OFFICE OF THE BISHOP M EMO TO: Pastors FROM: Bishop Nickless DATE: January 23, 2019 RE: Briar Cliff Sunday Special Collection As in past years, the last weekend in January is reserved for a special diocesan collection to benefit Briar Cliff University known as Briar Cliff Sunday. That weekend is now upon us with the collection scheduled to be taken up at Masses on January 26 th and 27 th. For many reasons, my thoughts lately have turned to the young people of our diocese. A few weeks ago, a contingent of our Catholic youth attended a tremendously successful Seek Conference in Indianapolis. Last weekend, I watched television coverage of The March for Life in Washington, D.C., an event which draws thousands of youth from around the nation, including our own diocese. This weekend marks the beginning of our annual observation of Catholic education or Catholic Schools Week. Young Catholics need more of our attention, assistance and support as they make their way through the challenging high school and college years to emerge successful, not only academically, but also strong in their Catholic faith. It is fitting, then, that we come together as a Catholic community this weekend to show financial support for our diocese s only institution for Catholic secondary education, Briar Cliff University. I ask you to take up this collection and help Briar Cliff to strengthen the faith that began in so many Catholic families and was nourished by our parishes, religious education programs and Catholic elementary and high schools. Attached is a joint letter from me and President Rachelle Karstens, encouraging support of this weekend s special collection. My thanks to you and your parishioners for your generous support of Briar Cliff University! DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA (712) FAX: (712)
January 23, 2019 OFFICE OF THE BISHOP On behalf of the Diocese of Sioux City and Briar Cliff University, thank you for your participation in the special Briar Cliff Sunday diocesan appeal last January. Briar Cliff Sunday gives our parishes an opportunity to partner with Briar Cliff University to play a key role in guiding our youth both academically and spiritually. As the only Catholic university in the Diocese of Sioux City, Briar Cliff helps our high school graduates continue to grow in their relationships with God from the seeds of faith originally planted in them by their parishes, schools and families. Your parishioners who attend Briar Cliff have an opportunity to benefit from scholarship support in the following ways: 1. Bishop s Scholarship a four-year award for a high school graduate from the Diocese of Sioux City who exemplifies initiative, leadership in their home parish, an active faith life and strong academic performance. A pastor s recommendation is required for consideration by the committee. 2. Presidential Scholarship a full tuition scholarship renewable for up to four years. This competitive scholarship is based on a student s leadership role in their school, church and/or community. Students must have a 3.75 cumulative GPA and a 26 composite ACT score to apply. Personal interviews with select Briar Cliff administrators are required to receive this award. Each year three to five recipients are selected for this prestigious scholarship. 3. Connections Scholarships - benefit students who attend one of our diocesan high schools and/or have a parent or sibling who is an alumnus. 4. Additional general scholarships - additional scholarships are available based on a wide range of criteria from academics to athletics. The special collection for Briar Cliff Sunday on January 26 th and 27 th is critical to continue to make our private Catholic college education attainable and affordable. Please help tell the story of the Briar Cliff Scholarship Fund with the included information from Amy Derby, Director of Donor Relations. Thank you, in advance, for honoring the tradition of motivating your parishioners in supporting Briar Cliff Sunday. Respectfully, Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless Bishop of Sioux City Rachelle L. Karstens, JD President of Briar Cliff University DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA (712) FAX: (712)
TO: PASTORS FROM: AMY DERBY, DIRECTOR OF DONOR RELATIONS, BRIAR CLIFF UNIVERSITY Currently, 97% of Briar Cliff students depend on scholarship aid to make it possible for them to attend the only Catholic University in the Sioux City Diocese. Once a year, the parishes of the Sioux City diocese are asked to help provide scholarship funds for local students to attend Briar Cliff. The participation of your parish in the Briar Cliff Sunday Collection also gives witness to the unity of Catholic Education in the Diocese. Your promotion of Briar Cliff Sunday is critical. The BCU college experience includes all of the right components for a well-rounded Catholic higher education, including student participation in daily liturgies, dialogues on theology and Franciscan values, Confirmation retreats for Diocesan teens, RCIA sponsorships, weekly Bible studies, service-learning tours in the U.S. and abroad, Antioch retreat, community outreach, Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters. To assist you in sharing the Briar Cliff story, here are some sample statements that demonstrate how Briar Cliff gives back to your parish and your community. PULPIT ANNOUNCEMENT: On Briar Cliff Sunday, Jan. 26 and Jan. 27, there will be a special collection which is used exclusively to fund scholarships for Briar Cliff students. Briar Cliff s goal is to graduate men and women who demonstrate a lifetime commitment to serving the community and effecting change through value-based leadership. The impact of a Briar Cliff education gives back to our parishes and communities as Briar Cliff social work majors serve our local agencies. Briar Cliff nursing and health sciences graduates help us heal in clinics and hospitals Briar Cliff education majors teach our elementary and secondary Catholic school students. Briar Cliff graduates are lectors, Eucharistic ministers, religious educators, parish council members and choir directors. Briar Cliff alumni do pastoral work in our parishes as sisters, priests and deacons. Please consider including a donation to Briar Cliff s Scholarship Fund in the offering. You will see the results of a Briar Cliff experience in our community for years to come. Please help these young members of our parishes by contributing to the Briar Cliff Sunday offering! Facebook: Briar Cliff University has created a Briar Cliff Sunday event. If your parish has Facebook, we would ask that you share that event by following this link:

DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Office of Evangelization, Discipleship, and Family Life To: Priests of the Diocese of Sioux City From: Fred Shellabarger, Director of Evangelization & Discipleship RE: Confessions at the Diocesan Men s Conference Date: 1/23/19 Dear Fathers, Greetings in Christ, As we move closer to our 6 th Men s Conference, we are once again in need of priests who may be available to hear Confessions during the Conference. This year s conference will be held Saturday, April 6, 2019, at All Saints Parish St. Joseph Church, in Le Mars. First, thank you to all of you who have so generously given of your time in the past! Secondly, this year Confessions will be held in shifts throughout the day. We have been able to provide a much better Conference experience this way by better meeting the needs of Conference participants. This has also allowed us to be more accommodating to clergy schedules (and avoid the very long lines that had complicated the lunch hour in previous years). Ideally, we would have more than one priest available for each of the following time slots, on April 6, 2019: 9:00 AM 10:00 AM 10:00 AM 11:00 AM 11:00 AM 12:00 PM 12:00 PM 1:00 PM 1:00 PM 2:00 PM You are welcome to have lunch before or after, whichever you prefer. The Plymouth County Pork Producers will be providing their famous Plymouth County Fair Chops once again! We will also pay the usual stipend and mileage reimbursement. As always, you are welcome to attend all or part of the Conference as you are able. We would love to see you there! Please let me know at your convenience what shift(s) you may like to sign up for. My contact information is below. We are anticipating our largest Men s Conference yet! Thank you for your tremendous ministry, leadership and example! Peace be with you, Fred Shellabarger Director of Evangelization & Discipleship Diocese of Sioux City 1821 Jackson St., Sioux City, IA Office: Cell: freds@scdiocese.org

DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Office of Worship MEMO To: All Priests; All Parishes; All Schools & Other Institutions where Mass is Celebrated From: Fr. Lingle Date: 1/22/2019 Re: Flu & Influenza Related Illnesses As we enter the time of year when the flu, cold and other viruses begin to spread, the office begins to receive calls and messages asking us to enact measures to prevent the spread of such illnesses. At this time, we do not feel that it is necessary to impose a diocesan wide restriction on the Sign of Peace, Holy Communion under the form of the Precious Blood and other such gestures. At this time, we would ask the pastors and various chaplains to use their own judgment and prudence in making the decision to not exchange the Sign of Peace or offer Holy Communion under both forms. Many of you already take the steps to ensure that the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion wash their hands and use hand sanitizer. If there were to be a more widespread outbreak of the flu, and health officials advise, we would at that time consider a diocesan wide set of restrictions and precautions. At this time, we leave it up to you at the local level to make these judgments as it pertains to your community. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me in the Office of Worship or by , brentl@scdiocese.org Jackson Street P. O. Box 3379 Sioux City, Iowa Phone: Fax:
