Taken individually, each aspect of the programs can be found in many other professional development offerings. But the summer programs are unique in offering opportunities where all of these activities occur in one concentrated period, each building upon the other, creating a synergy that goes far beyond the traditional professional development offering. These programs provide the much needed opportunity to spend a concentrated period of time learning, discussing and reflecting on educational leadership without the inevitable interruptions of the school day. Program offerings are aligned with the California Professional Standards for Educational Leaders. With the focus on school accountability, the administrator is looked to as an instructional leader, reflective practitioner, catalyst, a manager and a facilitator who ensures that student achievement is improving. Therefore, our programs are designed to address all of these roles. Realizing that there is no one blueprint for leadership, the challenge throughout the program is for each participant to take the learning from colleagues and nationally recognized experts and apply it to his or her situation. Our focus during the summer programs is on leadership and accountability leading to improved student achievement. Each program has been designed to include: n Opportunities to interact with leading researchers in educational administration, a unique opportunity to get beyond the text and ask questions of researchers whose work you have read and studied; n Small ongoing discussion groups of educators who have a common base of experience, while at the same time divergent viewpoints, with whom you can dialogue on the theories presented by the researchers and identify the practical applications you can use immediately; n Time for individual reflection, often through journal writing, to consider how this can apply to your school setting and your leadership style; an opportunity to build a network of fellow administrators who face the same daily challenges as you and whom you know well enough to call upon whenever you need support and advice. Daily Schedule and Attendance The daily schedule for the summer programs is rigorous and challenging. A typical day includes programs that begin by 8 a.m. and may not end until 10 p.m. Attendance is required at all sessions, unless otherwise indicated. Certificates of Completion of ACSA Principals Summer Programs are provided only when participants attend all program events, unless prior arrangements have been authorized. Housing Institute and colloquium participants are housed in facilities at UCLA s Sunset Village, adjacent to the conference facility. Accommodations at Sunset Village include the features you expect from a conference hotel with the convenience and low cost of a University facility. All rooms have daily housekeeping service, telephone, TV and individually controlled air-conditioning. Three meals will be provided daily at the Covel Commons residential restaurant. As part of your housing package you will have access to racquetball and tennis courts, an Olympic-size outdoor swimming pool and a professionally equipped fitness room. Summer Institute: Housing is single occupancy with a semi-private bathroom (you will share an adjoining bathroom with another single occupant). Housing/meal package includes 6 nights lodging with arrival Sunday, June 19 and departure Saturday, June 25. Meals begin with dinner on June 19 and end with lunch on June 25. Summer Institute for New and Aspiring Principals: Housing is double occupancy with a private bathroom (you will share with your roommate). Single occupancy housing is available for an additional $250. Housing/meal package includes 4 nights lodging with arrival Monday, June 27 and departure Friday, July 1. Meals begin with dinner on June 27 and end with lunch on July 1. Credentialing information To the extent possible ACSA will work with local districts, colleges and universities to ensure that successful completion of the ACSA Principals Summer Programs can count as non-university program hours for accredited administrative service credential programs.

3 ACSA Principals Summer Institute Creating Cultures and Practices of Collaboration June 19 June 25, 2016 The Summer Institute is designed for practicing principals with at least one year of experience as a principal. It is clear that the role of a principal today, more than ever, requires leadership. An effective school principal has a clear vision, the courage to take risks, the personal integrity to assume individual responsibility and, perhaps more than anything, a passion for making a difference for children. As Ackerman, Donaldson and van der Bogert state in the introduction to Making Sense as a School Leader, School leadership is neither finite nor static. It is not something that can be mastered once and for all, nor is it a particular set of skills that can readily be acquired. Rather, school leadership is a quest to shape a complex, dynamic, exciting entity called a school into a place not only where all children acquire valuable knowledge and skills but also where children and adults alike are valued, respected and challenged to be their best. The goal of Creating Cultures and Practices of Collaboration is to ignite lively and productive conversations among principals about your own leadership in schools. An outstanding faculty of educational experts and school practitioners has been assembled. Moreover, participants will represent diverse educational settings from throughout California practitioners have much to share and much to gain. This heterogeneity will deepen exchange and learning around the leadership challenges confronting today s school leaders Faculty will Include: n Julie Adams n Judge David Carter n Kate Kinsella n George Manthey n Horacio Sanchez n Jay Westover Topics will Include: n Working with a Diverse Community n Staying Legal n Implementation of CCSS n School Leadership in a Digital Age n Leading Instruction for English Learners n Leading Instruction to Catapult Student Achievement n Creating and Implementing Systems that Work Registration & Admission Registration must be accompanied by a $200 nonrefundable deposit or full payment. 5 ACSA Summer Institute for New & Aspiring Principals June 27 July 1, 2016 We are celebrating our 24th summer at UCLA in 2016 as ACSA s largest residential program. The Summer Institute for New & Aspiring Principals will be focused upon development of The 21st Century Site Leader. How are schools going to move from the fixed content and skills focus of the nineties to the rigorous, complex and creative focus of the 21st Century? There is only one answer: YOU. The Summer Institute for New & Aspiring Principals is designed to provide you with a few of the essentials for your journey. We have a host of wonderful presenters, but it is the work done in small teams led by experienced, successful Team Leaders that separates this experience from other professional development. Every day, and sometimes twice a day participants meet with their teams to process the presentations, share insights, experiences and resources, fears and challenges. This is time to ask questions and to give and to accept nonjudgmental support from peers who are facing similar challenges. Aspiring meet with aspiring; principals team with other new principals. Teacher leader? District or County Office Coordinator? Professional Developer? Assistant Principal? Think you want to be a principal? Wonder if you want to be a principal? Are you K-12 Principal in your first or second year? The Summer Institute for New & Aspiring Principals is where you need to be, June 27-July 1, in the beautiful, newly remodeled conference facilities at UCLA Faculty: n Julie Adams n Jeff Eben n Frances Gipson n Sharroky Hollie n Kenneth Williams Registration & Admission To guarantee a spot in the program registration forms and complete payment must be received by June 20, THE BEST PRACTICAL ADVICE AND TIPS I WAS GIVEN TO HANDLE THE CHALLENGE OF TAKING OVER AS PRINCIPAL. 8 In the summer of 1992, ACSA and the Principals Center at Harvard Graduate School of Education co-sponsored our first summer institute on the UCLA campus. In 24 years the summer program has been attended by over 21,000 administrators. Our summer programs provide opportunities for administrators to meet in a stimulating and supportive setting to examine crucial school reform topics applicable to their work. Each program is designed to provoke and ultimately foster a life commitment to the calling of teaching and learning. These events are designed to provide participants opportunities to focus their resolve for better practice and improve leadership skills. The programs offer practitioners invaluable days of study reflection and discourse with experts and school leaders who represent the best throughout the educational spectrum. An outstanding faculty has been assembled for each program. Moreover, participants will represent diverse education settings from throughout the state and are practitioners who have much to share and much to gain. Formal and informal learning activities deepen exchange and learning around the leadership challenges confronting today s school leaders. These interactions will enable participants to extend their learning and their support network far beyond the boundaries of these programs. In this brochure, you will find descriptions and applications for each of the exciting summer programs. We invite you to read through the brochure and talk with your colleagues who are alumni to see why spending part of your summer with us at UCLA learning, discussing, laughing and reflecting may be the most important choice you make in your career.
