1 NORTHUMBRIA HEALTHCARE NHS TRUST Profile of Learning Opportunities for WARD 18 NTGH HOSPITAL May 2009

3 Introduction Welcome to Ward 18 North Tyneside General Hospital. We are a mixed respiratory medical ward admitting patients from home, Out Patients, Emergency Care and Critical Care. We have 30 beds divided into 6 side rooms, 2 of which are en-suite and 4 bays each with 6 beds. We frequently have patients requiring non-invasive ventilation and we are the receiving ward for all tracheostomy and laryngectomy patients in the hospital. We have a Ward Manager, 2 Ward Sisters and 15 Staff Nurses. We also have 7 Health Care Assistants, 3 Support Workers (Domestics), 3 Ward Clerks and a Modern Apprentice. Ward 18 is Consultant led with 2 Respiratory Physicians, a Medical Registrar, 2 Foundation Level 2 Doctors and 1 Foundation Level 1 Doctor. We have our own dedicated Medical Social Worker, Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist and we are supported by a large Multidisciplinary team, including the Palliative care team, lung cancer specialist nurses, respiratory nurses and a Haematology specialist nurse. Consultant ward rounds occur twice a week on a Monday and a Thursday and we have a weekly MDT meeting on a Tuesday morning. OFF DUTY: The off duty roster is usually completed 4-6 weeks in advance and can be located in a file at the nurses station on the ward. You may self roster if you wish, but please take into account your mentors shifts and how often you need to work with them. SHIFT TIMES: Early: (including a concessionary breakfast break and an unpaid ½hr lunch break) Late: (including an unpaid ½hr tea break) Night Duty: (including an unpaid 1hr break) Please try to arrive a few minutes before the beginning of each shift to prepare for the handover.
4 SICKNESS: Please ring the ward and speak to the nurse in charge if you intend to be off sick, at the earliest opportunity, unless this is likely to be a prolonged episode of sickness it is advisable that you contact the ward on a daily basis and let them know as soon as possible when you intend to return to duty. EDUCATION/TRAINING: There is a staff notice board located in the Ward Managers office and behind the nurses station on the ward where information about upcoming events is displayed. For information on courses and study days available within the trust, please refer to the training file at the nurses station. Please be aware that not all courses will be suitable for Student Nurses. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: You will be allocated a mentor when you start work on the ward and you will need to meet as soon as possible to discuss your learning contract and competencies. During this session you should both set out ground rules, such as how often you will get together, the length of the sessions, and the venue. You will be suppernummery for your placement with us and you will work alongside your mentor as much as possible. Night shift is optional, but please be aware that the majority of our mentors do rotate onto night shift on a regular basis, should you not wish to follow them onto night shift than a co-mentor will be allocated to you, the same applies if your mentor has annual leave or rings in sick for any length of time. Please do not hesitate to speak to ANY member of staff if you have any questions. WELCOME TO THE TEAM!!
