1 POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Title: Clinical Behavioural Consultant Supervisor: Team Leader DBMAS Department: DBMAS Date Completed/Approved: November 2009 Classification/FTE: Several Positions (full & part-time) SACS Level 7 Location: Adelaide Head Office Budget Responsibility: NA Organisational Chart Authority Levels Direct Reports (Remunerated): NA Chief Executive Direct Reports (Volunteer): NA Executive Personal Assistant Dementia Care & Development Research & Innovation Corporate Services Marketing, Fundraising & Communications Team Leader DBMAS Administration Officer Clinical Behavioural Consultants (6) Position Purpose & Broad Responsibilities The Clinical Behavioural Consultant will work as part of a multi-disciplined team with clients and consumers of the DBMAS program to improve the quality of life and care for people with dementia and their carers. Achieving this through driving the up-skilling and support for client groups to improve care for people with dementia and related behaviours; and ensuring care services are responsive to their individual and diverse needs and circumstances. Clinical Behavioural Consultant will also be required to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team supporting regional South Australia to meet the needs of carers and aged care providers with dementia and related behavioural issues.

Specific to the Role Key Result Area Key Tasks Key Performance Indicators Support and Advice Provide advice and determined strategies in conjunction with community and residential aged care professionals and/or carers caring for people with dementia who have behaviours that impact upon their care Engage multi-disciplinary health professionals to create positive outcomes for people with dementia, staff and their carers. Identify gaps in services and knowledge relevant to the target group/s. Advice and support is delivered within operational guidelines and policy. Strategies are developed with client and in conjunction with the DBMAS multi-disciplinary team, as necessary Effective utilisation of the DBMAS team skills are utilised to improve outcomes for clients. Effective questioning techniques are utilised to identify knowledge gaps and strategies are identified that are diverse and individualised to meet client needs. Linkages and Collaborative Arrangements Actively develop and assist with stakeholder linkages and collaborative arrangements. Linkages must be developed and maintained with: Aged care assessment teams Mental health, including specialist geriatric medical and old age psychiatry services Providers of extended aged care at home dementia Residential and community aged care services Commonwealth Carer Respite centres and Commonwealth Carelink centres Other linkages could include (this is not an exhaustive list): Carer support services and counselling Carer and peak consumer/carer information services Professional networks Dementia Training Study Centres (DTSC) and Dementia Collaborative Research Centres (DCRC) etc. Evidence exists which demonstrates that active contributions have been made to the development and maintenance of linkages and collaborative arrangements. 3
4 Key Result Area Key Tasks Key Performance Indicators Networking/ Liaison Case Management Information and Education Engage, identify and contribute to the overall team activities with respect to establishing and maintaining solid networking and liaison activities. Participate collaboratively in regional & team meetings to provide an integrated and collaborative approach. Undertake comprehensive assessment and analysis, recommend interventions, and evaluate outcomes Manage care planning, case conferences and short term case arrangement of care recipients Provide clinical supervision, crisis management and clinical mentoring for care providers Provide emphasis on techniques that build on the confidence and capacity of carers and care staff to manage people with dementia appropriately and in such a way as to minimise behavioural symptoms and reduce the stress on carers and care staff. Provide tailored information and education workshops for target groups in respect to dementia services & particularly services for people with BPSD (Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia) Regional In conjunction with the Manager and Team Leader Operations plan and roll-out regional service deliver through-out the state of South Australia Special Conditions Active participation in networking and liaison activities exists. Active participation is occurring Best practice is demonstrated and documented Care planning, case conferences are holistic and systemic and involve a multi-disciplinary approach Supervision, management and mentoring are delivered and incorporate the best clinical evidence for providers caring for people with dementia Evidence exists which demonstrates that increase skills level and confidence has reduced the behavioural symptoms and the stress involved in management of the symptoms Education and promotional services are delivered within agreed plans and timeframes. Identified needs and skills gaps are addressed by education activities. Regional service delivery is in line with program objectives and the commonwealth guidelines. Current driver s licence required and the ability to drive. National Police Clearance certificate required that meets the operational and compliance requirements of AASA. Participate on the on-call roster to respond to after hour enquiries for the service to be remunerated in line with award entitlements. Attend and participate in AASA staff meetings. Active participation in AASA Performance Management System. Assist the organisation in times of emergencies (by negotiation). Undertake specific after-hours work, including attendance at Alzheimer s social functions, speaking engagements represented Alzheimer s, or training (by negotiation). Undertake relevant and appropriate multi-functional duties as required. Undertake interstate/intrastate travel where appropriate to delivery of DBMAS services regionally. Undertake all tasks within budget parameters and constraints of a not-for-profit organisation. 4
5 Selection Criteria Skills Relevant skills in human services Demonstrated ability to co-ordinate and plan service delivery. Demonstrated ability to advocate for the rights and dignity of older people and their carers Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, with limited direction to achieve agreed goals. Proven ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of groups in the community and with a range of health and community care professionals. The ability to provide sound advice though telephone and face to face consultations especially in crisis situations. Ability to facilitate positive changes in care practices. Report writing skills Advanced skills in behaviour assessment and care planning. Basic counselling skills Sound computer skills, intermediate word processing skills, spreadsheet and database use skills. Commitment to social justice principles. Experience Extensive experience in dementia assessment, behaviour management planning, care planning, implementation and evaluation, clinical mentoring and supervision and in assisting those who diagnose and treat people with dementia. Working with older people and people with dementia Experience in working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary framework to address problems Working in residential and community based aged care services. Staff training and development and/or community education Networking with other agencies and professionals. A broad understanding of the aged care system and related legislation Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within the team Knowledge Expert knowledge of services, tools, techniques and resources available to assist the clients of the service Expert knowledge on the most recent advances in the care of people with dementia Knowledge of a range of strategies for working with people with complex needs. Cross-cultural competence Understanding of strategic dementia care issues within health and aging fields. Broad knowledge in the application of quality assurance principles. Knowledge of clinical governance practices Qualification Tertiary qualification in health or allied health related field (e.g. nursing, or psychology) Desirable Qualification Registration with the Nurses Board of South Australia Cert IV Training and Assessment 5
