the latest praise affirming the charm of mighty oaks, majestic quadrangles, brick sidewalks and other landscaping synonymous with UNC. Today, the campus is undergoing an unprecedented transformation made possible in part by North Carolinians overwhelming approval of the $3.1 billion bond referendum for higher educaiton. The referendum, approved in November 2000, was the nation s largest higher education bond package. The bonds are bringing Carolina $510 million for renovations, repairs and new buildings so 21st century students can learn in a 21st century environment. Also guided by a visionary master plan for growth now coming to life, the university is investing another $600- plus million from non-state sources, including private gifts, for other buildings essential to excellence. The resulting capital construction program is believed to be the largest underway at any major American university. Chapel Hill has been called the perfect college town by publications including Sports Illustrated. UNC anchors one corner of the famed Research Triangle Park, which has played a vital role in nurturing the economic development of North Carolina. Recent Rankings In the U.S. News and World Report magazine s 2002 America s Best Colleges guide, UNC was ranked fifth among the nation s top public universities and tied for 28th overall among both public and private campuses. Among undergraduate business programs, the Kenan-Flagler Business School ranked fifth nationwide. Carolina also was mentioned for becoming the nation s first major highly selective public university to announce an end to early decision admissions. U.S. News also ranked numerous graduate degree programs and specialty areas at UNC among the top 25 nationwide, in April The magazine rated programs in the schools of business, education, law, medicine, nursing and public health. Several schools, degree programs and specialty areas were in the top 10. The Top American Research Universities, in a 2002 edition, ranked Carolina fifth among public universities. The rankings are based on data covering areas such as research, private support, faculty and advanced training. Kaplan/Newsweek s How to Get into College guide, in a 2003 edition, ranked Chapel Hill one of 12 hot colleges. Wrote the editors, with a tough economy, the hottest schools may well be the best bargains those offering excellent academics at affordable prices. That s why our list is dominated by some of the country s top public universities, like the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As America s oldest public university, (Carolina) has a deep sense of tradition, and that makes students feel connected. Although tradition is important, Carolina is also thinking about the future. In the next decade, the school plans to invest at least $245 million in genomic sciences. The Unofficial, Unbiased Insider s Guide to the 320 Most Interesting Colleges listed Carolina second among the top 10 hot and trendy national universities, based on results of the Kaplan 2002 National Survey of High School Guidance Counselors. Carolina was second behind Harvard University among top schools. Kiplinger s Personal Finance Magazine ranked UNC first among 100 best public colleges combining great academics and affordable tuitions. These rankings are based on cost, quality and financial aid factors. Overall the rankings aren t radically different from our 1998 and 2000 surveys, according to the magazine. In fact, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill tops the rankings for the third time a remarkable threepeat for the Tar Heels. The 2003 Fiske Guide to Colleges labeled UNC one of 21 public universities in the United States and Canada that are a best buy university based on the quality of the academic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance. As the flagship campus of the state university system and the oldest public university in the United States, UNC-Chapel Hill has earned its place among the South s most prestigious universities, according to the guide. The guide cited UNC s nationally recognized CAROLINA MEN S GOLFUniversity of North Carolina honors program and quoted a senior: College town in the dictionary should show a picture of Chapel Hill. The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education concluded in 2002 that Carolina ranked first among public campuses and sixth overall for success in integrating African-Americans. The evaluation rates the nation s 26 highest academically ranked universities in 13 categories or factors of racial diversity. The university is particularly strong in the categories dealing with student diversity, according to the journal. The university is ranked second in the percentage of total black enrollments and first in the percentage of black freshmen. Chapel Hill also fares well in most measures of black faculty. The university has nine African-American faculty members who hold endowed chairs. That is the highest number in the United States. Business Week magazine listed the Kenan-Flagler Business School s master s of business administration degree program 18th in its 2002 rankings. The Wall Street Journal ranked Kenan-Flagler 12th among MBA degree programs. Kenan-Flagler was the only Southeastern university program listed among the top 15. The 2002 ranking is based on The Wall Street Journal/Harris Interactive Business School Survey focusing on the opinions of recruiters who recruit fulltime business school graduates. The Financial Times, a London-based newspaper, has issued recent rankings listing Kenan-Flagler s MBA program 23rd among the top 100 worldwide and its executive education program 28th. Kenan-Flagler also was eighth among U.S. schools for top salary increases among alumni surveyed. Key Statistics Now in its third century, UNC belongs to the select group of 61 American and two Canadian campuses forming the Association of American Universities. UNC s academic offerings span a broad range of fields and include 69 bachelor s, 111 master s and 75 doctoral degrees as well as professional degrees in dentistry, medicine, pharmacy and law. Five health schools which, with UNC Hospitals, comprise one of the nation s most complete academic medical centers are integrated with liberal arts, basic sciences and high-tech academic programs. In fall 2002, Carolina enrolled about 26,000 students from all 100 North Carolina counties, the other 49 states and more than 100 other countries. Eighty-one percent of Carolina s 15,961undergraduates were from North Carolina. Sixty-onepercent of Carolina s students were undergraduates, 30 percent graduates and another nine percent were professional degree-seekers. Those students learn from a 3,000-member faculty. Many of those faculty members hold or have held major posts in virtually every national scholarly or professional organization and have earned election to the most prestigious academic groups. The Carolina academic community benefits from a library with more than 5.3 million volumes and perennially ranks among the best research libraries in North Americas judged by the Association of Research Libraries. The most recent association listings place Carolina 16th among 114 research libraries in North America. UNC s North Carolina Collection is the largest of its kind among state-oriented collections on campuses nationwide. And the Southern and rare book collections also are among the country s finest. Students Recent freshman classes at Carolina have set new standards of excellence as measured by the rigorous coursework students have taken in high school, as well as their grades and SAT scores. The incoming freshmen of 2003 are continuing that trend. Besides setting a new record for high school preparation, the newest class will become the very best group of first-year students Carolina has ever admitted. UNC students have a long tradition of outstanding achievement. In December 2002, senior Morehead Scholar Karine Dubè of Canada was chosen for a Rhodes Scholarship, becoming the 36th UNC student to be so honored since 1902 and the 13th UNC winner since Carolina ranks second among public universities for the number of Rhodes Scholars produced. The newest Tar Heels entering Carolina this fall will include 14 Robertson Scholars. Along with 18 others who will matriculate at Duke University, they are part of the third class of this unique scholarship program, created by a $24 million gift from Julian and Josie Robertson. The full-tuition scholarship will allow each student to spend a semester in residence at the other campus. The scholarships bring together two of the nation s finest universities. The Robertson program also fosters enhanced collaboration between both campuses. Carolina s freshman class also will include 40 new Morehead Scholars: 23 of North Carolina s most dynamic young leaders, 12 from eight states across the U.S., two from Great Britain and three from Canada. Among the largest and most competitive scholarships at U.S. colleges and universities, the Morehead Awards cover all expenses for four years of undergraduate study, including summer enrichment experiences. The program, now more than a half-century old, is modeled after the Rhodes Scholarships to Oxford University in England. Page UNC Men s Golf Media Guide
