The Vision for the Badger Performance Center
OUR NEED The University of Wisconsin Athletic Department is committed to maintaining and enhancing its standing as one of the finest intercollegiate athletics programs in the country. In order to achieve that goal, significant resources must be invested in areas such as scholarships, equipment and team travel. Another key component to the success of our student-athletes is the availability of modern on-campus athletic facilities. Over the past decade, Badger supporters have invested private gifts toward the renovation or construction of athletic facilities such as the Kohl Center, Fetzer Academic Centers, Porter Boathouse and Camp Randall Stadium. While these facilities have had a positive impact on our athletic program, a number of our sports remain at a competitive and recruiting disadvantage due to inadequate athletic facilities as compared with our peer institutions. For today s student-athlete, studying and training is a year-round commitment. Balancing the rigors of competing at the intercollegiate level with the demands of the classroom is one of the greatest challenges our student-athletes face. That is why it is critical our student-athletes are provided with exceptional support services so they may pursue their dreams in the classroom and on the fields of play. At present, the support units of academic services, athletic training/sports medicine, and strength and conditioning are housed in the lower level of the McClain Center. These areas were initially designed and constructed more than 20 years ago for use by 300 student-athletes. While this facility has certainly served the Badgers well, these areas can no longer effectively accommodate the academic and athletic needs of the 800 student-athletes competing in 23 sports. Additionally in the lower level of the McClain Center, the current football team locker room and associated equipment room has become outdated and too small to accommodate the needs of the football program. Therefore, it is essential this space be modernized and enhanced to support the football studentathletes and coaches as they look to maintain the critical recruiting edge with our peer NCAA and Big Ten Conference institutions.
OUR VISION To address these challenges and enhance the areas crucial to the success of our student-athletes, plans have been developed for the construction of the Badger Performance Center and renovation of the McClain Center basement. This facility project will impact the majority of the Division s student-athletes through the enhancement of the support services areas and team locker rooms. Features of the state-of-the-art Athletic Performance Center, which will be located immediately north of Camp Randall Stadium, include: Football team suite which includes player and coach locker rooms, team lounge, equipment room, an elite performance lab and hot/cold recovery pools. Bi-level strength and conditioning center which includes a 10,000 sq. ft. weight room, cardio area, and 100 yd. sprint track.
In addition to the construction of the new Badger Performance Center, the basement of the McClain Center will be renovated to provide expanded and enhanced space for the Athletic Training Room and Fetzer Student-Athlete Academic Center. Plans include the creation of expanded rehabilitation and treatment areas, additional study rooms and tutoring space, along with an expanded computer lab and student lounge. Men s and women s all-sports team locker suites also will be created for use by teams who practice at other campus facilities but use support services offered in the Badger Performance Center and/or McClain Center.
OUR CHALLENGE The University of Wisconsin Athletic Department is self-funded and receives no tax dollar support for its operating budget and facility construction. Rather, the Department relies on our greatest resource the collective loyalty, passion and generosity of our alumni and friends people like you that help us provide outstanding academic and athletic opportunities to the young men and women who wear the Cardinal and White. The U.W. Athletic Department must rely primarily on private gifts to fund its facility needs. Accordingly, in order to cover the project costs, a funding model which includes a goal of $10 million in new private gifts has been established by the Department for the Badger Performance Center/McClain Center remodel. Once this goal is met, the Athletic Performance Center will progress to the final design and construction phase with the goal of opening the facility prior to the athletic season. OUR CAMPAIGN During the current silent campaign, the University of Wisconsin Athletic Department is seeking leadership gifts which would put us in a strong position to create the Badger Performance Center dedicated to the needs of our studentathletes. Please note gifts of all levels are needed and are very much appreciated. Accordingly, the Athletic Department will move into a more public campaign once we approach our fundraising goal and it is clear our vision will become a reality. Interested individuals should note gifts can be pledged over five years with a first installment being completed by a mutually agreed upon time period. Additionally, gifts made in support of the Badger Performance Center are considered charitable gifts to the UW Foundation on behalf of the U.W. Athletic Department and accordingly, are 100% tax deductible. We are pleased to share multiple gifts have been secured from alumni and friends which puts us nearly a third towards to our fundraising goal. While we are off to a fine start, there is much work still to be done if we are to turn our vision into a reality.
DONOR RECOGNITION OPPORTUNITIES A leadership gift warrants the naming of a particular area in recognition of the donor or someone the donor wishes to recognize. The University would be honored to display your name in recognition of your generosity. The Athletic Department and University are pleased to offer the following recognition opportunities currently available for consideration: Badger Performance Center $7,000,000 Football Team Suite (Basement) $1,000,000 COMMITTED Players Locker Room $500,000 Lockers (120) Former Players Only $5,000 Team Lounge $250,000 COMMITTED Recovery Area $50,000 COMMITTED Assistant Coaches Suite $100,000 COMMITTED Head Coach s Suite $50,000 COMMITTED Strength and Conditioning Center (1 st and 2 nd Floor) $2,000,000 Weight Training Area $500,000 COMMITTED Cardio Training Area $250,000 Speed Training Area $100,000 Director s Office $50,000 COMMITTED Reception Area $50,000 COMMITTED McClain Center Athletic Training Center $1,000,000 COMMITTED Rehabilitation and Treatment Area $100,000 Training Table Examination Area $50,000 Preventative Taping Room $50,000 Director s Office $50,000 COMMITTED Head Football Trainer $50,000 Recovery Center $100,000 Equipment Center $100,000 Softball Locker Suite $50,000 Women s Soccer Locker Suite $50,000 Men s Soccer Locker Suite $50,000 Women s Track/Cross Country Locker Suite $50,000 Men s Track/Cross Country Locker Suite $50,000 Fetzer Student-Athlete Academic Center Large Classroom $100,000 COMMITTED Computer Lab $100,000 COMMITTED Director s Office $50,000 Camp Randall Stadium Football Office Suite $1,000,000 Badger Alley $250,000 Gate 2 Monroe Street Entrance $250,000 Donor Wall of Honor all gifts $25,000 & above * Donors making gifts/pledges of $25,000 and above will be recognized on the Donor Wall of Honor in addition to the individual area selected, if applicable. 7 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY As one of the original members of what today is called the Big Ten Conference, the UW-Madison has participated in intercollegiate athletics for more than a century. During that time, thousands of young men and women have had the opportunity to compete at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics while also receiving a world-class education. Participation in intercollegiate athletics has helped mold the character of these young men and women, instilling in them the values essential to success in all walks of life: discipline, work ethic, selfconfidence, teamwork and sportsmanship. These student-athletes, in turn, have brought national prominence to the University. This information is provided to seek leadership in bringing the new Badger Performance Center to the UW-Madison campus. With your support, this facility will truly benefit thousands of current and future Badger student-athletes for decades to come. The UW-Madison Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and its student-athletes appreciate your interest and support. For more information, please contact the Athletic Development Office by phone at (608) or by at development@uwbadgers.com. On, Wisconsin!
