4 Southern Hospitality Abundant at Convention as Alpha Beta Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary of Refounding Chi Psis from around the country gathered on the campus of the University of South Carolina in Columbia for the 165th Annual Convention of Chi Psi Fraternity from July This was Chi Psi s fifth Convention in South Carolina, and this year marked the 50th Anniversary of the refounding of Alpha Beta, chartered most recently at USC in The first South Carolina Convention was in Spartanburg in 1873, and other state gatherings have taken place in Columbia in 1958, 1966 and As chronicled in earlier issues of The Purple and Gold, Alpha Beta is also the proud inhabitant of our newest Lodge, and Convention was an excellent time to show it off to the National gathering. (The group above is more geographically diverse than was the group pictured in this setting for the Lodge dedication two years ago.) The Beta Convention Planning Committee, including Julian B. 5 John Pincelli, B 80, John Austell, B 61, and others, prepared an excellent event. The Lodge was a hub of undergraduate activity, and the Executive Council held its Convention meetings in its Library. Undergraduate delegates arrived Wednesday for the Spencer Institute, which offered leadership training through a variety of separate seminars for #1s, #4, and Recruitment Chairs, led by a cadre of alumni volunteers. Friday afternoon, the official business of the Fraternity began in earnest as the #6, Julian B. Emerson, sounded the opening gavel of the 165th Annual Convention. Brothers Nickolas G. Milonas, Ε 07 and Mitchell A. Colleran, ΘΔ 08 were elected as Undergrad Representatives to the Executive Council, replacing retiring Ben Eisner, Σ 05 and Mike Carlson, Ν 05. Andrew J. Dewing, ΟΔ 84, Lathrop B. Nelson III, ΟΔ 97, and John S. Logan, ΕΔ 89 were elected to alumni terms, replacing Joseph J. Devaney, Ρ 80, ΜΔ 99, Michael C. Hurst, ΤΔ 87, and Troy N. Ivey, ΙΔ 90. The Final Banquet was held this year at the Columbia Convention Center Ballroom, and former Council Chair Mike Couick, B 81, served as Toastmaster. Former Council members Brian Heil, Ε 80, and Mike Kosusko, Ξ 77, and Alpha Beta alumnus stalwart John Goodwin, Β 80, were honored with Distinguished Service Awards, and Zack Blend, ΜΔ 06, was presented the Birge Award as most outstanding undergraduate. Recently revived Alpha Rho at Rutgers received the Goodbody Award for the strongest scholarship record, Mu Delta at Rollins was the recipient of the Founders Trophy for most improved, and Washington s Theta Delta won the Thayer Trophy for best all-around Alpha. With the closing gavel, the Banquet ended on a high note with a hearty rendition of Chi Psis Ever. Fall 2006 The Purple and Gold 5

From the Archives: Alpha Beta s History Oft-Interrupted Certainly no other Alpha has encountered such obstacles as has Beta: The Alpha was forced into dormancy three times. The large proportion of Southern students in our earliest Alphas, especially at Princeton and at Union, caused our Fraternity to have many associations in the South and to extend in this direction instead of west. Hamlin Beattie, Δ 56 (Princeton) of Greenville, SC, was more responsible for the original founding of our antebellum Alphas in the South, directly and indirectly, than any other member of our Fraternity. He attended the University of North Carolina as a graduate student, after graduating from Princeton in three years, and he helped found Alpha Sigma. He returned home to Greenville, and there instigated the beginning of our Alpha at Furman College in His initiative, with the help of James W. Wrenn, Δ 56, who was then in law school at U.S.C., and James M. Richmond, Σ 58, resulted in the organization of Alpha Beta at the University of South Carolina on 3 May The Alpha started with the brightest prospects, but with that Recent Unpleasantness [Civil War] breaking out, the University closed its doors and Beta was dormant until All of its 15 members joined the Confederate colors and many of these first Beta Brothers were probably killed, as diligent search furnishes no specific post-war information about eight of them. During the War, the University buildings were used as Army headquarters and college records were destroyed. Beta was revived in 1867, with Upsilon as its sponsor. Among those present and assisting was Daniel T. Smith, Υ 67, who had been initiated at Beta before the War. For several years the Alpha had a prosperous existence until it then became dormant in 1873, during Reconstruction Days, when carpetbaggers took possession of the State and its institutions, including the University of South Carolina. After the restoration of civil law in 1880 by General Thomas Carlyle s statement befits the brotherly exchange portrayed on this P&G cover from fifty years ago between B.M. Edwards, B 57 (alumnus initiate year), on the left, distinguished financial and civic leader in the South and fourth recipient of the Albert S. Bard Award, and H. Seger Slifer, A 11, E 12, the first #23, the 13th President of Chi Psi, and legendary figure in the fraternity world. At right, the original seven initiates of Alpha Beta s revival in 1956: Jo H. 7 A large contingent from recently-revived Alpha Rho at Rutgers and the Goodbody Award for best scholarship and use of educational programming. Wade Hampton, Beta was again revived, with the following members: O. H. Edwards, J. D. Haynsworth, T. W. Normant, William Haynsworth, J. E. Lee, D. R. Towers, H. M. Ayer, H. H. Huggins, and C.A. Prevost. At first it was numerically weak, but experience proved the wisdom of its policy of conservative and exclusive elections, and it soon became strong, vigorous and powerful. None of the old line antebellum fraternities came back to the South Carolina campus except Chi Psi. However, for the first time on the South Carolina campus, a group of the newer and larger national fraternities appeared, such as: Kappa Alpha Order in 1881, Sigma Alpha Epsilon in 1882, Alpha Tau Omega in 1883, and subsequently many others of this type, which have become large and strong groups in the South. Before the turn of the century, three of our eighteen active Alphas were located in the State of South Carolina, or one-sixth of the active Fraternity. Beta was flanked by Sister Alphas at Wofford and Furman. Many of the great leaders of the South were initiated at these Alphas during this era. In 1897, there arose in the State bitter feeling against fraternities by non-fraternity men and certain religious #23 Sam Bessey presented Chi Psi Educational Trust scholarship and fellowship awards to John Rheno, Q 07, and other recipients who attended the Banquet. organizations. The trustees were disposed to drop the matter, when the Anti-Secret Society movement appealed to the legislature. The composition of this body at this time was such that the bill to abolish fraternities passed with scant consideration. There was nothing for Beta to do except to surrender her charter. In 1927 the legislature repealed the anti-fraternity law. Shortly, thereafter a group of loyal Chi Psi alumni, consisting of David R. Coker, Beta 91; John P. Thomas, Jr., Beta 74, J. Waties Thomas, Beta 98; William S. Nelson, Beta 00, Clark Scammon Reed, Beta 00; Prof. Harry C. Davis, Beta 97; Prof. Edward C. Coker, Beta 94; Nelson T. Levings, Epsilon Delta 26; Gabriel Cannon, Tau 98; and Alester G. Furman, Upsilon 86 organized the Alpha Beta Lodge Corporation and purchased a Lodge at the corner of Pendleton and Bull Streets and proceeded to organize the Alpha Beta Society, aided by Harold W. Funderburk and Charles Coker Wilson, Sigma 29, both undergraduates at the University then. The Alpha Beta Society petitioned the Conventions for a revival charter for five straight years. Although it was considered a strong local and some legacies were members, and it was the only fraternity to then own a house at South Five of the original seven refounders of Alpha Beta were present at the 165th Banquet, flanked at left by John T.Austell, PhD, B 61; refounders Robert M. Bell 58, Hillyer Rudisell III 57, David A.White 57, James L.White Jr. 59, James W. Foster Jr. 59; and #7 Dr. Dan Ahlberg, N 67. 8 Singing was certainly in vogue at this year s Banquet, perhaps helped along by the songsheets on the tables. Rho Brothers lead On the Banks of the Old Raritan. Carolina, the conventions did not grant the charter and in 1933 the group decided to discontinue and many members joined other established national fraternities. Fraternities Brought Back By 1956, the University of South Carolina had provided a modern quadrangle for fraternities at a reasonable rent and built 14 units, under the leadership of University President Donald Russell, later the Governor of South Carolina. Having been the chief instigator in the revival of Alphas Sigma and Omicron, and active in the attempt to revive Beta from 1928 through 1933, Nelson T. Levings, in the Spring of 1956 again visited the University of South Carolina several times and found thirteen national fraternities and The Block C. Club occupying the University s fraternity buildings. President Donald Russell invited Chi Psi to re-enter the university and promised to provide suitable housing in the new fraternity buildings. Armed with this invitation from President Russell, Brother Levings attended the Executive Council Meeting in Chicago in May 1956, which authorized a Committee, consisting of Brothers Stanley J. Birge, Χ 08, H. Seger Slifer, Ε 12, and W. Jackson Chaille, ΑΔ 29 to investigate possibilities for revival. Shortly before the end of summer school in 1956, this Committee visited the University and recommended the revival of Beta to the 115th Convention, which granted the charter by a vote of 42 to 1, and put it in the hands of the Executive Council to execute that year. In the meantime, Brother Levings had met with undergraduates David White, 8 The Purple and Gold Fall th Annual Convention

9 While most of the songs were Chi Psi standards, this group of mostly-michigan Brothers provides a spirited Hail to the Victors. Individuals pictured were singing Chi Psis Ever at the Banquet s close. President of the Student Body, and Hillyer Rudisill, III of Charleston; who organized the first pledge group of revived Alpha Beta. Thus on 14 December 1956, in the Euphradian Literary Society Hall, were the altar fires of Alpha Beta rekindled for the fourth time. Attending the ceremonies were three of the five living alumni of the old Alpha Beta George C. Taylor 97, Robert E. Coker 96, and Clark Scammon Reed 00. The other two, Frederic W. McKerall 93 and William B. Wilson 99, who were ill, wired their best wishes. These new undergraduates had not belonged to a local society or a petitioning body whose alumni could be initiated with them. In order that the undergraduate group have an alumni group of older men to guide them, under the leadership of Nelson T. Levings, ΕΔ 26, and B. M. Edwards, Chairman of the South Carolina National Bank, a distinguished group of South Carolinians and southerners not affiliated with other fraternities were initiated into Chi Psi as alumni members of Alpha Beta. Many of them had attended the University of South Carolina when fraternities were dormant, and a few of them had been members of the old Alpha Beta Society, including Harold W. Funderburk, James W. Haltiwanger and Judge Kenneth Grimsley, all designated as Beta 57. #7 Stanley J. Birge, Χ 08, Ι 14, presided at the initiation and banquet at the Columbia Hotel, which was attended by the Executive Council and by other members of the Official Family. 10 Distinguished Service Awards to Goodwin, Heil, Kosusko John W. Goodwin, Β 71 known to many Brothers as Big has been an outstanding presence at Alpha Beta not just for his height but for his integrity, his commitment to family and friends, and his love for Chi Psi. He has found ways to give back to his fraternity from the day he joined. For example, when his early demonstration of leadership brought Alpha Beta its first television in the late 1960s, John was the one showing the technician how to set up the TV. Active in the Alpha s Alumni Association almost immediately after graduation, John was serving before long as its President. He was instrumental in rebuilding the Association some years later, and he played a significant role in the 1986 National Convention in Columbia. He maintains a special fascination in Chi Psi memorabilia, and many of his items are on display in the Lodge. A regular presence on campus, John demonstrates to younger Brothers the Chi Psi gentleman by example, and his boundless enthusiasm for fraternity and friendship exemplifies Chi Psi ideals. That Alpha Beta now has the most magnificent home at the University is obvious, but less well known is John s complete involvement that made the dream a reality. His contributions to the campaign and the Fraternity have been extraordinary, building the Lodge both literally and figuratively. From preliminary designs through finishing touches, John s enormous contribution of time, talent and heart became his daily routine for several years. John s wife, Deborah, and their children took an interest in the project, and provided support throughout. Their home was the site of many alumni gatherings, always open to Chi Psis. Although a great many alumni were very involved in the project, John provided the compass that guided actives and alumni toward lasting and superior decisions. It is no exaggeration to say that without John Goodwin, the new Lodge would not have been built, and Chi Psi would not have been re-born with a secure future at the University of South Carolina. Brian T. Heil, Ε 80, a most loyal son of Alpha Epsilon, has been a constant supporter of the Alpha and the alumni associations of Chi Psi. He joined the Epsilon Trustee Corporation shortly out of college and has served as its president for nearly two decades. Under his stewardship, two successful campaigns have provided major renovations to the Lodge. An undergraduate when the formal Epsilon Initiation Banquets were revived, his masterful job as toastmaster has helped insure that the unbroken string of banquets continues. Leading his Brothers is nothing new to Brian; in college he was the consummate Lodge Manager, whether the job was mending the boiler or rousting his Brothers out of bed with a hockey stick for a Saturday cleanup. His flare for ritual is regularly in evidence at his own Alpha and others as he conducts the newest members into our Brotherhood. As a member of the Chi Psi Executive Council for two terms, Brian played a significant role as the board and Central Office went through major changes. Never bashful at our Conventions, his pronouncements are always interesting. With his remarkable sense of humor, Brian is always willing to share stories of earlier Chi Psis, and Brian himself has become the stuff of legend. His unselfish devotion and undying love for Chi Psi serves as a model for others. For three decades, he has been a friend, counselor, confidant, and mentor for Chi Psi -- always available, open, ready to assist. In word and deed, Brian has exemplified the simple truths for which our Fraternity stands and by which our Brotherhood endures. He leads with his heart, but follows quickly with his humor, candor and selflessness. Younger brothers always find a friend and Brother in Brian, and our Brotherhood is a more special place because of Brother B. Of his many loves, including his lovely wife, three beautiful daughters, and his antique cars, Chi Psi and Alpha Epsilon take a prominent place. Brian has remained faithful to the premise that Chi Psi can continue and prosper long after college days. Michael Kosusko, Ξ 77, quietly serving Alpha Xi in numerous areas, developed a deep appreciation for Chi Psi. From his days as undergraduate representative to the Chi Psi Executive Council, no one could have imagined that this position would be just the beginning of his presence at board meetings and Conventions. Now, generations of Chi Psis have come to expect Mike Kosusko at gatherings of our Brotherhood Brother Kosusko s leadership and assistance has not been limited to Alpha Xi. As a graduate student at the University of Virginia, he affiliated with Alpha Omicron, and became active in the daily life of that Alpha. After graduate school he was involved with Alpha Rho and with his own Alpha s corporation. Relocating to the South, he continued to expand his involvement and has been a presence at Alphas Sigma, Upsilon Delta, Sigma Delta and Pi Delta. Believing that greater alumni involvement would enhance our Alphas, Brother Kosusko founded the Triangle Regional Alumni Association, which became the guiding force for our colony at Duke University. Brother Kosusko was a charter member of the Sigma Delta and Pi Delta corporations, and remains an active member of the Sigma Delta Corporation. Whether attending a Friday Dr. Dale luncheon or allowing his home to be used for a Fraternity ritual, Mike has always been a resource and advocate for his Brothers. He has taken the lessons learned from his array of experiences and made Chi Psi a better Fraternity. As a member of the Executive Council and its Advisory Board for over a decade, he constantly challenged us to move beyond petty jealousies to focus on providing the best possible experience to our undergraduate Brothers. Chi Psi is a Family Fraternity, and for Mike; it has special meaning. He met his wife, Rhonda, at the 141st Convention in Chapel Hill. Since their marriage, it seems they have rarely missed a Chi Psi national gathering, and Rhonda has been a constant source of support for Mike and for Chi Psi 10 The Purple and Gold Fall th Annual Convention

11 Birge Award to Rollins Zach Blend The Stanley J. Birge Award, created in 1971, honors Brother Stan Birge, Χ 08, Ι 14, as an exemplar of an enlightened alumnus, an influence for good in character and scholarship, and a faithful visitor to his own and all Alphas. This award is for exceptional loyalty and leadership in Fraternity affairs and for strengthening the brotherhood of Fraternity and humankind. John Zachary Blend, Mu Delta 06, has shown exceptional loyalty and leadership for the Brothers of Alpha Mu Delta and for the Rollins College community. Among his many campus roles, Zack served with pride and distinction as IFC President his senior year. Greek Affairs Coordinator Julie Gleason wrote that he reflects his Fraternity, Greek Life, and the Rollins Community in a very positive light. He is a passionate, fair-minded, well-spoken leader who puts the needs of the community above his own agenda. He truly leads by example. Within the Lodge, Zack officially served as #2, Lodge Manager, and member of the Executive Committee, but his leadership and ingenuity accomplished many special initiatives and projects with his Mu Delta Brothers. Known as The Blender, he always worked to gain consensus among the Brothers when planning Alpha projects, carefully setting realistic expectations about what could be accomplished. Mu Delta Brothers enjoyed a resurgence of involvement and enthusiasm and a growing confidence in their ability to influence campus life at Rollins due in large measure to Zack Blend. He played a significant role as mentor to the #1 and other officers, facing some tough issues, eventually carrying the day. Zach helped implement the Keys to Success hierarchy, invigorated scholarship incentives and the alumni newsletter, and brought a number of College and Chi Psi leadership programs to the actives. Zach always seemed able to work a certain rush magic, as he went out of his way to speak with prospective members, making each feel that he was the most important person on campus, inviting and encouraging them to be part of something great at Chi Psi. This spring, in large part thanks to Zack Blend, Mu Delta initiated twenty new Brothers, all solid young men interested in both scholarship and fraternity Stanley J. 12 Eighty years ago in the campaign to create an endowment for Chi Psi, we asked: Can Chi Psi put it over? Our team advanced the ball from deep in our own territory, up, up, past the middle of the field, to the shadow of the goal posts and then over for a touchdown! Thanks to Chi Psi s Men of Vision of the early Twentieth Century, Chi Psi created the first educational foundation in the fraternity world. Chi Psi has always provided for its undergraduate Brothers something that our host colleges did not. Through resources of The Chi Psi Educational Trust, from the Program for Self Development to the Alpha Management Retreat to the Spencer Leadership Institute, Chi Psi has been able get into the game and provide a winning combination of programs and experiences for generations of Chi Psis. We hope you ll do more than watch from the bleachers this year, and strongly support your Chi Psi team. 12 The Purple and Gold Fall 2006 Chi Psi Fraternity & Educational Trust

13 Chi Psi Fraternity & Educational Trust Annual Report 1 July June 2006 The Challenge of a Changing Environment The environment of today s college campus is markedly different than it was when we were in school fifty, twenty, or even five years ago. The world that today s college freshman enters has been changed by the internet, by raised economic and social expectations, by helicopter parents (always hovering around as close as a cell phone), by state and federal budget cuts for higher education, and by other internal and external factors. The competition of luxury commercial and college housing options make the idea of sharing a cold dorm with a dozen other guys less appealing than it used to be. The economics of having a full-time cook and assistants to provide appealing meals in an old-fashioned, family-style fraternity setting is staggeringly expensive. Tuition and fees continue to rise at levels at least twice the rate of inflation. And so fraternities and other organizations have had to adapt to some extent over time to keep their doors open. The changes to the environments in which our Alphas operate seemed significant enough for us to examine our model in order to ensure that we provide the highest quality of service and leadership opportunities to the actives and alumni of the Chi Psi. To better understand the current challenges faced by our actives and alumni, the Fraternity and Educational Trust jointly launched a strategic research project during the Spring 2006 academic term. Our assessment teams interviewed and surveyed over 850 undergraduate actives and pledges at every Alpha in Chi Psi. (To our knowledge, this is the first time any fraternity has ever attempted such an undertaking.) With the help of international public opinion and strategic research firm Abacus Associates, Chi Psi gathered quantitative and qualitative data about the current undergraduate experience. The analysis of the data continues this fall, and we plan to provide a full review of the project in the next issue of the P&G. In the end, with an informed discussion on the state of the Fraternity, we will revise our strategic plan to addresses changes to our environment and improve the Chi Psi experience for all actives and alumni. As a National organization, we have an obligation to good stewardship of our Alphas and the Fraternity, to provide a safe and constructive environment for our young men, and to challenge ourselves to avoid stagnation. The Chi Psi Self Assessment Project is an important step to enhancing the future for our Fraternity. While a primary focus has been on the Assessment, the boards and office continue to work together on a number of exciting and important initiatives: Regional Conferences are being reinstituted around the country, with the first having been held at Rutgers on 4 November and others in the spring: Mid-Atlantic in Chapel Hill on 10 February, Southeast in Atlanta on 4 March, and Midwest in Evanston on 14 April. The duties of the Visitor have been reorganized, and at least two visits are planned for each Alpha in Special assistance is being created and provided for several Alphas with recruitment challenges. The Trust s Program for Excellence is being reviewed and better marketed so more actives can participate. In addition to regular mailed issues of The Purple and Gold, alumni with available addresses will receive the Chi Psi Update at least quarterly and have access to the P&G on line. The Program on Chi Psi Values and Alcohol Education is being carried out at all Alphas this year by a trained facilitator. We ve purchased a new permanent headquarters building: Jeffrey Hall at 45 Rutledge Street in Nashville will be home to the Chi Psi Central Office, and Homecoming ceremonies are set for 17 March The environment on our campuses has changed, perhaps more in recent years than ever before. But Chi Psi is committed to adapting to remain relevant. For over 165 years, we have prided ourselves on leadership and a spirit of innovation. Today we rely on that spirit to propel us into the next generation of fraternity advancement. I hope you will join us in our stewardship of Chi Psi and our efforts to provide a meaningful experience for both undergraduates and alumni alike. Yours in Chi Psi, Sam Bessey, ΗΔ 97 Executive Director Annual Report Fall 2006 The Purple and Gold 13

14 NYC Luncheon Marks 80 Years for The Chi Psi Educational Trust as the Fraternity World s First Foundation Trust Chair Julian B. Emerson, B 80, offers news about the Fraternity and programs of the Educational Trust. Officially, it was eighty years ago that Chi Psi created the first educational foundation in the fraternity world. (We say officially, because that was the incorporation date of this separate Chi Psi entity. Chi Psi s educational endowment fund that became the Educational Trust is really a dozen years older than that.) A large group of Chi Psi alumni gathered for lunch at the Cornell Club in New York City on Friday 6 October to toast to Philip Spencer and celebrate the men of vision who began the Trust in the early part of the last century. The luncheon was held in conjunction with the fall meeting of the Trustees. For Chi Psi s first 70 years, there was no formal financial organization or policy because there was no need for it. A pittance was paid to support activities of the Executive Council, the headquarters was essentially a corner in the office of an alumnus, and The Purple and Gold was selfsupporting. Voluntary subscriptions financed the Visitor until 1911, when creation of a general endowment fund was approved. Despite that resolution, no active work was done toward an endowment until Edward C. Swift, Epsilon 76, became President in Skipe Swift saw the need for an Council Chair Andrew J. Dewing, OD 84, offers the Toast to Philip Spencer. A few of the other current and former board members in attendance included former #7 Carl Holstrom, I 57, Phil Gillingham, HD 00, Bob Dearth, A 66, #7 Dr. Dan Ahlberg, N 67, and former #23 Lee Pomeroy, X The Purple and Gold Fall 2006 Chi Psi Fraternity & Educational Trust

15 endowment and upon his election he began a campaign to raise permanent funds, personally soliciting alumni around the country. He reported on his progress annually at each Convention, and by 1915 his subscriptions were already $5,655. The campaign for a $500,000 Trust Fund was launched at the June 1926 Convention Banquet in New York. John Wendell Anderson, Epsilon 90, announced that the national officers had subscribed over $100,000 as evidence of their belief in the cause and of their faith in the success of the enterprise. Frank Matthiessen, Psi 95 (later Chi Psi s 8th President), contributed organizing and soliciting expenses, and fund-raising consultants advised the Fraternity on expectations and on methods. The active solicitors were J. Truman Bidwell, Beta Delta 25, and Charles Love Durham, Psi 99. Two years after the inception of this campaign, the Executive Council was able to report that approximately $512,000 had been raised in subscriptions payable over a five-year period and that The Chi Psi Educational Trust had approximately $240,000 in cash and securities on deposit. Within a few years, even in the middle of the Depression, almost all pledges were paid in full. Additional contributions and sound investing policy helped the fund grow over the years. Williams, Theta 02, was the eleventh President of Chi Psi ( ) and chaired The Chi Psi Educational Trust for 35 years. His leadership and vision propelled Chi Psi to the forefront among fraternities in its educational offerings. Upon his death, a scholarship was designated in his memory, but it was never endowed. Since 1966, the scholarship has been awarded to more than 240 Brothers, but the funding has always been provided from the general funds of the Educational Trust. In honor of the 80th Anniversary of the Educational Trust, we have embarked on a campaign to endow the Clifford Williams Scholarship. To date we have approached all former recipients to give back their scholarship to assist with creating this endowment. We are also approaching other Brothers that have been actively involved with the Educational Trust. If you would consider participating in the endeavor, please call the Central Office at or to williamsscholarship@chipsi.org. Michael F. 26 IN THE CHI PSI EYE Captain of the Maltese Falcon Chris Gartner Captains The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of Chris Gartner, Psi Delta 87, has been at the center of the boating world s big story this year as captain of the 287-foot Maltese Falcon, one of the largest and most expensive private sailboats ever built, a project Chris has been overseeing for many years. On a recent day this summer, the $80 million clipper left the Turkish shipyard of its birth and zoomed up the Bosporus, showing up rickety tourist boats and grimy cargo ships. Three enormous carbonfiber masts towered over the 88-meter yacht, which belongs to Silicon Valley financier Thomas Perkins (and which played a cameo role in the summer boardroom drama that roiled Hewlett-Packard). Made entirely in Turkey, the Maltese Falcon is the most visible sign of a boat-building boom that has turned this once-sleepy town on the Marmara Sea into a bustling industrial hub in just over a decade. Not so long ago, the idea of using Turkey to build a boat as sophisticated as the Maltese Falcon would have sounded like "building a Ferrari in Afghanistan," jokes Baki Goekbayrak, the Turkish naval architect who supervised the project.chris finally set sail this summer on a project he has been overseeing for many years. The inside of the Maltese Falcon has been described Maltese Falcon Captain Chris Gartner, ΨΔ 87 with owner Tom Perkins as having a very masculine interior with dark colors, high tech materials, and plenty of leather (including a shoe leather floor in the dining area). Perhaps the highlight inside is the bridge, with a Star Trek-type console for controlling the sails (and other mechanical equipment). From a touch-pad console, for optimum performance, the captain can rotate the masts and unfurl the sails embedded inside, a technological first. There are safety buttons of course, and the sails or rig do not move unless the start button is pressed. Once that happens, the sails can all be set in under six minutes.(on other sailboats, it would take us at least half an hour to manually set the entire set.) Tacking the yacht can be done in under two minutes, which for a yacht of 88 meters is awesome! The final days before the maiden voyage were particularly busy, as the Falcon crew raced to comply with myriad certification requirements and install last-minute fixtures. (During the final construction saga, Mr. Perkins, then a director at Hewlett-Packard, was battling with H-P Chairman Patricia Dunn over her investigation of leaks to the media.) Chris says he slept a total of seven hours in the three days before the boat left the shipyard. 26 The Purple and Gold Fall 2006 In the Chi Psi Eye

The award cited Joe for making a significant improvement in the response rate of one of the most challenging areas in the Denver region. His ability to manage large workloads on all surveys has produced significant cost savings to the Census Bureau. His commitment to helping the Denver region achieve its goals has consistently exceeded the expectations of his position. Spotlight on Iota Delta s Plunkett Trust While The Chi Psi Educational Trust is well-known in the fraternity world, somewhat less well-known are some of our local Alpha foundations, which serve to boost educational opportunities at the local level. One of these is The Robert B. Plunkett Memorial Educational Trust, which is affiliated with Alpha Iota Delta at The Georgia Institute of Technology. Established in 1989, the trust honors Brother Robert B. Plunkett, Iota Delta Brother Plunkett served Alpha Iota Delta loyally over many years. He also served the National Fraternity as our nineteenth President. A year after Brother Plunkett s death, Stamps Bethel, Iota Delta 1927, made a generous gift to start the trust with an initial endowment. Thanks to the generosity of numerous donors over the years, the trust now has an endowment of almost $30,000. Compared to The Chi Psi Educational Trust, this is a small amount, but for the short life of the Plunkett Trust, this is a remarkable achievement. The trust exists to support educational opportunities at Georgia Tech. This has been done from the beginning of the trust by awarding a small scholarship to the active Brother who has the most improved GPA from one semester to the next. Traditionally, the trust has sponsored an academic dinner hosting all Dean s List active Brothers and using the occasion to award the scholarship check for most improved. In 2003, the trust established the Robert B. Plunkett College-Bound Scholarship, available to the sons, daughters, stepchildren, and grandchildren of Iota Delta alumni, regardless of where they attend college. In 2005, the trust established the Stamps Bethel Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to two incoming freshmen at Georgia Tech regardless of Greek affiliation. Brother Plunkett is known for his famous dictum, Don t just talk about it; do it! The trust established in his memory lives up to those words. ALPHA PSI DELTA UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO F. George Robinson 32, past chairman and grandson of the founder of Robinson Brick in Denver, died 23 Aug 06, a few months after the brick maker was sold to an Austrian company. When Mr. Robinson joined the company in the 1930s, there were about three dozen brick manufacturers in Denver; today, there are rivals close by, but only one in the city. Robinson Brick has survived 126 years, spanning four generations, and the company's bricks are found in Coors Field and in some of Denver's historic neighborhoods. It makes more than 100 million bricks a year using clay from mines along the Front Range. Born in Denver in 1911, Mr. Robinson, known as Porry, went to the University of Colorado and then Harvard Business School, but when his father became ill about a year later he returned home to help run the plant. Mr. Robinson once served on the board of directors of the Aspen Skiing Co. and skied into his 90s until a heart problem kept him off the slopes. He and Bill Coors, grandson of brewery founder Adolph Coors, had a lot in common. Coors, 90, recalls that he and Mr. Robinson in the 1930s were members of a ski group called the Arlberg Club. "I could never keep up with him," said Coors, who also served on the Aspen Skiing board in the '60s. "He was so gung-ho. I would stop and smell the roses and enjoy the scenery. And he was one of those guys who would get to the top and want to get to the bottom just as fast as (he) could." He liked to host dinner parties, and friends who came by the house knew him as Porry. When he was a young boy, his sister called him Georgie Porgie, which somehow evolved into Porry, said his wife of the past six years, Dolores Loiseau. Mr. Robinson wasn't moving around well in his last days, she said, and died in his sleep in his brick condo in the Polo Club North neighborhood. Marybelle Schaeffer, his wife of 62 years, died in His late Brother, William W., was Psi Delta 31. He is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. "He was peaceful," Dolores Loiseau said. "There wasn't a frown on his face." Noted Doctor Richard K. Root, Alpha 59, Killed by Crocodile Richard K. Root, MD,Alpha 59 died on 19 March 2006 when a crocodile suddenly rose out of the water and dragged him from his dugout canoe on the Limpopo River in the Tuli Game Preserve in eastern Botswana. He was not seen again. His remains were recovered two days later. Brother Root s wife was in the canoe behind him and his guide, and she witnessed her husband s death. Guides were wary of hippos, but there had been no previous reports of crocodile attacks in that part of the Limpopo River. A nationally-known expert in infectious disease, internationally recognized in the field of leukocyte biology, and widely Dr. Root caring for patients in Botswana respected for his clinical and teaching skills, Dr. Root, along with his second wife, Rita O Boyle, had been in Botswana at the invitation of the Botswana Department of health and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He had been instrumental in starting the infectious disease program at UPenn when he was a professor there in The Penn-Botswana program helps provide treatment and services for HIV patients in Botswana, which has the world s highest rate of HIV infection at an estimated 40% of the population. Dr. Root had been working with the staff at Botswana s Princess Marina Hospital in Garborone, the capital city, and the couple had just visited a clinic in the remote northeastern district of Tuli when they decided to take the ill-fated river tour. The clinic operators have said they intend to name the clinic after Dr. Root. Dr. Root graduated from Wesleyan with honors in General Scholarship and distinction in Bio-Chemistry. He was #3 and Pledge Educator at Alpha Alpha, a varsity letterman in football and track, and a member of three honorary societies, including Sigma Xi. He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins in 1963 and, following his internship at Mass. General, he worked as a clinical associate and investigator at various divisions of the Nat l Institutes of Health and as Chief Resident and Instructor at Washington. From 1969 to 2002, he was Vice Chair of Medicine at U of Washington Medical School, Chief of Medicine at Harborview Medical Center, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UPenn, Vice Chair of Medicine at Yale (where he was voted Medical School Teacher of the Year in 1982), Chief of Medicine at the Seattle VA Hospital, and Chair of Medicine at U of California San Francisco. He was author of numerous articles, editor-in-chief of Clinical Infectious Diseases textbook, former president of the American Federation of Clinical Research, and director of the AIDS Advisory Committee of the National Institutes of Health.
