5 Central Missouri Pound# 77 At our January Growl we barked out thanks to our Kulinary K-nines for their fantastic job on breakfast for the Department Quarterly Staff Meeting in December; your dedication and efforts are evidence as to why you were asked to join the MODD. Keep up the great work! Also, in December, the Pound Christmas Party was a lot of fun with a few changes from previous celebrations. A number of fun sleigh dog games were added to the event, one of which led to Senior Vice Pound Keeper Jorgenson and Pound Keeper Sanning each receiving the gift of a whipped cream pie delivered to the muzzle which resulted in 101 big bones donated for children s charities. Nice job Dogs! Sarah Jorgenson and Pup Reuter compete to see who can finish their Red Solo Christmas Tree first! We had a report on the Pound s Winner s Choice Pistol Raffle, with BIG BARKS going out to all the Dogs involved in making it a success with 997 tickets sold. Carey Bogg, owner of House of Bargains, also helped make our raffle a success, selling tickets in his firearms department and handling our FFL transactions at no charge; over the years, he has been a supporter of the Pound, Detachment, and the veteran community at large in many other ways. Sadly, we learned that Carey passed away on January 15. We also observed a moment of silence for PDD Ron Wainright s sister Reba Jean Durant, who passed away November 20, and for Past Chief Devil Dog George Barrows, who passed on January 13. Cards of sympathy have been sent to the families; please keep them in your prayers. Also in need of prayers are Pup John Losito s wife Rosie, who recently underwent surgery, and Pound member DD Bill Promberger, who is still in good spirits in Texas as he continues to receive chemo and radiation for a brain tumor. With the Supreme Growl so close to home in Overland Park, Ks., this year, we have at least four DDs Amick, Baskette, Livingston and Diemler considering the trip to try for PDD and their gold collars. Go for it, Dogs! DD Williams proudly showing off his White Cat gift as others look on in oh, what is the adjective here? amazement, horror, shock, so many fit this particular gift. With it so close, this is a great opportunity for any of our DDs who want to give it a shot. If you think there is a chance you will go then bark with Dog Robber PDD Mayhew and get your paperwork done so it can beat the 1 July deadline to Kennel. Better to have your paperwork in and not go than to miss the chance. February 10th Texas Hold Em Poker Tournament: This will be the Pound s third tournament, and you are all encouraged to come out and try your hand. DD Frank Livingston is our point Dog on this event; if you d like to help out, let him know. We only need four Dogs to work, but it would be nice to have a few extra Dogs on deck to learn the ropes for future tournaments. Every Dog can make a valuable contribution to this event by sharing flyers and info with your family, friends, and co-workers as we have plenty of seats to fill. See additional info in the Activities section of this newsletter and if you have questions or would like to volunteer to help, please contact DD Livingston at topliv2@ embarqmail.com or or the Pound Keeper at sfgactivities@gmail.com or call February 25th Pound Growl: Break your leash and come join us for the February Growl in the Bunker. Breakfast will be served at 0830 with the Growl at Your valuable input is needed in our deliberation of weighty and not so heavy issues, so come on out and bark with us. See you there! 5
6 the cry went up, "Remember the Maine!", and by late April the U.S. and Spain were at war. Marine Corps History: Selected February Dates of Marine Corps Historical Significance 1 February 1967: Operation Prairie II was begun in Quang Tri province by elements of the 3d Marine Division. During the 46-day search-and-destroy operation which terminated 18 March, 93 Marines and 693 of the enemy were killed. 2 February 1944: The 4th Marine Division, as part of the first assault on islands controlled by the Japanese before the start of World War II, captured Namur and eight other islands in the Kwajalein Atoll. 6 February 1968: Two reduced Marine battalions, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines with two companies, and 2d Battalion, 5th Marines with three, recaptured Hue's hospital, jail, and provincial headquarters. It would take three more weeks of intense house to house fighting, and nearly a thousand Marines killed and wounded, before the imperial city was secured. 11 February 1922: BGen John H. Russell was appointed U.S. High Commissioner and personal representative of the President to the government of Haiti. This nine-year assignment placed this future Commandant in supreme command of both the occupying American force and the Haitian Gendarmerie. 15 February 1998: One hundred years ago this date, 28 Marines and 232 seamen lost their lives when the battleship Maine was mysteriously sunk by an explosion in the harbor of Havana, Cuba. Though no definitive evidence linked the Spanish with the sinking, 17 February 1967: The first full day of Operation DECKHOUSE VI, which lasted until 3 March, was conducted near Quang Ngai city. The Special Landing Force (BLT 1/4 and HMM-363) accounted for 280 enemy killed. 23 February 1945: Four days after the initial landings on Iwo Jima, 1stLt Harold G. Schrier led 40 men from Company E, 2d Battalion, 28th Marines, up Mt. Suribachi to secure the crest and raise the small American flag that battalion commander LtCol Chandler Johnson had given Schrier. Within an hour, the patrol reached the rim of the crater. After a short firefight with Japanese defenders emerging from several caves, the small American flag was attached to an iron pipe and raised over the island. 24 February 1991: The I Marine Expeditionary Force and coalition forces began a ground assault on Iraqi defenses in the final chapter of Operation Desert Storm. The 1st and 2d Marine Divisions stormed into the teeth of Iraqi defenses while heavily armored allied forces attacked the Iraqi defenses in Iraq from behind. In 100 hours, U.S. and allied forces defeated the Iraqi Army. 28 February 1991: Operation Desert Storm ended when the cease- fire declared by President George Bush went into effect. I Marine Expeditionary Force has a strength of more than 92,000 making Operation Desert Storm the largest Marine Corps operation in history. A total of 24 Marines were killed in action during the Gulf War. Information from Marine Corps University: 6
