4 Things that Texans Have to Explain to Out of Towners 1. Texan Might As Well Be Its Own Nationality. It s not uncommon to meet someone who greets you with, Hi, I m from Texas. What country are you from? 2. Don t Mess With Texas Isn t Meant To Be Funny. They re not kidding around when they say it. They take their state pride seriously and won t take your smack talk. 3. No, You Don t Have To Wear A Cowboy Hat To Live Here (But It d Look Good On You) 4. Everybody s Fixin To In Texas, when you re getting ready to do something, you re fixin to do it. It s not just a regional thing. You ll hear people saying it from one end of the state to the other. It s commonly called the State Verb of Texas. 5. Not Every Texan Owns A Gun. Make no mistake about it; Texans are avid supporters of the second amendment. And in the event of the zombie apocalypse, Texas is the place you want to be. But not everyone walks around with a gun in a holster. This isn t the Wild West. Well, not everywhere, anyway. 6. Watch Out For Speed Bumps. They re armadillos and pretty much everyone agrees they re creepy in a cute way. 7. And For The Millionth Time, Ordering A Coke Doesn t Mean You Want A Coke. Listen up, soda people. When you want a Dr. Pepper, you order a Coke. When you re asked what kind of Coke, then you say Dr. Pepper. It s a Texas thing. 8. Cowboy Boots Work With Every Outfit. Not everyone in San Antonio wears them, but cowboy boots are far from an exaggerated stereotype. They can be worn everywhere, go with everything.

8 K.R. Ravindran President, July 2015 T F KR.Ravindran@rotary.org Dear fellow Rotarians, It is my pleasure to welcome you to this Rotary institute. We all face many questions in our lives: Will I see the needs of my community and meet them? Will I work for peace and goodwill wherever I go? Will I spend my time pursuing what is best? In Rotary, we have already answered those questions. We choose to act out of compassion toward those who are suffering. We pursue peace in areas where peace seems impossible. As Rotarians, we daily practice Service Above Self. Every Rotary institute is an opportunity to reaffirm our core values and to plan the year ahead with those values in mind. We examine the way we are doing things to see what is working and what isn t, and we come together as Rotary leaders to share ideas and prepare for the great work we will be doing. Rotary is only as strong as its members. Each of you will have a responsibility this year to motivate and encourage current Rotarians, and to draw in new members. This institute will be one of the events that equip you for that task. Throughout your sessions, I ask that you take the opportunity to learn from one another, to plan, and to grow. This is going to be a pivotal year for Rotary, and I am honoured and excited to share it with you. I send my best wishes to you: May this institute inspire you to lead Rotary to Be a Gift to the World. Sincerely, K.R. Ravindran President, Rotary International ONE ROTARY CENTER 1560 SHERMAN AVENUE EVANSTON, ILLINOIS USA T F

9 K.R. Ravindran RI President Tea bag packaging Rotary Club of Colombo 77 Nungamugoda Road, Kelaniya, Western Province, Sri Lanka Ravi is CEO of a publicly listed company which he founded with a worldwide clientele in the tea packaging industry. He also serves on the board of several other companies and charitable trusts. He is the founding president of the Sri Lanka Anti-Narcotics Association. As his country s national PolioPlus chair, Ravi headed a task force consisting of the government, UNICEF, and Rotary and worked closely with UNICEF to successfully negotiate a ceasefire with the northern militants during National Immunization Days. A Rotarian since 1974, Ravi has served RI as treasurer; director; Foundation trustee; committee member, vice chair, and chair; task force member; RI training leader; and district governor. He also chaired the Schools Reawakening project, sponsored by Rotary clubs and districts in Sri Lanka, to rebuild 25 tsunami-devastated schools to benefit 15,000 children. Ravi and his wife, Vanathy, are level 4 Major Donors of The Rotary Foundation. They have been married since 1975, and have two children and one grandchild. Will we avert our eyes from suffering, or will we alleviate it? Will we speak words of compassion, or will we act on them? Will we be content only to take from the world or will we give back to it?
