2 MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR Happy New Year, everybody! Now that a new year has come, it is natural for each and every one of us to desire change in most aspects of our lives. Change, whether imminent, reversible or inevitable, brings new things that could transform our perspectives, directions, or even momentum. As for me, I am so excited to see the changes that will come as our year unfolds in PSME. Now that the BestGear 2.0 theme is placed for continuity, I am so sure of the positive changes that this will bring to our organization, and of course, the general membership, as proven by the leadership that is now running for its second year. The first time I stepped into PSME last August 2016, I was welcomed with open arms as the youngest one there was in my chapter. I was surprised to be the only woman, let alone, the youngest director in the chapter history. As I tread deeper into the realm that is PSME, I have observed a profound absence of young professionals in this organization, from chapter level to the national. I meant not to discredit the older generation that has tirelessly served PSME, but to slightly include this particular pressing issue in our focus. This is for the purpose of preparing our organization and leaders for the future. That when the time comes that this present generation governing our organization will finally pass on the torch of responsibilities, they will not be disappointed, for they will find the next generation queuing up and ready to serve. According to Statistics, 92% of our general membership consists of mechanical engineers who are 35 years old and under. Therefore, it is a real good fact that millenials overpower older generations in our organization by a massive number. But traveling nationwide to see the level of participation from regions other than NCR, tells me otherwise. I began to lose hope until towards the last half of the year, when new chapters were being chartered every now and then. I thought only the Wesmin Chapter had young blood working, but the Parañaque, Taguig, QC United and Taganito Claver Chapters proved me wrong. Young ones are starting to serve everywhere! I could not be more proud of my generation for standing up and obtaining that passion to serve our beloved organization. This might be the absolute indication that the future would not seem to be so bleak anymore. I do hope that this level of participation and involvement would continue to accelerate as this year progresses. But to all who have already started, I commend you, and most of all, we welcome you all and we are looking forward to see you serving and giving more life to PSME. Werpa! Stronger Chapters, Closer to Members. Before we focus on what lies ahead in 2018, let me say a few words on the last year, I would like to thank once again the 2017 National Board, all appointed of icers, all the Chapter Presidents and Of icers and the BME for our accomplishments both in the National Level and in Regional and Chapter Level. Many of these accomplishments will bring long-term bene its to our Society. Our deep appreciation also to the PSME Members for the love, respect and encouragement you have made all of us feel. You keep us motivated. And, thank you for letting us know that we are in the right direction during numerous small talks we have with you. Just by being there is enough for us, but you made sure that we are successful in all our activities as you enthusiastically participated in all the Society s activities and events. For 2018, we would like it to be known as The Year of the Chapters.. Strong Chapters make PSME Strong. We want the Chapters to be strong. We want not just one or few Chapters, we want ALL Chapters to be strong. We will introduce policy changes and projects with the intent of deliberately making the Chapters strong both inancially and in size. Our Society s laws, rules PRESIDENT S CORNER and policies are made for our Society to grow and not made for the bene it of a few for so long, to the detriment of our Society. We will bring our Society closer to our members. We will continue to multiply the number of courses offered by our Advance Training Centers. We will continue to ind ways to lower the cost of earning CPD points. We will continue to offer opportunities for our members to earn more, to upgrade their licenses, to ind employment, to learn new skills to give them advantages in their career. We will invest in new training centers all over the Country. We will organize more conferences and forum. Together, we will entice all Mechanical Engineers to be active in PSME. We will ind all of them and we will make them proud of our profession. The more services we offer to our members, the stronger PSME becomes. A strong, in luential and powerful PSME is good for our profession and good for all of us. Let s all work together as a team. Engr. Rogelio G. Reyes PSME National President Engr. Eunice Chelzea C. Gallardo Editor-in-chief A GLIMPSE OF THE PAST 1952 The Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) was founded with the objective of uniting and enjoining mechanical engineers in the pursuit of further professional growth and in uplifting of the profession, in general PSME was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stack, non-profit organization with Engr.
