2 Happy Holidays everyone! By now most of you have your boats winterized and tucked away for the winter. This is a great time to reflect over the past boating season and to be thankful for living so close to the Chesapeake Bay. We can also be thankful for being part of such a great organization as ASPS. As members of ASPS, we are so very lucky to be able to take wonderful classes from our Education Officers, Mike Maszczenski, Tony Martin and their team of outstanding instructors. I feel blessed to have Gary Antonides, Noni Rondeau and Lee Myers who work so hard to provide such excellent social events: the wonderful dinners, raft ups and cruises. And I feel fortunate for all the members who have contributed to the safe boating of the community through their volunteer time and donations. I thank Homer Sandridge and his team of vessel safety examiners who completed 160 VSCs this past year! Thank you to our Safety Officer, Ron Ricketts, for his fabulous monthly safety articles in the Anchor Watch. Thank you to the editors, Georgianna Maszczenski, Carol Rechner, and Linda Sweeting for another year of outstanding issues of the. Thank you to the new ASPS Communications team, Linda Sweeting, Kathy Nash and Tony Martin, for keeping the community informed on the fantastic offerings of ASPS. Thanks to Webmaster John Wesley Nash for constantly updating and improving the ASPS website (aspsmd.org) and for Kathy Nash for keeping the ASPS Facebook page active and vibrant ( Thanks to Tony Martin for starting the ASPS Meetup page ( that now has 130 members and for beginning a partnership with the Navy League Cadets of Annapolis ( I think back over the past year and feel so fortunate to have ASPS members Denise and Lars Lindenhall as friends. They put their hearts and souls into all they do for us. The ASPS hospitality suite and the fall boat show booths were outstanding successes due to their leadership and dedication to ASPS. Kathy Slattery deserves special recognition. She works exceedingly hard behind the scenes to bring in new members for ASPS as well as filling in frequently to keep the meeting minutes which are crucial to the effective running of our volunteer organization. Her hard work goes largely unnoticed by most of our membership. There are so many things for ASPS members to be thankful for. We are truly blessed to be able to contribute so much to the community. Our next opportunity to give back to the community is the Toys for Tots event held in conjunction with the ASPS holiday party. And coming in March we will have a food drive for the benefit of the Annapolis Food Bank. Don t let this be you! Executive Officer Lt/C Jeffrey Short, P I encourage those of you with boats to check on them frequently this winter whether they are on the hard or in the water. Check that the scuppers and drains are not clogged with leaves and debris. Clogged scuppers and drains are a common cause of damage from stored boats filling up with water from rain and melting snow and possibly sinking or falling off their stands. Thank you all for a wonderful boating season and for being members of ASPS. ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON 2
3 December Dinner Meeting/Holiday Party Our next dinner meeting is December 1st. This is also our Holiday Party. We ll be at the Elks Lodge in Edgewater, social hour will start at 6, dinner at 7, and then Santa will arrive. Please bring an unwrapped toy for a girl or boy for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program. We have invited the Marines to send someone to join us for dinner. Santa will preside over the gift exchange after dinner. If you plan to participate, please bring a wrapped gift costing less than $15. You will draw numbers, and be called in turn to select a gift from the gift table or from someone who has already gotten a gift, and who must then pick a different gift. There are two entrees to choose from as well as a vegetarian option. Be sure to include your choice in the comments section of the online form or in your message on the hotline. Grilled Filet Mignon Broiled Crab Cake Vegetarian Lasagna The cutoff time for RSVPs is 4:00 pm, November 29th (Tuesday). Please register through our website at or by calling ASPS Voic at , Option 4. Dinner Cost: $27/ per person, cash or check at the door. January Dinner Meeting Administrative Officer Lt/C Gary P. Antonides, AP For our January meeting, again at the Elk s Lodge, we have invited a speaker from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. With the newly elected administration taking over, there are real questions about their commitment to continue the Bay cleanup and minimize climate change. We don t know who will head the EPA yet, but we can guess where this is going. The three options on the menu will be: Fresh Fried Chicken Homemade Meatloaf Mushroom and Broccoli Quiche Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. --Mark Twain ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON 3

5 By Linda Sweeting, Communications Chair If you were unable to attend our November Annapolis Sail and Power Squadron dinner meeting you missed a beautiful walk down dream boat lane. The excellent dinner was followed by Donald Trumpy, grandson of the founder of Trumpy Yachts. He presented The History of John Trumpy and Sons, Inc. peppered with fascinating anecdotes about his grandfather and yachts. Boat building ran strong in the Trumpy family. Two generations of boat builders came before John Trumpy Sr., starting with Hans Trumpy in 1830 s Germany. John Sr. apprenticed at the age of 14 in Bergen Germany, and went on to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture. In 1909 he partnered with John Mathis and began building legendary yachts at Mathis Shipyard in Camden, New Jersey. His goal was to build boats that had all the comforts of home and a shallow draft to navigate rivers and lakes. In 1911 eleven motor yachts over 70 feet and two yachts over 90 feet were built. Initially the gasoline engines sat uncovered below decks, adjacent to crew sleeping areas and the galley. This evolved to a now traditional engine room. In 1927 the switch was made to diesel engines. John Sr. was meticulous; even fashioning brass hardware for his hand built yachts instead of using any readymade parts. American history is threaded throughout the Trumpy Yacht production schedule. During WWI, starting in 1917, Trumpy Yachts built one hundred seventy five sea plane hulls and wing supports plus two 110 sub casers. In 1924, for prohibition, Donald Trumpy twenty 75 Coast Guard patrol boats were built. The depression impacted luxury yacht building; in 1930 only eleven yachts were made. At the start of WWII Trumpy yachts supported the war effort by building twenty two 110 sub chasers, thirty 63 rescue boats, and four 110 tug boats. Perhaps the best known Trumpy yacht is the USS Sequoia. Built in 1925, she was first used by President Herbert Hoover and served as the presidential yacht until sold by President Carter as an austerity measure. The USS Sequoia can be chartered and currently docks at the Gangplank Marina, 6th Street & Maine Avenue S.W. Washington, D.C. The Sequoia Dinner Meeting, November 3, 2016 In 1947 Trumpy Yachts purchased the Annapolis Yacht Yard in East Port and changed the name to Trumpy Yacht Yard. John Sr. visited the yard every day, to watch work in progress, until his death in Traditionally the placement of the Trumpy bow scroll was the final finishing detail for all of the yachts. All of the Trumpy yachts were wooden except the 148 steel hull Alamo built in Trumpy Yachts halted production in 1972 due to an aging labor force, the lack of younger men interested in learning the trade, and competition from fiberglass boats like Hatteras Yachts. For more information see the Trumpy Yacht Association website: and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime website: In addition to delicious meals and enjoyable conversation, our meetings offer food for thought. If you know of a possible speaker or have something you would like to share please contact Gary Antonides. We hope to see you on December 1 is that jingle bells I hear? 6 This continues to be an exciting semester for the Education office. We just conducted an "On The Water Experience" for members of the Electronic Navigation Class and Seamanship. To make the material in the course more relevant, we spent 3 hours aboard LUX on Saturday, November 19. Participants had a chance to explore chart plotting with Raymarine, INavX on an ipad, and OpenCPN on a Windows 10 tablet and Android phone. We looked at using a simple GPS unit with paper charts. Students also watched radar and the area it displayed in real time. AIS information on several ships and smaller craft was of special interest as it was displayed on the electronic charts. Educational Officer Lt/C Michael Maszczenski, Jr., N Martin Lutsky, Carol Rechner, Elizabeth Szouos, Tony Martin, Edwin Sunderland, Michael Maszczenski, and Terry Slattery prepare to get underway for a morning of electronic navigation from Whitehall Cove to the Annapolis Anchorage. It is the season of holidays, family gatherings, and the start of winter weather. It is also the time I need you to make a commitment to sign up for a course or seminar. Please don't forget to do that so I can plan for materials. We have some good course and seminars lined up so please tell everyone you can, put up a poster, share our website, and make the classes full. Thank you for your support! 8 From Joel Hiden, Comander ASPS In Memorium It is my sad duty to inform you that our friend D/Lt/C Jim Redding passed away recently. Although a member of the Dundalk Sail and Power Squadron, Jim was an associate member of ASPS for many years, frequently attended our dinner meetings, and served as our District 5 liaison to the ASPS Executive Committee. He was the D5 Treasurer this year and also served in several positions at the Dundalk Squadron. I met Jim when both of us were newly elected squadron treasurers back in 2004, while we were attending the D5 Spring Conference in Ocean City. Jim always put service before self and could always be counted upon to help wherever there was a need. Those who attended the November ASPS membership meeting heard Jim announce his battle with cancer, and his pledge to continue serving as our D5 liaison as best he could. 10 December 2016 Members on the Move Downrigging Weekend By Georgiana Maszczenski, S The last weekend in October saw the crew of LUX headed off to Chestertown for the annual Sultana s Downrigging Weekend Tall Ship and Wooden Boat Festival. This event is one of the largest annual tall ship gatherings on the East Coast. This year, there were 7 tall ships including the Sultana and the Pride of Baltimore II. Peggy and Terry Slattery, Michael and Georgiana Maszczenski, and our friend Susan Gilbert sailed from Annapolis. Bob Gilbert joined us by car in Chestertown. Everyone enjoyed the waterfront packed with ships, schooners, and wooden boats. Musicians played everywhere, including one boat with a calliope that wandered around the anchorage. We enjoyed good food and great company. The Sultana Education Foundation is already planning the Downrigging Weekend for ASAP members should consider going it s a great time. Downrigging Weekend. 12 December 2016 Safety Officer Ron Ricketts USPS Safety : Digital Innovation In an earlier newsletter this year, I highlighted some of the great applications that are now available on our smart phones It s hard to believe this is only the 9th anniversary of our ubiquitous smart phones! How they have changed our lives. I know have become so dependent on mine that I group all my boating Apps together on my both my iphone and ipad. Well, the United States Power Squadron has gone digital in a big way with the October launch of the Digital Media Library (DML) Video Series. You may have seen this as they have sent notices out via but given how we all get so much of that I felt it was worthwhile highlighting it this month. Currently available on both a browser version and Android app, the DML is the window into a wealth of USPS resources. The link to the web site is and is also on Facebook at as well as other social media sites such as Instagram, Pintrest. There is also a private LinkedIn Group, which you can ask to join. Very important note: You can SUBSCRIBE to the DML so that you will be updated via as content changes. If you have not had a chance to visit this site yet, I highly recommend that you do. For those that have been around many years you will find many of the safety and training materials that were available hardcopy are all now digitized and can be downloaded and distributed from this application. This is work in progress, but you can see below this includes a variety of mediums that in the past were only available hardcopy. ANNAPOLIS SAIL AND POWER SQUADRON 12
