1 At Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust we provide mental health, secure, substance misuse and learning disability services across Norfolk and Suffolk. There are excellent rail and road links into East Anglia and to London. Wedgwood House is a mental health inpatient unit situated behind the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds. The three wards provide assessment and treatment services for acute mental disorders and rehabilitation including depression, bipolar, psychosis, dementia and crisis resolution: - Abbeygate, 17 beds, - Northgate, 21 beds - Southgate, 16 beds All of the wards have access to a low stimulus environment (LSE) The wards operate 24hour working and posts require rotation onto night shifts. Shift times are: Early: 07:30 to 15:30; Late: 13:30 to 21:30; Night: 21:00 to 08:00 There is a handover of care between each shift to ensure care packages are maintained and each patient s presentation, risk, daily activity, progress and needs are shared with the whole team. Our primary focus is on collaborative working; placing great emphasis on the assessment/recovery model. Many aspects relating to service user recovery is reflected within the assessment tools the patients and staff use and the philosophy that underpins patient centred care. Southgate Southgate ward provides care for adults who are experiencing acute mental health problems. The ward benefits from the dedicated input of an Acute Psychiatric Consultant and a full multi-disciplinary team (Occupational Therapists, Complimentary Therapists, Pharmacist and Psychologist). Working alongside the nursing team we have support workers and administrators and we receive daily input from the home treatment team. Service users are admitted to Southgate ward for a period of assessment to enable the team to identify the most appropriate treatment/recovery plans. This assessment involves all of the large multi-disciplinary team and fully involves the service user and carers. Southgate ward works closely with Northgate ward (recovery ward) as well as the Home Treatment and Integrated Delivery teams to identify the most appropriate path for the individual and promote a smooth discharge home, where possible.

2 Southgate ward also staff the 136 suite attached to the unit. This involves arranging MHA assessments and supporting people who have been identified as being a risk to themselves or others. The role requires joint working with Social Services and the Police. Our collaborative relationship with the Police is something Wedgwood House is very proud of. We are also proud of our involvement in the Triangle of Care initiative and have close links with service user and carer representatives, involving them on developing information leaflets, patient community meetings and interviewing prospective staff. Staff on the ward have attended the Peer Support Worker course. The charge nurses hold carers clinics with identified carers or family and friends and provide information and support throughout their loved ones admission. Home Treatment The Home Treatment Team provides community support as an alternative to hospital admission for individuals aged 18 upwards. They work as an integrated health and social care team to deliver coordinated and cohesive service for individuals with mental health needs that require them to be considered for acute/crisis admission to an acute placement. We have strong links with all of the Wedgwood wards. The staff team on Home Treatment Team comprises of a number of professionals from many disciplines that work closely together to focus on patients achieving their recovery goals. Our multi-disciplinary team includes Registered Learning Disability Nurses, Support Time Recovery Worker and Consultant Psychiatrist. Working alongside the nursing team we have support workers and administrators and we also have access to psychologist and pharmacist support. Abbeygate Abbeygate is a Mental Health assessment and treatment ward within Wedgwood House on the West Suffolk Hospital site in Bury St Edmunds, serving the West Suffolk locality. Although a mixed gender ward, the facilities provide separate sleeping areas for male and female patients and each room has en-suite facilities. The ward has two distinct areas, Maple and Laurel. Maple accommodates 10 people with a functional illness and Laurel accommodates 7 people with cognitive impairment. Our multi-disciplinary team comprises of Medical personnel, Qualified Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Health Care Support Workers, Activity Workers, Technical Instructor, Complementary Therapist and our dedicated hospitality staff. Along with our ward Management Team comprising of Manager and Three Charge Nurses we also have ward administrative staff and have access to a Patient Welfare Officer. We encourage regular visits from West Suffolk Hospital's Chaplaincy Service or external clergy. Visits from other professions are always welcome Northgate Northgate at Wedgwood House provides care for adults who are experiencing acute mental health problems. The purpose of admission is for assessment, treatment and therapy and support in helping adults return to well-being and independence. We have strong links with Southgate (also adult acute) and Abbeygate (older people s - organic and functional), that are both located within Wedgwood House.

3 Morning meetings occur each week day at 09:00hrs with the multi disciplinary team to discuss each patients care. reviews occur Tuesdays Fridays (10:00hrs 12:30hrs) where the patient and the team involved in their care can discuss progress, management plan and anything related to the patient s pathway. There is a full Therapeutic Activity Programme managed by our Occupational Therapy team that spans the working week and activities managed by our activity workers that spans evenings and weekends. Physical Health and Wellbeing is promoted by the morning walks and gym sessions facilitated by our technical instructors. Complimentary Therapists provide massage and reflexology to assist with the patient s recovery. Staff structure The staff team on Northgate ward comprises of a number of professionals from many disciplines that work closely together to focus on patients achieving their recovery goals. We also have a discharge co-ordinator who may become involved for those patients requiring support with accommodation requirements. A consultant, a senior registrar, a junior doctor, some qualified nurses and health care support workers work on each team. One qualified nurse will be identified as named nurse for a set number of patients, and all nurses on the team will help share in the patients care. Other members of the ward team include a mental health administrator, ward clerks, patient welfare officer, housekeepers and kitchen staff.

4 Applicant Requirements Applicants will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, proven ability to be self-motivated, able to work within a team as well as on their own initiative and committed to developing high quality standards of work. The ability to perform physical skills e.g. manual handling or PMA will be essential. We will provide a full induction on recruitment.
