Box 83, Swansboro, NC A Publication of the Marine Corps League Swansboro Detachment #1407 Commandant s Corner It had been a hot summer on the coast of North Carolina. Many of our members took to the beautiful beaches here on the crystal coast to cool off. Others packed their campers and headed to the mountains. We had members travel to all parts of the country to visit relatives and attend class reunions. Summer had been a time of rest and relaxation before we started a very busy Fall Quarter. On October 22, we held our annual Fall Pancake Breakfast which always had a great turn out. We participated in the Belk Charity Day Sale in Morehead City, NC. This was one of our best Belk Charity Day Sale fund raisers to date. On September 24 th, we had members participating in events on both sides of the state. Some members attended the Department of North Carolina Marine Corps League ly Meeting, hosted by the Table Rock Detachment #1197, in Boone, NC. Other members worked the display table at the Annual Retiree Appreciation Day, Marston Pavilion, Camp Lejeune, NC. On September 11 th, we paid our respects to those who lost their lives at the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon, and the United Airlines Flight 93, that crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Each year, the Patriot Day Observance takes place at the 9/11 Memorial Beam at Lejeune Memorial Gardens at 8:15 a.m. to mark the time the Twin Towers were hit. On October 23 rd, we paid a solemn tribute to 273 Marines who gave their lives in Lebanon and Grenada on October 23, The ceremony takes place at the Beirut Wall located in the Lejeune Memorial Gardens, Jacksonville, NC. The names of each man are engraved in granite along with the words They Came In Peace. On November 5 th, we participated in the annual Jacksonville Veterans Day Parade. Our Past Commandant and current Paymaster Alexander Gunner Nevgloski Sr. was the Grand Marshal. On November 10 th we celebrated our 241 st Birthday of the Corps with a Birthday Ceremony attended by many members and guests. The upcoming Winter Quarter looks to be just as busy as we prepare for the Holiday season and a New Year. There are more events planned, so please visit our website at: You can also visit our Facebook page, or us at: mclswansboro1407@hotmail.com for more details. Semper Fidelis Commandant Tim Manchester
2 Page 2 Senior Vice Luis J. Alers A new study has found a close relationship between Agent Orange exposure during the Vietnam War and high blood pressure, a conclusion that could lead the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to dramatically expand the number of veterans eligible for compensation. The study, published by VA researchers in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, found a higher rate of hypertension among members of the Army Chemical Corps who handled Agent Orange during the war compared to those who didn't. Corps members who served in Vietnam but did not spray the chemicals also had a higher rate of hypertension than their peers who served outside Vietnam. Both results were statistically significant and add to a body of evidence linking Agent Orange exposure and hypertension. The findings come 41 years after the close of the Vietnam War and decades since the last supplies of Agent Orange were incinerated. Since then, veterans have become increasingly distrustful of the VA. They maintain that their exposure to Agent Orange, which contained the toxic chemical dioxin, has harmed their own health and has been passed on to their children. A VA working group has been studying the latest scientific literature since March to determine if any illnesses should be added to the agency's list of diseases for which vets are automatically entitled to compensation if they served in Vietnam. Specifically, the group has been looking at new evidence linking bladder cancer, under-active thyroid, Parkinson's-like symptoms and hypertension to Agent Orange exposure. ProPublica and The Virginian-Pilot are interested in hearing from veterans and family members for our ongoing investigation into the effects of Agent Orange on veterans and their children. 14 HISTORY & TRADITIONS Page 14 7 December 1941: Just before 8 a.m. on December 7, 1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. The barrage lasted just two hours, but it was devastating: The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded. 16 January 1991: Operation Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm as forces of the allied coalition launched an all-out air campaign against targets in Iraq and occupied Kuwait in an effort to liberate Kuwait and enforce the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. Overall, in the theater of operations, the coalition forces included more than 415,000 U.S. troops. 15 February 1898: On this date, 28 Marines and 232 seamen lost their lives when the battleship MAINE was mysteriously sunk by an explosion in the harbor of Havana, Cuba. Though no definitive evidence linked the Spanish with the sinking, the cry went up, "Remember the Maine!", and by late April the U.S. and Spain were at war.
15 Page 15 Gunny Claus (Steve Tracy) The first sighting of Gunny Claus was Christmas in Marine encampments throughout the Forests of Argonne France during WWI. He continues to return through every generation of the Marine Corps with one special mission, "No Kid Left Behind" #gunnyclaus. Gunny Claus is a Christmas-time Marine who's special duties take him to many places and always to search for kids who need him. He's known to work with veterans throughout the year, some of whom are homeless and families of veterans. To schedule Gunny Claus you must be an MCCS Area Coordinator, Family Readiness Officer or Commanding Officer of an active Marine Unit. Gunny Claus only makes appearances on Marine Bases, USO and Veteran Hospitals. Other military installations are also considered. All other requests are considered however must be appropriately approved and in the best interest of Kids. Gunny Claus is approved to visit Veterans Hospitals and the USO. There are many Gunny Claus's in the Marine Corps! There are sightings each year on the West Coast, the East Coast and in foreign Countries. You really just never know where he will show up!
