2 Dear Parishioners, I came across this article about marriage. I share it with you for your reflection. Jesus teaches that Christian marriage is meant to be a covenant. Each partner freely makes a binding commitment to love and honor the other. Such things as treating one another with respect, expressing affection, encouraging honest communication, having a willingness to compromise, and spending quality time together, are essential for any successful marriage. A marriage in which husband and wife are truly committed to the covenant they make, by definition, is a success. Jesus spells out clearly that man and woman become one flesh; He tells us what God has joined together, humankind must not separate. This understanding of marriage as covenant is a beautiful one. It reminds husband and wife to live in a oneness of love, and to see that God is meant to be part of their marital relationship. It is God who has brought them together, and it is God who will give them the strength and guidance to stay together. In the Gospel, Jesus helps us to see that we must choose our commitments wisely, and then honor them. Let us pray today for all married couples in our parish and around the world, that they may honor their commitments to each other, and be signs of His love to the world. For those who may be interested, Franklin Graham, son of Rev. Billy Graham, is holding a prayer rally on Tuesday, August 30, at 12 p.m. on the Boston Common. He is traveling to all 50 states to challenge believers to take a stand and take action. He ll be urging Christians to vote, to live out their faith in every part of their lives and to pray for our nation just as Nehemiah cried out to God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and restore hope to His people. I will be available for confessions this week on Wednesday, August 24, from 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs. God love you, 2
3 Reflection of the Week Don t worry so much about what is going on around you and start paying attention to what is going on within you. HOLY HOUR A time of quiet music & reflection Sunday 7:00-8:00 p.m. PRAYER GROUP Hour of praise and charismatic prayer Monday 7:30-8:30 p.m. BIBLE STUDY Follow Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. HEALING SOAKING PRAYER Come meet us to pray for healing Wednesday 6:30 p.m. Thursday 2:00 p.m. Scriptural Teaching Holy Year of Mercy December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016 Immaculate Conception to Christ the King Please place this page on your refrigerator for this week s reflection: (Continuation from last week) Magnificat Magazine s Year of Mercy Companion edition (pages ) provides an understanding of indulgences for this Holy Year based on guidelines published by the Vatican on its website. 6. For the sake of those legitimately impeded, confessors can commute both the work prescribed and the conditions required (except, obviously, detachment from even venial sin). 7. Indulgence can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth. Specific Aspects of the Jubilee Year Having fulfilled the necessary conditions in numbers 3 and 4 (noted in previous weeks bulletins), the faithful may gain the Jubilee indulgence by performing one of the following works, listed here below in three categories: 8. Works of piety or religion Either make a pious pilgrimage to a Jubilee shrine or place and participate there in Holy Mass or another liturgical celebration (Lauds or Vespers) or some pious exercise (the stations of the cross, the rosary, etc.); Or make a pious visit, as a group or individually, to one of the Jubilee places, and there spend some time in Eucharistic adoration and pious meditations, ending with the Our Father, the profession of faith in any approved form, and prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary. 3
